Holiday Hell

Here's a messy drawing of Zib for no particular reason.

Comics are underway, but I don't know that I'll be posting as much content as I wanted to or as soon as I wanted to, before the end of the month.  I'd characterize the past week as an unrelenting comedy of errors...except that none of what's happened has been very funny.  Mostly just broken and wet.

I've been in Massachusetts the past week to see family for the holiday.  I brought my equipment with me so I could keep working on comic pages while here, but my laptop keeps black-screening and my Cintiq didn't make the trip fully in tact.  It currently looks like this, held together with wood and tape to try to keep the cable connection as much in place as possible.  This hasn't been very conducive to progress.

More problematic, though, is the record breaking rainfall happening in St. Louis right now.  My cellar has flooded and my roof is leaking everywhere, including onto my desktop computer and large Cintiq at home...and I'm not there to do a single thing about it.  I'm lucky to have friends and cat-sitters valiantly doing damage control at the moment,  but it looks like late tomorrow I'll be coming home to a very wet, very cold house (the cellar flood killed my heater).  This is not good...but I don't know yet just how not good, whether or not I'll need to live elsewhere for a time or if I'll even have functioning electronics to work with.

I was very excited to be so close to sharing the final bits and pieces of Volume 2 with everyone, but it doesn't seem that's going to happen on the intended schedule.  I'll do my best to get at least something up before New Years, but because everything is pretty uncertain right now, I felt I should post an update here to explain myself.

With no aspirations to martyrdom, if you wish to alter or drop pledges, I absolutely understand.  You've all been very wonderful, I'll be interminably grateful for your support, and you deserve better than this.  No matter how much I wish I was in control of the present situation, though, I'm not, and I do apologize.

Oh noooooo! Do you happen to have a warranty still on the Cintiq? Electronic jacks are just the worst sometimes. Either way, we believe in you!

Recremen

It'll take more than a drizzly roof and some duct tape to shake me off your tail. ;) This kind of thing is exactly why we support you, Tracy. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. I hope the new year brings better luck to you. You deserve it.

Jonathon Dobbs

Please don't feel obligated to sustain that pledge amount. I think my insurance should cover the damages. It's really more the time lost to replacing and repairing things that's worrying me. In any case, thank you, Ella - that's really terribly generous.

Tracy Butler

I appreciate that very much. Thank you, Katherine.

Tracy Butler

I owe it to incredibly supportive patrons like you to remain productive, but I'm also simply anxious to just get back to work as usual, and get the new updates finished up. Hopefully it won't be but a short delay. Thank you for being so understanding in the meantime.

Tracy Butler

I'm very sorry about your grandparents' home. That's absolutely tragic. Mine is damaged, but it's still there. I can only image how traumatic it would be to lose it all, along with a lifetime of memories. I hope your family is coping with it and doing well now. Anyway, thank you for your kindness and understanding. As soon as I can get Zib and my cintiq to cooperate, I'll get those new updates out.

Tracy Butler

Thank you, Stephen.

Tracy Butler

I really appreciate that - thank you.

Tracy Butler

Thank you, Jenn.

Tracy Butler

We support you through ups AND downs because we enjoy your work and like you as a person. You do what you need to do and we'll still be here when you return. :) I hope the bad news stops coming and you get some good news soon.

Jenn Lantrip

Aww, I'm sorry things are so rough! Don't worry about us, we are here for you! :)

Laura Hatch

Just wanted to say that thank you for the update and I hope things get better soon. I will be supporting you for a while whether this takes a week, month or a bit longer to get back on your feet.

Stephen Smoogen

Mae

I'm with you there but on my 2006 21UX the cables are hard wired into the unit (unlike the 2010 and onwards models). A cable replacement from an authorised Wacom Agent was $200+ (ouch)

Stephen Rushbrook

Oh my, I am so sorry to hear all this awful stuff is happening to you! Please, at this point, don't worry about Lackadaisy too much, and focus on taking care of yourself and sorting out these misfortunes. Know you have my sincere support, and pledge stays put - I just wish I could do more!

Ava

Oh dear god, Ms. B, I'm so sorry! I won't be altering my pledge, I can certainly wait until you get your things organized. That's just awful, I'm so sorry!

Katherine Fae

It definitely counts. Patreon is good like that. And thank you - that's exceedingly generous. Please don't feel any obligation to sustain that, though. If things work as they should, my insurance should cover the water damage.

Tracy Butler

Thank you, Camilla. =) I hope so too.

Tracy Butler

Thank you, Debra. I hope so too - I'd like to be back to my normal life of comics and cat-stewardship as soon as possible.

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Stephen. I appreciate your ongoing support.

Tracy Butler

That's my hope too. I really just want to finish these pages and wrap up Volume 2 after all this time. Thank you for understanding.

Tracy Butler

Thank you. I hope so too. I'll keep everyone updated.

Tracy Butler

Thank you, Garrett.

Tracy Butler

Thank you. I hope so too, and I'm grateful to have the support.

Tracy Butler

Thank you, Ragnar. It means a lot to know that.

Tracy Butler

It was a very eventful and positive year overall. Even if the year didn't end on a high note, though, complaining hardly seems justified. Patrons here have been incredibly supportive and understanding...the response here means a lot and has made this situation seem all the more tolerable. Thank you.

Tracy Butler

The only way I've altered my pledge is to send a little more over to try and help out in any way I possibly can; I'm just sorry it's not that much. I hope the flood damage is relatively minimal, and honestly, instead of sketches and comic updates right now, I'd rather just know that you're all safe and sound and mostly not stressed out and exhausted from worrying about Patreon and update deadlines, though I know the latter state is really hard to ignore :( Keep smiling beautiful x <3

Ella Kingstone

Thank you, Maklarr.

Tracy Butler

It's more the lost work time than the money I'm worried about just now, assuming my home insurance does what it's supposed to do, so please don't feel like you're under any obligation to sustain a pledge that high. That's really terribly generous and thoughtful, either way, though. Thank you.

Tracy Butler

Thank you - I appreciate the sentiment. I don't want anyone to stretch their finances because of this - I really just wanted to make sure everyone understood some later-than-anticipated updates. Hopefully my insurance will do its job and cover this and I won't need to seek other means, but if I do, I will keep mini-fundraisers in mind.

Tracy Butler

Thank you. I'm hoping I can just get home, clean up and be back to work in a couple of days, but I will keep everyone updated if the damage is worse than that.

Tracy Butler

Thank you. =)

Tracy Butler

Alas, the point of Patreon was to mitigate the months-for-pages situation. Thank you for your understanding, though.

Tracy Butler

Thank you. It's already quite generous and understanding of you if you're willing to be a little patient about the comic update.

Tracy Butler

I think I already understand. I know it wasn't a plea for money, but money seemed the most proximate way of expressing support. Doubling down, if you will.

Doscher

This wasn't a plea for funds, and I really hope it doesn't come off that way. It's stuff my insurance should (hopefully) cover. I'm just trying to pre-explain my lateness. Thank you for your steadfast support, though. I don't presently have the mental energy to try to explain what it means, but it means things.

Tracy Butler

Thanks, David. I know you and Liz had pretty significant fire damage to deal with not long ago. You handled it admirably and were back to productivity in no time, it seems. I hope I can sort out my mess with even a fraction of the same resolute grace. =)

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Ragark. Your support has meant a lot. I hope the damage isn't as extensive as it sounds - I'll find out late tonight (if the weather doesn't delay my flights). Best case scenario is that I can just get back home, clean up and get back to work within the next couple of days...but we'll see. I hope you've been enjoying the holiday season too.

Tracy Butler

That's very kind - thank you. Please don't go out of your way financially, though. Homeowners' Insurance should cover a lot of this. Congratulations on your promotion, in any case!

Tracy Butler

Thanks - I think I might look into those. As much as I like the Cintiq tablet itself, Wacom did a pretty deplorable job of engineering the cable connection. I've had the thing for a little more than a year and I'm on my third cable replacement already. Anyway, thank you very much for your understanding.

Tracy Butler

Thank you

Tracy Butler

Thank you - I appreciate that.

Tracy Butler

My pledge shall remain - I only wish I could afford to up it. You have been, and shall remain, my primary source of internet-based Cats-Doing-Human-Things Comedy. I hope that the beginning of your New Year goes smoother than the end of this one.

Stephen

Just upped my pledge from $20 to $50. Will leave it there for a couple of months or so. Hope what ever fraction of that that filters through to you helps.

Stephen Rushbrook

I'm so sorry to hear that, don't worry about the comic, take care of yourself! You will always have my sword, my axe, my bow... and my pledge. I hope everything will get better soon.

Camilla

Hoping things aren't as bad as they appear at the moment and that the repairs are quick so that you and the kitties get your home up and running again. Leave? Pffft! Only wish I could help a little more than the bit I'm putting through Patreon.

Debra Delorme

And you apologise for not being able to deliver because your house got flooded? Wha...? 'Scuse me but in my book that's not something you apologise for. You sure as hell still have my support and I'll just patiently sit here and wait while you figure stuff out. Because if there has been any time that you needed support, it's right now. Here's hoping it isn't too bad.

Kinan Eldari

Fingers crossed the damage is minimal and you're able to sort your stuff out with minimal stress. I certainly won't be dropping my pledge when you need it even more. Here's looking to your future art :)

Woodchi

Aw,I'm really sorry about things and appreciate the candidness on your part, but life does happen and even though it might set you back a little bit I know you'll be back on your feet soon enough. Hang in there; You rock!

Garrett Simpson

Ouch, that sucks. Hope your stuff is all right. Take all the time you need! Hope your Patreon earnings can comfortably cover the cost of repairing any damage to your home and equipment.

antialiasis

Tracy, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm not going anywhere. I'll be supporting you until you stop creating, or until I die, whichever comes first.

Ragnar Drayke

Man, way to end the year huh? Well, like many of us here, I still plan on supporting you and I'm gonna be upping my pledge as well. Then take care of yourself, and thanks for giving us all a heads up about your situation thus far.

GreenAngel5

Phew! The title had me really worried there for a minute! I'm very relieved YOU are okay Ms. Butler! At first I thought maybe you got sick or hurt or something. As wonderful as the Cintiq and all that stuff is, it's still all just stuff that can be replaced, repaired, or made right. There are plenty of us to help you out if and when it comes to that. I fully understand any delays there may be- life has a way of throwing off even the most meticulous schedules. As many have said before, if there's any way we- your cat-crazed legion of loyal fans- can help, just say the word. Take care Ms. Butler, and good luck in the days ahead!

Maklarr4000

You know, if anything this makes me want to increase my pledge rather than decreasing or canceling. At least temporarily until you're back up and on dry ground again. I mean, what is this platform but a community dedicated to helping keep our favorite creatives, well, creating? For this reason alone I'm upping my pledge by $10. At least for the next few months without expectation of anything in return. I pray enough of us answer the call that we may help bridge the gap between you and what provides us with so much joy and entertainment.

McDoopin Draws

This seems like a very, very fitting sketch for the theme of things right now! I hope this storm (both literal and figurative) passes quickly. In the meantime, if there are damages to your home or important electronics significant enough that you could use some help, there are some great mini-fundraising options online. I've had various friends of the family use them for help with emergency vet bills, a flood-damaged house, and a collapsed ceiling. While I wouldn't be able to boost my Patreon pledge for the long-haul, I would totally be able to donate to, and help signal-boost, a one-time thing like that if you ever needed to set it up. Either way, good luck!

Leigh Legler

I'm not pledging for the tote bag, I'm pledging because I want to support a great artist =) Take care of yourself and your kitties! I'm sure we'll survive a little wait for new content.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Chiming in with the 'Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help' comments and hoping that for your sake that the damage is minimal and the clean-up painless.

Michelle Husted

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help! I went through a similar situation a few years ago, and it was not fun, to say the least. I hope that karma or whatever kicks in and your house and equipment are all ok, and that your holidays are still pleasant regardless of the situation. Safe travels home, and don't worry about the comic; we've waited months for pages before, so I think we can handle this little hiatus ;)

blueeyedintrovert

I'm happy to continue to support your work, and will up my pledge as soon as I'm able. You're doing one of the most interesting comics I've ever seen, and anything I'm able to give seems to me an investment in the future and a ward against entropy. I hope things work out alright at home. Just remember that as dark as things look right now, at least you're not the remake of 'Point Break'.

Doscher

Let us know if there's anything we can do to help patch things up for you so you can get back into gear. I'm sure we can do something to remedy your situation. :)

Duster

Thank you for keeping everyone in the loop- misfortune strikes on occasion. Take care of yourself and your habitation first, I'm certain virtually everyone here will be happy to maintain our support until you can get your situation squared away. You have enough obstacles to tackle, so I hope you will be assured that pressure from your readership isn't one of them at present. Do what you gotta do, and best of luck. 8 )

David Lillie

Tracy, I hope things at home are less horrible than the forecast reality, and that you can restore your home soon enough for your own comfort. I don't think anyone here would be less than appreciative of your words given the present situation and speaking on my behalf you don't need to worry, even if it means the world to get to see more from this wonderful lackadaisy world you have created, I wouldn't drop my pledge for a delay on a schedule only you are imposing to yourself, in fact the only way I'd do such a thing is that I become jobless and homeless, the paramount priority is that you are OK. I do hope you had a good time with your family in these holidays. Ragark

Prince Sitri

I sincerely hope that the damage is minimal and that you can, at the very least, continue living in your home. That sounds so stressful! Until now I haven't been able to offer anything but the minimum pledge, but I recently had a bit of holiday luck in the form of a promotion, so I think I should be able to afford moving up a tier to help show my enduring support for you during this tough time. Thanks as always for providing the best web comic I read, and the only one I care to pay money to support.

Britta Fogerty

Do not apologise for what it outside your control. I feel for you and the impending cataclysm of waterlogged electronics. And I weep for your little cintiq... That looks painful. I feel I can speak for most Lackadaisy fans. We are a patient and understanding group. We have in the past waited months for a new page :P. The current delays mean nothing to us :D Just make sure you desktop and big Cintiq are dry enough before attempting to turn them on.... Btw should you find your self in need to replace the cintiq 13". I can heartily recommend the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Yours Stephen 'ohnhai' Ryshbrook

Stephen Rushbrook

My like is for the Zib drawing, not the rest of the your post :( Hope things work out for the best!

300BillionDegrees

Crud happens, and it sounds like you could use the support of your followers more than ever. My pledge is very tiny, admittedly, but I certainly won't be dropping it. Stay well and I hope circumstances improve for you in time for the New Year!
