SUPERMAN [2025] - FULL REACTION!!

Another movie hits the Patreon!

This time, we're checking out James Gunn's Superman. I'll be up front with you [I do mention this in the beginning but sometimes, you lovely lot skip it] I'm not a fan of Superman BUT... could this change? Is this the movie, the story that wins me over to the man in red pants and a cape.

James Gunn's movies to me are a one and done type of thing but I've heard very good things about this movie so call me curious!

All I can say is that I do laugh quite a bit so I hope I don't blow your ears out... You have been warned! I've also got a lot to say at the end hence the post watch review is longer than most.

I hope you're enjoying the movie and TV show reactions as much as I am, bring on the next one!!

SUPERMAN [2025] - FULL REACTION!!

Comments

The lighting and color grading here is sort of two-purpose: First is to emphasize the sun, as both a natural symbol of hope and because Superman derives his power from the sun. Second is to give the film a bit of a golden/old timey look. Gunn’s said quite a few times now he really wanted to give tribute to both the “Golden Age of comics” and also to the timeless nature of the character himself

Luke Cooper

My favourite scene was actually the cameo of Supergirl 🙃 Its silly, but I'm all in to watch a movie with such a main character (probably also because I really like Milly Alcock overall) And in general, in this movie I liked secondary characters way more than superman himself

I think the main reason as to why I love this movie comes down to the feeling this movie brings. Many including myself wanted a Superman that has a quote “Boy Scout personality”. A Superman that just wants to save people and do good. Which to me this movie shows with him saving a squirrel. Trying to cause minimal damage and casualties when fighting the big monster. You kept mentioning the bright lighting and honestly I really liked that about the movie. Because to me it sort of signifies hope, when we see Superman he brings brightness and hope. So him being back lit with a bright sun to me shows that. :) Either way I’m glad you enjoyed it though. We all have our opinions, whether agreeable or not. 👍🏽

I think this movie will be an enduring favourite of mine for a very long time, but my Dad enjoyed it to the level you did. He had fun, he laughed, and he probably won’t remember much in 5 years time beyond Krypto. I’m glad both groups of people had fun watching this movie and felt good!

Another first watch alongside the channel! I wouldn't have watched this on my own I'm sure. I usually hate super hero movies. I didn't enjoy the lighting at all but some comedy bits had me rolling, they were really good. Specially the dog. Great comedy timing in the writing by Gunn. It's definitely in the same realm as Guardians of The Galaxy

I messed with the reaction and love you Kai, though there were a lot of times where you criticized the film being "too cgi" when the shots and movement were all practical (as seen in the bts footage), for example the flying shots against the monster and the fight with the engineer, both just the actor being shot on a rotor with touch ups made. Idk I just felt the need to clarify since it seemed to be a very big criticism from you

There was some things I loved with these movie but there was some things that I absolutely hated as well. With a lot of the james Gunn movies the humor is really great a lot of the times but it's overused and like you said it takes you out of the movie. I really loved many of the side characters like Green lantern, Mr.Terrific, Hawkgirl(hated her scream) Lex Luthor, The engineer, Metamorpho. But at the same time I really hated what James Gunn did with some of the characters like Martha and Jonathan Kent. To me from watching smallville and man of steel, they are the heart and soul of Clark. To me in this movie except from that one scene between Clark and Jonathan. They felt like a senile old couple that were in the movie just to take the piss out of them. Same with Jimmy Olsen is just a huge douchebag for no reason and the dog.... to me he felt like the Jar Jar Binks of this movie. I think I hate the dog even more than that and that is coming from someone who loves dogs irl. Seeing at the end that Supergirl seems like a human version of the dog makes me not interested in seeing that movie even though I love Milly Alcock from house of the dragon. Frank Grillos character is the father of Rick Flag from the suicide squad movies(who was played by joel kinnaman) and the guy who you mentioned at the end as the guy from the guardian movies is James Gunn IRL brother who also played the weasel in the suicide squad movie.

Visually they're going for a comic book brought to life vibe. Superman is supposed to be bright and hopeful, not dark and broody like the Snyder movies, so that 's what they're trying to capture with the visuals. I think they've said every movie in the new DCU is going to have it's own style and tone to fit the project/character(s). Regarding the Snyder movies I don't even think there's anything good about them aside from the action. Superman doesn't even have a personality.

As some other comments have mentioned, we need The Batman next! It will be so far up your alley, it may as well be a hooker lmao

The one thing about this film (I don’t want to call it an issue because I don’t know what to call it) is the cinematography. The camera movement during certain scenes with the wide angle that accompanies it, just throws me off a little. This is the same cinematographer that James Gunn has worked with on Guardians Volume 2 and Volume 3, The Suicide Squad, and he also worked on The Flash 2023 film. I don’t even know how to describe it, other than odd, unique, and oddly unique. Gunn seems to really like sharp and fluid movements of the camera, and I think it works sometimes, but in certain moments it just threw me off, especially with some of the action scenes. Loved hearing your thoughts on the same topic, and just the entire movie.

Grant Peters

As a complete contrast and comparison to this, can we get The Batman next please?

I just think as a dc comics nerd it was just nice to have a good (not great) Superman movie in ages. As someone who absolutely hates the Henry Cavill movies this one was a pleasant surprise! I have same gripes about the colors and camera as you, but as a fan it was pretty good start to a new DC universe!🤝

Janne Tabell

Same I preferred this more. I was getting sick of the dark superman stuff. Finally got s modern take on a classic superman and felt great, good start to the DCU

Qadeer

Totally understand your perspective. I think man of steel misrepresented Superman as a character, so as a Superman fan I like this movie more. I love the colors and I think all the actors work well. It gave me a lot of fan service and joy as a comic and Superman nerd. But I think Man of steel visually is objectively much better looking. Or at least shot better definitely. I prefer the vibrant color palette of this movie but man of steel's cinematography was much better.

Also, in regards to Clark not having an accent, the two ideas I had are: 1.) As a media savvy person, he trained the accent out of himself 2.) He trained it out of him in order to protect the regionality in which he was raised. Not even Lois knew where he came from in America.

Pretty much. Its a shame how videos games and movies have turned into extensions of culture wars. There was a time where movies and video games could believe in something either that be an ideal or critique of something. People would engage with it intellectually, but now it feels like its just one big book burning. If you get what I mean, maybe it just feels like that though.

Local Degenerate

Sorry, not sorry fella haha. Enjoy it!

Kai Zammit

Kai… I’m meant to be getting work done this morning, you can’t be dropping bangers like this 🤣

Grant Peters

Oh interesting... Never once did I think that. 👌🏻

Kai Zammit

The movie was meant to be a week of superman, so whenever it would fade to black, it apparently was meant to show "monday, "Tuesday, "wednesday"

Qadeer

Any divisiveness of this film is due to the culture and not what Gunn wrote and directed.
