A 1950s cartoon is loaded with these literal depictions of idioms and old slang: https://www.flickr.com/photos/wardomatic/sets/72157603301340180/ Some are outdated, but many are still heard to this day. It even shows some early drawings with some gags that didn't make the cut, like the woman the man is dating being a "chain smoker".
