7:45 Accepting yourself and wanting to change/improve things about yourself sounds pretty mutually exclusive.

Sam Dulisse

I think with the changing your body thing in this case, it's more to do with racist white supremacist ingrained perceptions of appearance rather than just 'changing a part of your body and that being ok'. Like with Rachel's nose as a Jewish woman, that notion that her nose is unattractive is 100% informed by anti-semitism and white supremacy. And like with Tina's 'asian eyes' that they brought up (classic 2011 racism). Obvs the writers didn't have the ability to articulate it but it's defs more about addressing that than just 'if you wanna change a part of yourself then you should be able to', which is true but doesn't exist just in a vacuum

i'm all for do what you want with your body but in this case, they're literal kids!! i don't think you should be able to change something at such a young age... and in Rachel's case, it was never a problem for her, it was even something she liked bc she was just like Barbra, and if it wasn't for this doctor, she was never really insecure about it! and just like Puck said, "why are you getting Quinn's nose?"! Santana got a boob job at 16 like wtf??? anyway, loved this ep!

I agree with what Gemma said. It's less about the risk factor and more that in the context of that conversation, the therapist was discussing Emma's claim that her illness is who she's "meant to be." OCD has an extremely high suicide rate and is one of the most debilitating mental illnesses out there. I have a lot of mental health things but only recently was diagnosed with OCD. (I thought I couldn't have it bc I'm messy and disorganized and don't get paranoid about germs, but now I know only 40% of people suffering from OCD have contamination ocd and there are a TON of ways ocd can manifest). What the therapist said here about how no, you're not doomed to this forever, it's not some intrinsic part of you or your identity -- it's holding you back from being yourself.... is a very potent statement. I just built up to the clinical dose of my ocd medication, so within 8-12 weeks I'll find out if it's working for me. I'm really excited :D once I started learning about it, I'm seeing more and more how disruptive it is to my life. I have delusions because of it, tactile hallucinations, constant anxiety and rumination and awful intrusive thoughts... I thought I might be developing schizophrenia or some other psychosis. I feel hard for Emma watching glee now. It becomes such a focal point of daily life that you start to see it as just how your life's gonna be forever. Meds have been helping me resist compulsions a bit, I'm optimistic about it going forward :) I just wish people treated mental health as a health issue -- the brain is an organ, a physical body part. If it's not functioning properly, that should be taken seriously, and seeking treatment should be encouraged. Just my two cents <3

Before my current life as a therapist I was a med student (I've had quite the journey in this life). Just wanted to put that out there before I give my thoughts. As a therapist it's always a good idea to make sure that when you're drawing comparisons or parallels to get a point across that it resonates with your client. In this case, I can see that the parallel that the therapist is getting at has to do with the decision to accept treatment for a condition, not necessarily with the imminent threat to physical self as well as the stigma that exists about the importance of treating mental health issues as opposed to physical conditions or diseases. Emma's main problem was that up until this point, Emma hadn't accepted that her OCD was something that could be treated or helped so she was resigned to living with the negative effects of it. In my opinion, comparing the course of treatment to a well known disease such as diabetes was a good way to help Emma realize that OCD doesn't render her helpless if she doesn't want to be. Diabetes is a good comparison because if managed well through dietary and lifestyle changes and sometimes even taking medication to help keep it under control, it can mean that you may never have to feel the negative effects that the disease has on your body. Same goes for OCD...if managed well through talk therapy and behavioral therapy and even with medication to help, it can mean that you may be able to live more freely and not be as triggered about things as you have been in the past. Sometimes these conditions can be treated without medication. I have clients who do intense talk therapy as well as behavior and exposure therapy to manage the condition without medication. Many people do benefit from taking medication while attending therapy aongside of it to reduce the symptoms while they do the deeper therapeutic work. I myself was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago, and didn't want to take the medication, so I made a deal with my doctor. I asked for 3 months to try and make the necessary lifestyle and dietary changes to bring my numbers back to an acceptable range and if I did, she wouldn't prescribe me the medication with a promise from me to continue to maintain the numbers. If I didn't hold up my end of the bargain, I agreed to take the medication. Main point of all this is that mental health problems are also treatable like medical problems are and are just as important to address. Mental health problems just don't always pose the imminent physical consequences that many medical problems do.

I wasn't offended by the comparison I just don't necessarily think they are on the same playing field. Not taking care of your diabetes can kill you. Not taking care of your OCD could potentially harm you but not to the same degree, in my opinion, as not taking care of your diabetes. But I have a lot of diabetics in my family and also have my own mental health issues - and I don't envy my diabetic aunts lol.

As a mental health therapist I am curious to hear your opinion on Emma's illness? It seemed like Travis was offended to what her therapist was saying to her about diabetes and ocd being apples an oranges in that situation... I thought the counselor made some super good points about not being your illness. But he didn't like that comparison too much and I felt like it was such a good comparison. Mental health seems to be super overlooked in the world but when something in your life is hurting you that badly I think it is very important to get any kind of help for it when it is leaving such a dark effect in your life, whether it's counseling or taking drugs to help with the issue... did you see anything wrong with what the psychiatrist said to Emma in that conversation?

Forgot to make a mention of this but I believe this is the only 1HR long special Glee episode in the series (someone correct me if I'm wrong). 2x11 was an extended episode also but only by a few minutes. Season 6 has a 2 part episode but the rest of the series are all regular length episodes (excluding the movie)

I know that Santana would have never outed Karofsky because she gave him fuel against her even before she told him what she needed of him. I was really proud of how she got him to stop bullying. I really do think she was the only one who would have been able to get through to him to see what the affect his bullying has, and in the that process she was seeing it for herself. But seeing then even pretending to be together is just 🤮

As a mental health therapist, I have to say that instead of thinking in terms of right vs wrong but rather in terms of healthy vs unhealthy. If doing something to change your appearance will help you to lean into being a better person, then it's healthy and I say go for it, but I do think that these decisions should definitely not be made lightly. And they especially should not be made by hormonal teenagers whose emotions change so quickly without a lot of guidance as well parental/guardian support. As far as Santana goes, I know she's all bark and no bite with the Karofsky situation. She's shrewd and cunning and manipulative, but not evil. It would do her no good to out Karofsky, she just needs him to run for prom royalty with her. And I agree with the sentiment behind her speech in the choir room, but the delivery could have been a lot more tactful, but then again, it's Santana and she is still on a journey of her own. Naya plays the part to perfection and yes Travis, she is sooooo HOT.

Gemma Rivera

Brittany mad scares me. She’s so chill and happy all the time that you know it takes a hell of a lot for her to show that she’s mad at you.

Annie Willow

Contagious allergies ? 😂

Travis Manning

Why is it you and I always get something in our eyes at the same time?

David Guilmette

Dianna’s nose was broken and repaired and then had to be rebroken and repaired during Glee’s run and her voice actually does change throughout the series. The cool thing though, is that her voice changing follows Quinn’s character development.

Annie Willow

As If We Never Said Goodbye is such an underrated song. I know its long but I'm glad they didn't cut it down like so many other songs on this show. I like that Kurt got a moment to shine. The song is from Sunset Boulevard. Blaine is freaking adorable. Somewhere Only We Know is one of my favorite Glee songs of all time.

Ashley

if Rachel was going to have another nose by someone else in the club, i would have gone for Santana's nose lol

Spaceydoodle

I get what you are saying about improving yourself but I definitely adore you for who younare

Staton Chapman

Wouldn't Rachel need to have parental consent to have that kind of procedure done since she is a minor? That part I never understood. I also don't think Rachel wanted a nose job but that doctor was kinda unprofessional and tried to talk her into it. She will do anything to be a star. So for that, I didn't agree with her getting a nose job. But I completely agree with you about doing what's best for yourself! We all deserve to be happy with the way that we look, even if other people don't agree with it.

Amber Karin

Not sure if you noticed lol. Pucks shirt said I’m with stupid and pointed to his crotch

John buchanan

You know, I actually like the way Finn sounded in this episode! He sounded, I don't know, less harsh, more smooth, I don't know, something. Plus, he's a better dancer than me any day of the week (still jealous of Mike's dance moves)! Did you see Santana wearing the "Lebanese" shirt ("Did you mean 'lesbian?'" "Isn't that what this says?" lol. I'm sure I messed up these quotes, though)? Kurt really does have a pretty voice. What I'm wondering though, is where is the love for Artie, producers?
