GLEE | 1x13 'Sectionals'

Comments

I love how Brittany outs herself & Santana to the Glee club with the 'If it were Santana and I would be dating." line. LMAO. One thing I do hate is that the writers had Mercedes say to Rachel that she is the best singer in Glee club...wtf were they thinking! Whether or not people agree, Mercedes would never have said that. Both women have great vocals but that line was BS. Also trying to make me believe that Mercedes had no other song in her back pocket another ridiculous moment so Rachel could perform instead of Mercedes.

No she definitely needed to tell him

Ana

Ahhh I love “My life would suck without you” with all the choreography from the previous numbers ❤️

Kristin Baylor

I think you are the only reactor who recognized that in that last number they were doing previous number choreography, Everyone else seems to have it go right over their heads lol

Jeanette Dawe

Yes the secret needed to come out but Rachel did it for selfish reasons bc well she's a selfish person

Yes and no. TV shows from roughly the 80's through 2010 picked up pilot episodes and ordered s standard 13 episode order. Most show that had any reoccurring story elements, would have 2 types of ongoing story threads, one that would conclude at the end of those 13 episodes, and ones that could continue longer. Most news shows during this time would be cancelled either before the end of those 13 episodes or at the end of those 13 episodes. It was a cost savings choice. Give a show enough time to show if it connected with a larger audience, but not so many episodes that the studio and network would have spent 20-30 million on a project that was doomed to failure. But the plan is always, that the show engages with an audience and has enough viewers to get what is called a back order. That back order (during the 90's and 2000) was typically called the back 9, to get to what at the time was a standard order of 22 episodes (80's typically was between 22-24 episodes as seasons over the decades have tended to get shorter and shorter). So episode 13 was designed that if the show was cancelled, that many arcs would have a conclusion, but it wasn't designed to be a season ender. Now because Glee took longer to film and due post production then most shows, it tended to start filming its season earlier than most. As the show progressed and the material got even more elaborate, they started filming material from multiple episodes concurrently, this wasn't common at the time, but it help keep the production schedule on track). Glee also did the unusual by airing its pilot episode in May instead of airing it with the rest of the first season starting in September. The pilot was the 3rd highest rated episode of Fox that week in May sweeps and the 14th overall amoung all network shows (a very strong start). It also started in the fall a little earlier then normal its September premiere (its 2nd episode) was Fox's highest debut episode in over 3 years. After it aired its 3rd episode (the 2nd episode of the Fall) Fox officially order its back 9. It was Fox's fastest pickup that year, and the first network show that got a back nine that season. So when the writers were writing episode 13 they already they weren't going to be cancelled. By January, Glee had officially been renewed for its 2nd episode, this is just 2 weeks after the airing of Sectionals, and before the show aired any of the back nine. This was 4 months before Fox's upfront presentation for the next season, and the first new Fox show to get a second season renewal. During upfront in May (when most shows get to know if they were renewed for their 2nd season), Fox had already renewed it now for a third season. A this point they were only airing up to episode 18 of the first season. This show was literally after airing of its 3rd episode never in danger of getting renewed (until after season 5). In fact the show got early renewals for each season including its last season (though that season's order did get cut).

i loved that ending so muuuuuch!!!

I didn't start watching this until season 2 originally but I always thought this was a mid season finale! Interesting to know that it was supposed to be a finale.

Amber Karin

All of the songs in this episode were fantastic but Amber singing And I’m Telling You takes the cake. She sang it live each take so the reactions of the cast are their true reactions and they were just as blown away as I was. I love the tie back to a bunch of the previous numbers in My Life Would Suck Without You, such a great touch. But most importantly “Sex is not dating.” “If it was, Santana and I would be dating.”

Annie Willow

Almost all network shows are ordered with 13 episodes (at least back then). By the time episode 5, 6 and 7. They already had been giving additional script orders. But most show never make it past the first 13 (especially further back in time) so shows were absolutely planned with having some closure to some arc material. The only break they had in filming was the typical holiday breaks. Even the first 13 episodes the show was the 3rd highest rating demo show on Fox, it was in no danger at all of not getting picked up. By the episode 15 it started airing after American Idol when Idol was still a powerhouse, and it managed the best retention amount adults 18-34 out of any program up to that point that had ever followed Idol (in fact it had a handful pf episodes that actually got higher 18-34 ratings then Idol did). It was never in danger of not getting renewed, at this point, at all. By the 2nd half of the season, it was Fox second highest rated show. In all primary three demos 18-34, 18-49 and adults 25-54. Now what did change is the focus of the stories. The first 13, the writers thought the adults story line and kid storylines would be fairly evenly split. The ratings and the fan feedback from literally the get of showed that what was working for the audience was the students, not so much the adult (outside of Sue and Will) aspect of the story. So by episode 14 forward the focus of the show did change.

Yeah, you can definitely tell that they tried to "clean up" the vocals way too much on the show. I mean, these are all very good to amazing singers. They don't need all that technology to "touch up" their vocals

Since you've already been told about this being the original season 1 finale, I'll talk about other stuff. I completely forgot that the truth about the 2 pregnancies came out in consecutive episodes. For some reason, I thought that Quinn's pregnancy became known to Finn later in the season, but memories are very fickle indeed! That's why eyewitness testimony is not as infallible as people think! But yeah, you'll see some more guest appearances in the second half of the season. I'm not sure if you'll recognize them since I'm not sure what movies you've watched, but hopefully you do. I'm starting to recall that I liked the first 3 seasons better than the final 3 seasons of this show. However, the music was always great!

You can also find some versions of Amber Riley singing And I am telling you live on Youtube and there's also Live Glee concert for Season 1 and 2 (Season 2 concert is a movie) and I would recommend reacting to the first one after the season finale their live vocals in my opinion are better than in the show

vince

It def felt that way !

Travis Manning

The show was only shot for the first 13 episodes so this was the "finale" until the show got picked up for another 9 episodes for Season 1B and they did the same thing for s1 finale because they thought they wouldn't be renewed for season 2
