Doctor Who | 1X14 'The Christmas Invasion'

My only issue was the exact one you mentioned - that we got this new Doctor, but he was asleep for most of the episode. I remember when I first saw this one, I was like, "Come on! Let's get to know the new guy!" I liked the taste of him that we got in this episode, though. He was funny and charming, and I like that he's trying to figure out what kind of man / Doctor he'll be in this body. "This hand's a fightin' hand!" Lol.

No problema! I snoozed, I losed.

Oh I agree I don't really eat much ham except during the holidays

Staton Chapman

I'm sorry Jim

Staton Chapman

Yes it definitely was

My family has turduken for the holidays and a honey pineapple ham. I'm not a big ham eater during the rest of the year, but something about the way they cook it is amazing.

TimeLord10

Travis, did you recognize the new doctor from something? I know you have seen him before on one of your other Patreon watch parties.

TimeLord10

I was waiting for it when he kept repeating it meant something. Just the look on his face at that moment was very Barty Crouch.

TimeLord10

Well. Staton stole my thunder. I was going to ask if you remembered David from HP & Goblet of Fire. 😒 But I quite agree about the subtitles: David was always the hardest to understand with his manic style.

JIM SCHMITZ

I'm always kinda impressed by that scene because Jackie is shouting out a ton of different things really fast. It was probably hard to get right lol

We have ham and turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I prefer ham tho but for my family both holidays the spread is basically the same. Alittle bit of everything

Staton Chapman

The whole time David was saying I need I need. I was just waiting for the barty Crouch tong flick lol

Such a great episode. The Christmas episodes, while also being important to the plot, are always great fun and very uplifting. A satsuma is just a variety of orange, they're just tiny oranges basically. And traditionally at Christmas time in Britain, kids will get a satsuma in their Christmas stocking along with gifts and sweets. No one really likes them lol, it's just a tradition. 😂 As for David, he's really great as The Doctor. You're right that he's funny. Christopher who's just gone had funny moments but he was more serious overall. Each regeneration is a reflection on the previous one. Christopher's Doctor was lonely and sad and closed off and his personality and appearance reflected that. But then Rose came along and gave him hope again and love. So this new regeneration with David is much lighter and more funny and also more emotional. And The Doctor's new look is for Rose. He finally feels comfortable enough to love her so his younger and more conventionally attractive appearance reflects that. I'm really excited to start watching season 2 with you in a week ish. I think you're going to really like it. 😊

i always love when the doctor regenerates in front of a companion because then one our first episode with a new doctor we're eased into it with the companion going through the same struggle we are, nervous if we'll like him and if he'll still be the same and we get to see little pieces of our old doctor still there at the same time rose does when she realizes it's gonna be ok. i think it's a special way to ease the viewer into it! also the best part of a regeneration episode is the wardrobe montages when he picks a new outfit that's always my favorite part of these episodes lol

Series really picks up from here. Many people consider this doctor (The 10th) to be the best. Obviously you don't have to agree, but I think you'llenjoy him. Really looking forward to more of your reactions.

Now you see why everyone says not to skip the Christmas Specials. They rarely end up being stand-alone episodes and often fit into, or drive the narrative of the show (not always, but often). This was a great opening episode for Tennant, although he is asleep for most of it, he really manages to assert himself as the Doctor in the short time we see him. A note on regeneration, every new Doctor reacts in a slightly different way, they don't all need to sleep. Sometimes they end up confused, unsure of who they really are, sometimes they just get up and get on with it like nothing happened. My head cannon is that it's tied into the way the previous Doctor "died." In this case he absorbed the time vortex and it killed every cell in his body. That's going to take a long time to recover from which is why he needed to sleep, so his cells could keep regenerating.

my favourite doctor, you have seen David Tennent before when you did Good Omens

OMG, "glowing sperm" I can't 🤣🤣🤣! Your little nuggets of commentary always kill me 🤣🤣🤣! I love that the Doctor is fair to all alien races, including humans. His compassion encompasses all life, which contrasts with PM Jones quite a bit. Her duplicity (and her underestimating the Doctor) cost her a lot! So, for me, it didn't take much to get used to David Tenant as the Doctor as I already knew about him from a different show (I won't say which one because I plan on requesting that show in the future ;) ). He's brilliant in that show in a different way to how he is brilliant in Doctor Who and I think you will enjoy his performance in that show ;)
