Cougars, along with being the biggest cat with a true purr, also have the distinction of owning the most different names for a species. What most folks call a panther is the black variety that is the namesake of the upcoming Marvel movie, as well as Bagheera in the Jungle Book; but those are actually melanistic (the opposite of an albino) leopards or jaguars. If you look closely at the 'black panthers' you can see their spots hiding under the black coloring.
