I woke up Wednesday, totally exhausted. Not sure why... I probably had a bad night. I tried to go back to sleep, but just couldn't either. So I got up, tried to work, couldn't think straits so I decided to go take a long walk. During that time, I ended up visiting a comic shop in my neighborhood that I only learned existed a few days ago, and long story short, I came back 3 hours later with the first volume of ElfQuest.
I always wanted to read ElfQuest but never got to it. The funny thing is, ElfQuest is in my art style DNA. Back last century, when I was still in college, studying art, I was struggling with drawing female characters. They always ended up looking like guys with big lips. So I asked one of my best friend at the time, a girl that I always though was a better artist than I was ( she would have said the contrary :P ), if she could help me with it. Her answer surprised me : "I don't know how to draw women," she said "But I know how to draw elves, and that seems like a good starting point". I'm paraphrasing, of course.
And with that, in the middle of a french class, she taught me how to draw ElfQuest like characters. And she was right. It helped me evolve as a comic artist quite a bit.
As for the book, I adored it. It starts as a simple, almost naïve, story but quickly became quite engaging. And somehow, the first volume end up with a foursome ( I think ) which surprised me quite a bit )
This first volume is part of the new release from Dark Horse, but I don't think I'll wait for them to release the other ones before getting the rest of the series. Volume 2 is coming out in a few days, so I'll probably get that one, but for the rest I'll probably buy an older version. I don't really care about what collection it's part of as long as I get the full story.
Anyways...
it's inspired this simple little pinup.
Hope you'll dig it.
