The role of voiceovers in an adult game
Added 2016-03-21 22:12:36 +0000 UTCI'm deep in audio editing mode as I review, edit and insert voice over clips in Celesta U. As always, I am experimenting and learning as I think about how yet another elements will hopefully enhance the game experience. The first challenge was to find the talent. In Mysteria Lane, I found a great group on Fiverr. It wasn't easy-- the explicit nature of the content made finding talent willing to take it on was challenging. In the current game, I felt the player would expect the ante raised. While MLane was a more intimate investigation of a household, CU is a much bigger world, filled with lots of characters-- and players would expect to hear lots of different voices-- and a lot more explicit dialogue.
I was skeptical at first with ExtraLunchMoney, but it has represented an excellent source of great VO talent. Given the typical request made there, it wasn't out of line (I only got 2 refusals, which, considering the normal requests, I thought was odd!). Where I had to tread a bit more lightly with dialogue w/my Fiverr guys, the ELM ladies were fine with it. So this game will have a combo of both Fiverr and ELM talent (I count 29 separate voices represented).
What comes through is the personality. I have tried to match dialogue with a personality and backstory, but it is really what the talent brings that is interesting. As I was reviewing, I was already thinking "Gee, she's sweet!" or "Ugh-- not for me" or anywhere in between. Every script included some small mood direction but it was really up to the talent to take it on or not. All did to some degree and I think you'll find some surprisingly engaging reads. They are simple one liners for the most part, but I've tried to make them memorable. With so many paths per character, I'm hoping the player will want to play the game over if only to satisfying some curiosity ("I wonder what she'll say when I request this?").
As always, it is Patron investment that has made it all possible-- thank you Patrons!

I really think I've found a new way to do these kinds of games-- it is kind of exciting!
