One Piece Thriller Bark Podcast/Discussion

i just want to say i love the way you guys are reacting to the series. not every reactor will analyze the story beyond what is just presented in the context of the show. i've enjoyed the deep dives behind oda's motivations and the choices he made while writing. I'm excited for you to see the rest!

Let me play Devil’s Advocate and just say that without Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark would not be the same. I also have to state that Enies Lobby is backed up by Water Seven. So without Water Seven, Enies Lobby would not be the same. No shades towards Thriller Bark because I do rate it as a quality arc with topnotch humor, different island aesthetic than the rest, and how the Straw Hats grew so much as a pirate crew because of the events at Enies Lobby. I want to mention, Luffy did not fought any marines after his match with Lucci. It was all the other Straw Hats holding their own against the captains and marines while surviving a Buster Call. Without that, the match between Oars/Moria and the Straw Hats minus Luffy would not be as impactful as it was. That growth as a crew matters because we saw at the start of Sabaody while they were rescuing Camie and Hachi, everybody had to step up and fight against the Flying Fish Riders. They can’t just rely on the monster trio, which were the cases for the arcs before LRLL, other than the 1v1 matchups in Alabasta and Skypiea. Everyone would probably say that I’m looking at Enies Lobby nostalgically or with rose-tinted glasses, I really don’t see that as an issue personally. Another thing you mentioned is the Straw Hats scrounging around for keys to rescue Robin. I don’t understand this criticism, if you’re just insinuating that Oda used the key objective as a ploy to have the Straw Hats run around the Tower of Justice to get their respective match ups. I would argue when hasn’t One Piece use the crew running around to advance the narrative arc? Since Syrup Village , Luffy and others are always running around villages and islands. In Lougetown, Little Garden, Alabasta, Skypiea, Water Seven, Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, and hell, even right now in Sabadoy, the Straw Hats are running around, escaping from Sentomaru and the Pacifista. I feel that running around an island until a story beat is introduced is part of the exploration and adventure of the series. Again, not hating on Thriller Bark, I always liked it, before the memes and before the criticisms, it’s a B-tier arc to me. And its cool that Carson and Lindsay did enjoy this arc more than Enies Lobby. Sure i wish they could’ve liked Enies Lobby more because of its monumental significance of the narrative, characterization, world building, power scaling in terms of the authoritarian government controller power structure and in the shonen sense.

I guess I must provide my input here. Once again, I want to iterate that I never was a huge fan of ennies lobby as much as some people claimed to be the peak of OP. I understand why people loved it so much for its highly suspenseful triumph character moments especially attributed to its action and fights, but I think it’s one arc that plays too heavily off the generic shonen tropes. Ideas that are not well executed like scrounging around for keys to get to the top of the tower and having to go in a particular order (why not just rescue robin now and worry about unlocking her cuffs later?) and why hand out keys in the first place if the whole thing is just a decoy. Remember the dude, who could basically teleport with his door door fruit? Why didn't he just take Robin with him and get her to the gate of justice? There just seems to be certain aspects of conveniences that imped the progress of the story for cliché moments like this. Basic 1v1 fights that were not very well set up in a way that they felt like a natural part of the story. Like the characters were forced to play by the enemy’s rulebook. You can kind of feel that oda was still borrowing to heavily from his early days of substandard writing and direction. So, getting back to thriller bark, I think ultimately the reason I love this story so much is because it strikes a good balance of character moments, comedy, lore, fights and writing principles that all work together in tangent and feel more natural. Each scene you can point to and be like “ok that’s what led up to that and it makes sense” “this scene is connected to that scene” “this is setting up this as an implication for the future”, etc. Moria as a character at first glance doesn’t seem that intimidating or malicious, but underneath it all lies a complex archetype with some serous life experiences that shape who he has become. Rather an antagonist just being a villain for the sake of evilness, I much prefer moria’s complex dynamic here and he's also one of the villians that has the same lofty goal as luffy's to be pirate king. I think other reasons I love this arc can’t be fully understood until boldcasts get further but there is something to say about what linsey’s said in this podcast about how future information could retroactively make a paticular story a big deal which is definitely true about this arc as well. Finally I want to state that this arc feels like an evolution of oda's writing, a precurser of proper buildup and larger expanding idea's that we will see come full force in the very near future with plot implications that are hugely significant. Anyways those are my thoughts, I could probably ramble on talking about this for ever, but ill stop here.

Artemis

Really caught me off guard, and in a good way how much you really enjoyed Thriller Bark and for what it was. One of my favorite discussions. keep it up guys.

Youtube comments are a whole different beast. The first episode they released on youtube has spoilers for stuff that happened that week in the manga XD. I also can not stand overacting. I am able to spot it right away and it just gives cringe minecraft youtuber vibes. I still think Boldcast's reactions to haikyu are top tier because they arent constantly screaming. When it finally gets to the crazy parts and carson is literally jumping out of his chair you know he is really hype.

Ty

Thanks for taking the time to answer this question elaborately. I guess I wouldn’t be too interested in watching exaggerated reactions as it would just look like terrible overacting to me, but I am not the target audience clearly. However it’s good to know and understand as it explains a lot of why Boldcast appear to regularly feel like they need to justify their reactions or lack thereof and/or almost apologetically explain that they weren’t surprised by X or Y. I guess the Patreon community doesn’t reflect whatever goes on in the YouTube comments.

Jambron

Lots of people just want over exaggerated reactors. It really is as simple as that. When something hype happens the audience wants you to scream. When something sad happens you are supposed to ball your eyes out. Also a lot of the reaction audience will not watch every episode they just want to crazy moments. One piece is weird because while it’s a shonen you do get more people interested in the analysis of it. There is a reason every booktuber is reading one piece and not Naruto for example. Another thing is a lot of react audiences are ESL or foreign so having an exaggerated reaction makes it easier to watch. I’m not going to watch a Japanese reactor that is more focused on analysis if I don’t speak Japanese but I may watch one if they have hype reactions to certain moments. This isn’t to throw shade at any of the hype reactors but they placate a lot of their content to children. You see it often where someone who is known for their super exaggerated reactions doesn’t react as hype to a moment and the audience will go crazy on them. It’s frustrating to see people shit on Boldcast when they aren’t even as analytical as they may want to be. Any criticism and questioning of a piece of media is lambasted by children in the comments. This is unless the community as a whole agrees with the analysis. It’s cool to shit on blue lock because everyone has admitted to themselves that the animation is poor. Boldcast was saying this from the beginning but now it’s cool. To bring it back to one piece, Boldcast will question if oda intended something because they are genuinely curious of the writing process and people will shit on it. I think there is an element of people growing tired of a reactor consistently being negative however most of that audience wants 0 critical thought. Zoro vs Kaku is probably not in most people’s best zoro moments. A lot of people probably do not remember 90% of the fight. However if there is any criticism of it people will defend it with their lives. Skypeia isn’t as well liked by the community so it’s ok to criticize. Enies lobby is held in high regard by one piece fans so any criticism is attacked. Anyways that was a bunch of yapping to say most people just want crazy reactions because it makes them feel good

Ty

So you guys often make these BOLD claims (sorry, I had to 😂) that you're different, as in you are on another level or mindset from the other reactors that make similar content. I'm coming from the point of view of somebody who doesn't actually know much about the reactor world. One Piece is the only manga (and anime show) where I care enough about the depth of the storytelling to be interested in proactively seeking what people I don't know at all read into it. During the release of the Netflix show, I became curious and tried to gauge whether it served its purpose of attracting new audiences, and that's how I randomly strolled into your channel. I trust when you say that you have a more analytical approach. After all I decided to support you guys on a whim because I found your discussions interesting. As it's your main source of income and you've entertained me/given me food for thought with your discussions, I think it's only fair, but I don't even watch the other shows you react to. I'm genuinely curious: What's the point of watching other reactors if they don't have any analytical or critical perspectives? I'd be interested in some of the Boldcast community here giving some input if they watch other reactors, too. And to make sure I'm not offending anyone, this is not criticism or judgment. There's no malice in the question: We all have different things we look for in the content we watch. For instance, even though I work in the gaming industry, I'm not really a fan of watching "Let's play" content except when I'm working on understanding where people get stuck on gameplay mechanics, but I can sort of understand why some people like it for entertainment.

Jambron

I'd say overall it's a hot take to like Thriller Bark more than Enies Lobby but it's like an insane opinion

Redding Tier

The arc was fantastic, the beginning had a lot of comedy because of Usopp, Nami and Chopper. Later there were fights against their "shadow versions" Pervert (Sanji) vs. Pervert (Absalom) - Negative vs. Negative - Doctor vs. Doctor and so on. If Moria had deformed his shadow he could have stretched like Luffy :'DZoro's new sword which is really cool. After that there were small moments that were a bit boring, but then at the end, Nightmare Luffy and Nothing happened and Laboon got hope :)

Corazon

I don't think it's weird to like Thriller Bark more than you did Enies Lobby. Especially at the point you're at in the story. I know I've mentioned this in other comments, but the main reason Thriller Bark doesn't seem so high in many people's rankings (and it also doesn't mean some people don't still rank it very high) is where it sits in the story and how engaging the stuff just before and afterwards is. I think perhaps in the grand scheme of things, it "might" feel like Enies Lobby moves more chess pieces in the overall plot than the bulk of Thriller Bark, which is primarily gags, tropes and Scooby doo moments. Still, that's not even a certainty, as we haven't gotten to the end of this story (and it is a subjective take anyway). Enies Lobby does have some pacing issues at some points and moments that fall a bit flat (I see you, Kaku). The main selling points are the World Gov/Ohara stuff, Gear 2nd and 3rd, and the crew dynamics (Robin's big moments, losing the Merry/gaining Franky and the Sunny). A lot happens and changes. Regardless of that, there's still a new crewmate, the Laboon callback and some significant lore drop in the stuff happening with Thriller Bark that reverberates with the rest of the story. I won't go into any details for obvious reasons as you'll have to discover that on your journey. Any person who says to skip TB, especially on a first watch, is bananas. Or just making a joke about the Nothing Happens meme, I suppose.

Jambron

Hey, I'm on that boat. Though I will say the last two the manga are on right now are putting up a fight. To me it's an arc with a dedication to going up against one of the biggest struggles the series has, and that's consequences combined with comedy. Tons of people say nobody has to worry about death, but at the same time may complain they watched Sanji's character get murdered. And Oda knew it was not only Franky's first chance to shine as a real Strawhat, but it was in a way Robin's as well. I like to think there's a subtle lore expression in that all those fancy efficient holds were something she only learned later in life. Through this arc she shows what she's used to survive. I would kill for thriller bark released as a 3hr movie in theatres for the live action. Would make for a lovely midnight movie.

Tomas

Since it didn't look like you made any of the way there, clearing up the "little contradiction", Lola's one of the one piece situations where it's hoped you only really need to piece things together if you care to dig into it. Although it's a stretch I feel like I'm not just connecting my own dots. All of Perona's Zombies are animal fused, not to say all the animals are hers. It's shown how Moria programs the shadows, so they do get ones assigned to them. The idea is, if you remember how kumashi got treated as Perona's best friend, and you recognize how Absalom treated woman, the pink elephant corpse was fused with someone Persona tried to make friends probably to keep her safe from him. Edit: actually I think you picked this up during your episodes reactions at some point, just not in this podcast

Tomas

Makes me happy when people appreciate thriller bark as much as you

fia

Despite what other people are saying in these comments, Thriller Bark as your favorite arc (or one of your favorites) IS a controversial take. But hey, that's why we watch your reactions, to hear what you really think...

ImZeaT

No, since it's not good at all...

ImZeaT

Bro just go watch the fishman island remake.

Foxfire

I think a lot of people love Thriller Bark, I remember Merphy was one of them. It's not really controversial.

Gino

Thriller bark is an awesome arc and if you like it more than Enies lobby I think is understandable
