Living vicariously through photographers, you can imagine you’re behind the lens, giving instructions, or simply observing and recording the events that unfold before you. In this set, though—knowing that the Subversive photographer onsite was our protégé, assistant, second-lens, and model Skylar—you get to imagine what’s going through her mind, heart, and other organs as her photographic framing and focus decisions demonstrate clearly what, where, and how she sees in the amazing AbsCan.
In both of these Skylar-shot sets, you’re together with them in the abandoned barracks: an extraordinary model creatively collaborating with their photographer—before the two of them follow through with some distinctly personal contact in a subsequent set or two.
In this first set, we get an answer to “What lit the burners for these two?” We’d understand if you imagined that it started with the image-creating interest and interactions that arose during the posing and positioning you see here. What we haven’t concluded, though, is whether AbsCan, or Skylar, or both simultaneously suggested they create the more explicit of these images. Either way, it’s clear from the final five images that they both felt the effects of what began as (so far as this pair of sets shows) merely visual explorations. (And yes, we’ve thrown one of those evidentiary explicitries into the previews on the Crooked Container site.)
