One Piece Episode 359 UNCUT REACTION!

Comments

Please react to one piece MONSTER made by netflix after ep 362

INSATIABLE

@Adam Vialpando I completely disagree with you on that. If anything, Oda is a "victim" of that culture, not a counter force – and for sure never will be one because of Absalom lmao @Artemis "Which is why they do not adopt censorship policies, especially related to adolescent sexuality, marriage, and even spirtuality" you are saying this about the country that has mastered the art of pixelation, while still producing some of the most bizarre & extreme adult content in the entire world lol My 2 cents on that whole topic are that it is simply the difference between a guilt-based & shame-based culture In Western, individual-focused societies, moral guidance is internal, with individuals acting as their own moral judge. Even private acts like consuming extreme or taboo pornography can feel wrong, as they violate personal moral codes. However, pornography often dabbles in what edges these boundaries – such as f.e. incest-themed content, that is such a popular category in the West, but almost always framed as 'step-sibling' to avoid crossing the full moral threshold. This allows for the thrill of guilt without completely breaching personal moral limits. In contrast, Japanese society, which is centered on external shame and social harmony, focuses more on public perception than internal guilt – or rather external shame becomes the internal guilt. As long as private fantasies don't disrupt social order or cause public dishonor, taboos in pornography are more tolerated. This creates a space where anything that would normally provoke societal shame can be explored privately without consequence, since shame only applies when actions are exposed publicly. Because of this, there’s effectively no limit to how extreme content can get in private media, allowing for much more boundary-pushing depictions in Japanese adult videos or anime. And obviously the difference in gender dynamics plays a huge role as well (though I wouldn't describe them as being as different as some make them out to be)

Yeah, that's a great outlook. Knowing more about a writer will always give you a better understanding and or appreciation for their work. I personally think Oda was cooking with arsenic on this one both in terms of Absalom as a character and Sanji's reaction to him but its easy enough to just pretend it happened differently or just didn't happen at all so its not a huge deal.

ChocoBoshi

True. Oda can definitely take it too far sometimes. Like I said, it's an extreme reaction and it doesn't always work. I don't always necessarily agree with every one of these jokes. But knowing more of the context behind why mangaka like Oda might choose to tell them makes me more willing to understand it even if I don't condone it.

Adam Vialpando

@Adam Vialpando, I never really thought of it as a sort of anti cultural thing, that's an interesting perspective. As interesting as it is however, even if the goal is to make more people feel comfortable being themselves, doing that by depicting a sexual assault as something to laugh about just isn't a good way of achieving that end, especially if impressionable children are the audience you're trying to impress this message upon. I think One Piece does a great job of portraying the message that its ok to confidently be yourself without portraying these depraved acts and playing them for laughs. I mean, Luffy's whole goal is a counter cultural movement aimed at the world government in this world. I don't think Oda needs to stoop to the level of a character like Absalom to portray those themes in a way that younger audiences will find interesting. Yes its ok to feel sexual attraction and its ok to express that, it is not ok however to do anything like what is shown in this arc. If Absalom was confronted by Nami or basically anyone that didn't have Sanji's exact reaction here, maaaaybe I could see it playing well, but the end of the joke is basically just that Sanji is upset that its someone else perpetrating these acts not the fact that they were done to begin with.

I mean, I wouldn't go as far as day Japan's culture is better or healthier than others. As I commented, Oda and many others write their manga often in direct conflict with what they view as oppressive cultural standards that hold many people back. Anime is less about Japanese culture but rather Japanese counter-culture. Sex is one way they disagree with others but there are other ways they find to rebel. Like how do many anime characters have crazy hairstyles with completely unnatural colors and shades, even in anime that take place in schools. Considering how Japanese students can and have been bullied simply for having lighter or curly hair this is definitely one area of rebellion mangaka like Oda choose.

Adam Vialpando

well said, it goes back to their history of the war, a very subjugated country that lost power in the world and leadership, their moral values. As a result, their collaborative involvement to love and honor and respect their own people and become united is very strong. Their deeper religions and of course their views on sex and traditions are a big part of their culture, as is most Asian countries. Which is why they do not adopt censorship policies, especially related to adolescent sexuality, marriage, and even spirtuality. It’s a very different set of rules that dictate their society and values compared to here where we have more of an emphasis on "power" and "strength" and control and or manipulation. Thats why often in japan you would never see someone disrespect and enter another persons personal space, but here its a everyday normal occurence. To be honest, Japan I think lives a healthier lifestyle and they tend to conform to the old customs that have been a part of many cultures for 100's of years. We are a country that feels compelled to change all of that into our own conceited view. I am sure others can go very deep into this kind of subject but I won’t touch on that rabbit hole here lol.

Artemis

The more I learn about Japanese culture the more I'm able to understand why Oda does some of this stuff and am less bothered by it. When it comes to matters of a sexual nature modern Japanese culture is heavily repressive. Nothing overt or lawful obviously but culturally there is just so much the average man and woman is taught to keep silent about. It's why in romance anime holding hands can be seen as a huge deal whereas to us westerners it comes off as a bit overblown. Same with Oda. He has gone on record saying that he puts in tons of fan service because he feels these types of feelings teens have shouldn't be seen as something to be ashamed of but rather as a part of themselves and their feelings. Is it extreme? Of course. But it's an extreme reaction to an opposite cultural extreme.

Adam Vialpando

The Japanese broadcast of this episode was censored because of the resemblance with the 2008 Akihabara massacre, in which a man stabbed 12+ people, which happened 2 weeks prior to this airing. – according to the OP Wiki

Right? The two zombies matching the energy of this stupid conversation was hilarious 🤣 And yeap definitely a range Sanji's character can step into without being that surprising

Sanji Joestar

Really enjoyed the reaction 😊

IBG_Music

Oh man, that Sanji tantrum was unexpected. Man's been down bad since childhood.

EOussama

I was fully expecting Carson and Lindsey to totally lose interest in the episode because of Sanji's dream 😂 good thing they found it funny at least lol...Oda does this stupid shit sometimes but thankfully its not that common, and this one is completely played for a joke (the heckler even breaking the fourth wall, the self awareness is funny)...it kinda fits Sanji too since he flips from cool to goofy but still sometimes I wish his perviness would be toned down but oh well, Japanese shonen mangakas and their humor

boredbeck

these episodes really make the anime pacing obvious bruh

Baronizer

I compared this section of the fight to the manga and there's like 2 censorships i noticed The blade Sanji was pierced with actually went through his chest and out on the other side The second is that when Sanji kicked Absalom into the wall, in the manga his body forms a cross, with his arms perpendicularly to his body, and his legs together instead of spread

Sanji Joestar

The infamous Brick BATTO

Whoopsie

Even tho ik Oda's humor sometimes crosses some boundaries, this is the moment when Sanji's character took a big nose dive for me. He had so many cool moments so far and the whole im chivalrous and not kicking women in Enies Lobby then u get this. smh

Black Snow

Carson did remember correctly We haven't seen another Kumacy-looking bear around Perona. Poor Kumacy💙

Sanji Joestar

I'm not gonna lie, i was apprehensive of your reception of this episode as it's very contentious when it comes to Sanji. Sometimes Oda's sense of humor feels like that of a kid. If he thinks something's funny, he'll add it. Fart Jokes and pervy ones etc. The bath scene in Alabasta with Cobra telling the boys where the girls are, or sometimes Sanji over obsession with women etc Even the SBS section often has questions about that kind of topic and he's the one choosing to answer them. I think with Absalom he made a character that, as a vilain, crossed the line between '' haha funny '' humor and actual creepiness. Literally physically aggressing them. With Sanji's personality it's easy to guess why he'd want that fruit having some weird fantasies about it. For some people it can feel conflicting or even contradicting with his chivalrous lovecook attitude towards ladies. I don't particularly enjoy pervy jokes, i just brush them off as a bad joke, disappointing, but still a joke, and joke aren't supposed to be taken seriously, and you guys seems to get that aspect watching this episode. Love the reactions and can't wait for more.

Sanji Joestar

You remember the lion with a human face we saw at the beginning of the arc when Nami looked outside the chariot carrying them? Well that's the lion for Absalom's face. When asked in an SBS, Oda confirmed it but said he won't talk about the human face on the lion in case some Absalom fans would be disappointed that was his previous face. It definitely is since Oda later drew the main group from Thriller Bark as kids. You guys should definitely need to check those Sbs answers about the kid versions of many characters we know someday. And i doubt Absalom has fans LMAO 🤣
