I've always wanted to watch this series. You've given me a reason to start up. Charisma Carpenter and John Marsters are eventually going to be in Supernatural too :)

I enjoy the show just because it's entertaining. I don't care one iota that it's about a girl getting to kick butt or any of the other "messages" it portrays throughout the run. In fact, I don't even like the character of Buffy. The appeal of that main storyline, I think, is what draws a lot of people in, though. At the time the show started, I was eleven, a black belt, teaching adult men in the sport, sparring adult men in the sport, an enforcer on my softball teams, and never had heard that I couldn't do something because I was a girl. So, it isn't a storyline that I've ever felt any type of connection to. (I didn't watch this show at eleven, though. We watched it in college because a friend was a superfan.)

Oh I cannot WAIT to watch this with you! I go through phases and wasn't on a watching phase and now you have a bunch of stuff 'stored up' for me and I'm STOKED. Thanks a million for this format, Delighted to watch it all, I probably said this once already but I already loved your music reactions and for you to shift to also doing video stuff is perfect and I'm so happy to support it! I've mentioned before I write fanfic and I wrote a few 'the gang' stories because I love their dynamic so much!!

Oh, that's really cool! Was it a band a lot of people knew of? I'd never heard of it.

The band in this episode was Sprung Monkey, an actual band! (And yeah, a lot of real bands perform at the Bronze over the life of this show, including Nerf Herder.)

The first season came out in 1997, it was a mid-season replacement for a cancelled show (Savannah) on the WB. All 12 episodes were filmed in 1996 before the season was released, on a shoestring budget and with no guarantee that they would get a second season. Season 2 has a huge step up in quality, as well as a full 22 episodes. Can't wait to see you keep going!!

And also did the Cabin in the Woods, so yes, Travis, you are correct! :D

Buffy, awesome! The show is legendary and my favorite character is without a doubt Cordelia.

Buffy is a very fun, emotional ride! Growing up, I had the biggest crush on Sarah Michelle Gellar because of this show. And, yes, there is a prequel movie to this show with a different actress as Buffy. Also, in this show, size doesn't really matter when it comes to strength. From what I remember (it's been a long time since I've seen this show), Buffy has a similar strength level to Captain America in the MCU (perhaps a bit weaker). Joss Whedon is known for great shows and movies like this, Firefly (something you should definitely react to; unfortunately there's only one season and one movie called Serenity), the Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He seems to get along with his male stars well (well, at least better than he gets along with his female stars), but his relationships with his female stars is rocky at best. He's known for being quite difficult to work with, but he's definitely an entertainment genius. He has a very distinct style of humor that permeates all his work. Once again, I cannot recommend Firefly (and Serenity) enough!

Oh, I knew I forgot something. No, I don't believe the band at the Bronze is supposed to be a real band, but the show does later sometimes feature real bands. I know there are episodes where the band Nurf Herder plays at the Bronze. That's the band that does the theme song for the show. Someone tell me if the one in this episode is them. I don't think so, but I know they do show up later in the series. That's not really a spoiler, since you wouldn't know it was them unless or until someone told you.

OMG, yes!!! I'd been hoping you would watch this one, Travis. Glad you liked the pilot episode.
As Delores mentioned, there is a movie, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It isn't necessary to watch it first, as the show finds ways to drip in everything about the lore that you need to know in order get the show, but it might be worth checking out. Fair warning, though, it's not nearly as good. The people in the movie didn't really get it, and apparently the script was heavily changed from Joss's original vision. This show is what he intended for his vision.
To answer some of your questions:
A Watcher is a person assigned to train the Slayer in battle and educate her in supernatural lore. (explained in this episode where Giles says "He trains her, he prepares her," right before or as you were asking what it means)
I wonder if the names in this show are more unusual now than they were at the time, because I've heard most of them from before the show, especially Willow. Except for Giles. I have to admit, I've never heard the name Giles before, but it's British, and I'm Canadian, so that might not mean much. Xander is short for Alexander. I have heard the name Cordelia before, though, and Xander. Oh, and yeah, Buffy's a name unique to the show and the movie that came before it.
As to the girl whose name you were asking about in the changing room scene where the body fell out of the locker. I believe her name was Aphrodisia. I wanna say that the name isn't a real name and Joss just used it for the sake of humor because the girl was making fun of how weird Buffy's name is, but I dunno, it might be a real name from somewhere and it's just unusual. It was supposed to be used for humor though.
A lot of people think season one is weaker than the rest of the series, and while that may be true, it definitely gets better as it goes on. No, seriously. You have no idea what you're in for.
You asked what we liked about the show. Without spoiling, I love the way the show continues to subvert expectations. Like the way this episode did at the beginning. The start set you up to believe that the couple breaking into the school were about to be attacked, or that the guy was the vampire, because of the music and his dialogue, but then it turns out he's just a bit of a bad boy and maybe a bit of a creep, and it's the girl who's the baddie. The show likes to flip the script on you, and it keeps things new and fresh and exciting. I also love the characterization, which gets off the charts the further you get in. I love the way the show sometimes seems like a cheesy teenage show about the supernatural, but then suddenly hits you with serious depth and sincerity. They do it sometimes out of nowhere, but still makes it work. Laatly, I like the way the show deals with a lot of common supernatural tropes or creatures (like vampires) but finds ways to make them new and different. Like the way they handle Vampire deaths. Typically, when a vampire is killed in most other shows and movies, a staking just has them fall down and die, but in this episode, you saw what happened when Buffy staked one. It exploded into dust. The writers have explained that they did this to avoid having to figure out what to do with the bodies, or explain how no one finds them, but in universe, it's also a really neat way to have the deaths look cool. I also love the idea of the "vamp face." I heard that this was to make it easier to tell the difference between a normal human and a vampire when necessary, but in universe, it makes them look either cool or scary or both, depending on what the show is going for.
I can't wait for to watch the rest of this show with you, Travis. You're in for a real treat.
