I wouldn't say the battle system is bad -- it's just incomplete. There are various aspects to it that you simply won't get until the story is progressed (or Bai Huan enters the academy). So if you feel it needs improvement, that's most likely why. As far as adding concept of material arts (Skills), That's already where the game is headed in terms of directions. Playing 0.8 to it's end begins to lead in a strong direction towards that and Mai's story plays a pretty important part.
