“Sensory Play” can include a lot of things. Some of which, like paddles, clamps, sharps, and other implements of minor destruction, have a wonderful way of heightening the senses by elevating endorphins and other body chemistry. One result is a more intense enjoyment of the experience in which individuals, partners, or groups choose to engage. But it can also result in leaving temporary marks on a model, complicating subsequent photographers’ work in having to “shoot around” evidence of a previous episode.
This set shows that previous episode. The subsequent sets will follow shortly.
Here, though, we asked Girl Photographed (GP) to engage in some sensory play with the wax from three colored candles that had been created in lovely ceramic pitchers. These containers allowed her to build up a reservoir of hot wax to be poured where and how she chose. But she also found that the heat transferred to the ceramic provided some additional stimulation. And she also found it entertaining (and delicately painful) to play with the flame itself.
The interaction here is all individually engaged in by our friend and model, GP. Further sets…not so much. For now, though, we offer the opportunity to watch GP trickle, stream, and pour onto herself a molten palette of wonderfully colorful patterns. She leaves herself looking not unlike a Jackson Pollock painting. But digging your fingers into the layered surfaces of a painting would be wrong. Here? GP seems to enjoy herself quite well.
