One Piece Episode 397 UNCUT REACTION!

Comments

Loved it already by this point, and the previous episode is still one of my favs, but actually you haven't even reached the part where I thought "Omg this story is waaaaay too good." Getting closer though (by all logic, unless you start watching the show backwards).

Jambron

I started One Piece in 2016 because I finally gave in and wanted to see what the hype was all about. I told myself that I'd just do it. I was pretty similar in that I was really enjoying specific moments but also had my reservations. Water 7 was my first "aha moment", when my investment skyrocketed. Everything felt so fresh and fun to watch; An experience that felt quite a bit different from the arcs prior, even though there were many before that I really enjoyed. The shift in tone during Sabaody really struck such a crazy chord somewhere in me and I couldn't stop watching. Fast forward 8 years and here I am, One Piece is my favorite series by far and I'm watching reactions to relive the experience. It's so crazy too, because I can't even pinpoint when it became my #1. Somewhere along the way, I realized that it was my favorite, and Sabaody was a huge contributing factor.

Kittyslayr

Before Rayleigh was introduced there was a SBS where someone asked who that guy in the flashback was,Oda said "The man who scolded the two boys was the first mate. I've had that set in stone since the very start, so I even made sure the anime staff knew that."

emilio corvalan

Such a good way to describe the "This is where One Piece gets good" phenomenon. In addition to people just having different tastes in media its absolutely a threshold thing. I think something that is also really great about One Piece is the ability to look back at previous arcs and enjoy them retrospectively. I can understand certain parts of the story not being as compelling for certain people on first watch but in a lot of those cases I think that the benefit of future knowledge really makes them even more enjoyable. An example could be the attention to detail of certain characters appearing really early on even if they aren't named, like Rayleigh being in Buggy's flashback.

ChocoBoshi

Very fun fact! In the episode of the Buggy flashback (all the way to the beginning of East Blue, when he mistakenly eats his devil fruit) there's a scene of Rayleigh smacking them both in the head. Same character design, just younger (manga panel: - no spoilers - https://i.imgur.com/JQMbLRK.png ) Not saying Oda had it thought out since then, just saying it takes a hell of a writer to go fetch a detail so far back in your story and use it to your advantage!

fccview

When I got to this arc the first time I binged in a day. The way they paced it is insane. Cliff hanger after cliff hanger and just non stop juicy stuff happening.

Whoopsie

About what you said in the end, I have to say what I like about One Piece (mostly the manga I'll be honest, anime has a lot of drawbacks for me), is that Oda does put these breather arcs in between. Less stakes, adventure, lore, worldbuilding, even cover stories. That not only helps make the One Piece world feel like a true, breathing, ever evolving world (for example right now we have the whole Ace side story that is completely unaffected by the main protagonist actions, how many stories do that so well?) but it also avoids a huge problem that exists in shonnen, which is that by trying to constantly one up the previous stakes, they feel completely detached from their origins. I'm thinking Naruto and Bleach in particular, which were the contemporary anime with One Piece, but I can say that for other anime older and newer as well. Is One Piece flawless? Definitely not, but I think the themes are consistent, the world building is spectacular and character growth and arcs feel earned.

BTImelesS

Aura piece is real lol. I think you are justified to have the standard you explained in the discussion, Carson, and I agree. I watched One Piece after Naruto, and while I thought it was good after Arlong Park, Drum Island, Alabasta, I got more into it while watching Water 7 and Sabaody. But it was this particular arc where I went from a casual watcher to theory hunting and form discussions. To this day, date I say, it's probably still my favorite arc, although it's very close between the top 5 arcs for me.

EOussama

You've been waiting for this haven't you? I know I have.

EOussama

I know I know, I'm only messing around. Being critical of a beloved show as a reactor is far from easy. You don't want to say too much in either direction. Mental gymnastics is almost a requirement lol, you guys are all good feeling however you feel 👍

SomeoneElse

I absolutely agree. Some fans fail to take into account that when we are watching One Piece together, we are essentially watching two different stories. At this point in the story Arlong Park is being totally transformed by the context of Hachi, Camie and the plight of the fishmen. Enies Lobby is being slowly changed by the uncovering of the governments corruption. When you say One Piece is getting better arc by arc, that also goes for the arcs that are already over.

SupRPositioN

it's the arc that if someone who's still not fully onboard yet, every OP fan bets this arc will surely get someone hooked into liking One Piece... for me, since I binged this in 2006 and Ennies Lobby was the current arc, it made me look down on Naruto, I can't even get myself to continue watching it even though Shippuden was just starting

josephocenada

It’s so true, one piece gets better as the characters and world builds. I loved it from the beginning but the investment sky rockets as you come to know and love the strawhats and the world around them xx

Super Novice

My biggest concession is the Ivachan&co issue (if you know, you know). It's just unbearable and I hope Oda doesn't add anything like that again

LRomero

For me personally I really became heavily invested at the end of thriller bark with zoro’s badass moment and this arc too

Jeremy

Not to hype things up and down, but doing so anyway, this arc is a community favorite for obvious reasons so you got yourselves some weeks of one peak, but I hope you still have fun with mid arcs like Thriller Bark cuz there aren't just top arcs in the show. Pretty sure we all know about the higher standards and I'm cool with that. We all have to make concessions for One Piece anyway

LRomero

Already can’t wait for the next drop 👌🏽

Jeremy

appreciate the initiative of starting the episode few seconds before the title so you guys have time to close your eyes... titles are really spoilery... was about to suggest that in previous episode 😅

josephocenada

When I was binging One Piece to catch up, up until this point, I honestly didn't feel much too different than y'all in terms of investment. What kept me going through the tedious parts was always that it was a fun show first (& the promises of all the wild stuff that supposedly lay ahead). Sure it was enjoyable, but it wasn't nearly hitting the level of "all-time great" yet for me, that so many ppl claimed it was. As a first-time watcher, you’re really just seeing each arc for what it is. Especially as reacters you are constantly told about seeds supposedly being planted, when you have yet to see any bear fruit (aside from now two recent ones in TB I guess). It’s like trying to convince someone who’s never seen flowers how beautiful a garden can be by showing them patches of tilled soil. And here’s the thing about One Piece: its strength doesn’t necessarily lie in blowing you away arc by arc. Especially when it leans so heavily on themes, which can feel quite a bit exaggerated or overly romanticized, which may not resonate with everyone. Particularly, if you're more accustomed to tighter, more self-contained storytelling – and I suspect, adaptation aside, also the reason why people said you guys wouldn't like this story, prior to the Live Action. The true magic of One Piece isn’t in the arcs themselves (though of course you get standouts like Sabaody) but in how all those separate threads gradually interconnect, creating a story that’s far greater than the sum of its parts. Though I’m sure you’ve heard that more than enough lol I’m really looking forward to the moment when you all start to see this for yourselves. So if it feels like you’re only now starting to feel really invested, that’s completely fine. One Piece is a slow burn, and the deeper you get, the more those seemingly separate stories start to connect in ways that truly hit. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 what makes it an all-timer for me.

klairvoyage

One Piece is that kind of story that I think can't happen again. I know it sounds crazy but it's like all conditions were met to reach this point throughout the years It's a story that keeps building on itself, its bases, its themes and emotions while simultaneously keeps expanding Oda nailed this craft and is fulfilling promesses and enjoyments in a way that even today, i just love the story more after new arcs. And this takes time and patience that I don't think many were confident enough to have back then. And now it's even worse Most manga nowadays get cancelled after less than 10 chapters if they don't catch on some hype train or audience. They can't even afford to feel slow. I think Jujutsu Kaisen is a good example of that, correct me if i'm wrong but the author had a short term plan for the manga to end quite early after a dozen chapters but as it became popular he was allowed to extend his story. In comparison, in One Piece we don't even reach the Grand Line until chapter 101. 100 chapters to get somewhere that's not even an actual place but an ensemble of settings that are yet to be reached. Almost 3 years of publication. That's absolutely insane And it's still going to this day. All that to say i'm jealous that you get to explore it with fresh eyes. Normally i'd say I wish i could forget everything and restart One Piece, but i'd rather live with all the impacts it had on me throughout the last 12years lol.

Sanji Joestar

Now they're trapped in the One piece train and will need to reach a 1000 episodes to prove you right or wrong 😈 All according to Keikaku

Sanji Joestar

Lesson Achieved: One Piece gets better and better the more you watch 😄 this saga is so mind blowing, I mean it. So glad you’re fully locked in, you’re in for a wild ride.

Iris

I totally understand what you're saying, this is around the same point in the story I was hooked as well 🎣 (even while enjoying everything before)

L.Joy

Since you brought this discussion up in your post reaction, I am also going to say that since this story started in 1997, the demographic and audience were clearly different in those days, and I think part of it could be that Oda's readers have grown up. They are not the same Japanese children that used to read your every-day weekly cartoon manga for kids anymore, so his fans/readers, aging to adults, have greater expectations for a story, which most definitely obligated Oda to think more ambitiously in terms of how he wanted to present his manga. Additionally, Oda was really young when he started this manga. I think with any author as they age, the story reflects some of their life experiences and the feedback recieved by their readers. That is also the same with authors like Kishimoto, who created a story that more heavily revolved around family and parental relationships because he himself became a father and got married with children.  But yeah, glad to have you onboard, and it's nice to get that sudden "realization" that something is finally clicking into place for you. If one piece remained as a linear and simplistic story, as it was in the early parts of the manga (east blue saga), it would not have become the sensational phenomenon that it is today.

Artemis

Seeing oda grow as an author and seeing his story growing with him too is so interesting

fia

Different people have different moments. For me, it was Water 7 (specifically luffy and usopp's argument in the merry) For me, it’s not that one piece gets good after x amount of episodes, but it is true that the more you watch, and the more you get to know about its massive world, the better it gets

fia

It is a joke lol as people always say wait till this episode then it gets good

Fabulous

Don’t worry about it! Hope everything’s going well in your personal lives and I’m lookin forward to the next uploads!

Krykee

The thing you gotta always keep in mind is just how long OP has been going for. Oda started this in '97 when he was like 22, I personally caught up 10 years later (middle school for me) right as Thriller Bark started; alot of people have been with it for that long if not longer. I say all that to say that speaks to both the quality improvement overtime on Oda's part (he's literally getting older and better) but also the "quality level" discussion because alot of people have been with the series since we were preteens/teenagers.

YetiCoolBrother

Next ones are scheduled up so we should be back to consistency Sorry for the weirdness this month it got pretty bad there

BOLDcast

"This is one peak" FINALLY! bro is onboard. Carson development is what i love to see.

Artemis

It’s only been two hours and I’m craving the next episodes! So glad yall are appreciating this as much as I did on the first watch

Krykee

Lmao I’m just explaining why I think it took me as long compared to others How many other reaction channels/regular viewers took nearly 400 episodes of a show before they really loved it? I feel like a lot of the criticism we receive from our videos comes from that question of “When I watched for the first time I was in deep from the beginning, what’s wrong with them?”

BOLDcast

That was a really good description of the saying "it gets good at this episode"

Gino

Agree to disagree, unless if you are talking about pacing

Gino

The mental gymnastics Carson performs when trying to explain that he really likes something is quite incredible 🤣 For me the ending of Skypiea was when I first thought that One Piece was amazing, and it was solidified as my favourite at "I want to live", but even saying it's my favourite is nothing compared to how I feel about it now. When you catch up and look back and see just how much is going on and witness payoffs that could only be achieved in a story this long, it starts to boggle the mind, and that's what I want from a story, or anything really. Now watch my mental gymnastics You know in Hunter x Hunter how people can awaken Nen just by really caring about stuff, like even hobbies? Like Komugi who uses Nen without realising it when playing that boardgame? I think Oda awoke Nen for writing stories lol. Sometimes people are born with immense talent and they just so happen to get into the field that they were meant for. I'm sure lots of people are born with immense talent but never find the thing they're good at. I think Oda was born to write this story. Messi, Usain Bolt, Muhummad Ali, Michael Jackson, Steve Irwin, Eiichiro Oda. I am actually insane

SomeoneElse

wait it till you reach episode 1000, it gets better after that

Fabulous

the more show you watch, the more critical you get over time. Naruto was my first anime so I was blown away when I first watched it, did not really see any story or pacing issue at all. By the time I watched one piece, I have seen enough that I was very critical about one piece. It took me till Alabasta Arc to actually get into it. On a second and further watch, I have enjoyed previous arcs before Alabasta too.

Fabulous

Oda had the world on fire for weeks straight

Martin Hagen

Oh no you might think you’re ready but trust me you’re not. Starting from Sabody, Oda went on a generational run for five whole arcs. It slows down some times and some anime pacing crap here and there but you could call it his magnum opus.

Mo

Enjoy this ride

UltimaJosh

she does not know da way

charlie

I recommend rewatching the flashback with shanks and buggy in episode 8 to see if you recognize anyone.

Brian McTigue

Carson's having his "holy shit this story is so good" moment. I remember mine.

Irrevenant

Hey Carson, Definitely people have different thresholds and I am glad it seems to be meeting yours.

Nicolas LeBlanc

The One Peak is real

J.D.

I was locked into One Piece after Water 7. Before then I didn't really care too much about One Piece. I had made it my mission to fully watch every single major Shounen battle manga, and had already completed Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and Bleach. I had heard good things about One Piece, and I knew that it was in the Big 3 for a reason.

Lūthér Hölâyèãhmé

The feeling you are feeling since the beginning of this arc will stay throughout this saga - nearly the entire length of Hunter x Hunter. It will also leave you craving for infinitely more at the end. In my personal opinion, while the story does build up in the following arcs, the anime pacing w/ the story might struggle. So I suggest you buckle up and savour this saga! <3
