I realy like Moria, he makes one piece world bigger and better

Like or dislike him, Moria's character had better writing than Rob Lucci

Matthew Gilroy

I guess Moria is more like a main character who was destroyed by his own adventure instead of fulfilling it, to the end, he is consumed by his delusion and ultimately overdosed on his own power failing to prove his point just like he failed to deliver on his original venture. At the end, all he worked for was for nothing. All of those years just for nothing to happen. I really like how individuals' powers play into what they stand for, just like Luffy where rubber always bounces back, a Shadow will always stand behind and blend in into nothingness when light departs.

Moria is one of those guys where people think he's a bad villain because they personally didn't like him as much or he was underwhelming, but that isn't really the point is it? It is obvous oda downplayed him a bit to present a higher threat for the story. However, Moria is the result of trauma. He is a character that suffered great defeat in the NW, lost his entire crew, re-avulated his entire situation, retrieved to safer waters, and came up with an ambitious goal of reviving the dead to hopefully some day make his pirate king goal a reality. In short, you can say that his Journey to become Pirate king had a very abrupt tragic end and he is now living in his 2nd life. From the outset, It's hard to sympathize with someone like Moria because of his ugly exterior and no care for anything living, but you have to admit, the nuanced writing that isn't as in your face as one piece can sometimes be was very well done here, and I think Oda did a good job with providing more of a moral dynamic to his character this way. Sadly, this is not really appreciated by a lot of the fans, but this is where Oda is truly starting to evolve as a writer.

This and the previous episode is basically where Moria's character clicked for me. His motto shown in his introduction being relying on others and '' YOU do it! '' ''Make me the Pirate King'' show a complete give up on Moria's part about accomplishing his dreams and ambitions on his own. Oda mentioned in an SbS that in a world where Life and Death are secondary to the characters' core convictions and beliefs(Lola for example in this episode) losing your dream/ambition, failing in your conviction is a sentence worse than death. How the characters react to those losses is also important. And in Moria's case, he's the perfect embodiment of what i'd call a broken pirate. Just like Luffy, in the past he had a reliable crew and strength to boot. But it wasn't enough. And because of that, they died(just like Brook's). He experienced the loss of his comrades and to never go through such hell ever again he resorted to creating a crew of undeads instead. The fear of losing your crew mates as you face danger is part of the journey. But he couldn't handle it, so he became an empty shell devoid of personal ambition, a Shadow of his past self. Which is a sad conclusion for him as throughout the arcs you notice some similarities with Luffy, like when he heard that the crew found out the weakness of the Zombies he didn't see it as a problem and more as a challenge that makes the battle more interesting. In that same scene Perona says she'll handle it and Moria responded with disappointment because '' well this is no fun at all ''. And later he wanted to ''play'' with Oars, like he was wearing a Giant mech. Some behaviors I feel are very Luffy-Like. Even the fact he can take in a thousand shadows shows he had a strong sense of willpower like Luffy(even if he's the guy with the Shadow fruit). What i'm getting at is the similarities between the two of them. But Luffy sets the difference between that too. Because even if he's a nail that stands out he won't get crushed. Why? Because he's made of Rubber! He's so flexible that he becomes almost inflexible. Even if he has to overexerts himself combining two gears that have a huge toll on his body and the previous 100shadows he was absorbing, he won't stop fighting. And now that the Shadow master has been defeated, all that's left is the threat of the sunlight vaporizing them or the joy of feeling it once again, one or the other. For Brook atleast, seeing the sun after so long, the sign that he's now over the night of Thriller Bark.

Moria serves a near identical purpose for the New World that Don Krieg and Arlong served for the Grand Line. Moria is a fallen pirate, someone who was feared and respected until he stepped into an arena he wasn't ready for and promptly got his ass beat so bad he retreated to safer waters.

"I can't be crushed... because I'm rubber" and "Hey shadow! If you want to be king of the pirates, you'd better stick with me" are some of my favorite lines. I also love just how foreboding Moria's line "The real nightmare is in the new world" is. I remember, when I first watched this episode that gave me chills and I couldn't wait to see what was next. Its crazy to think that I was only like 100 episodes away from catching up when I first watched this.
