Thinking of deleting the $1 tier

Pretty much this. The shitty economy is hitting all those $1 patrons as well, and that might be all they're able or willing to part with, in which case removing the $1 tier risks losing all those and getting nothing back. There are also people who have a lot of artists they want to support but are either unable or unwilling to pick and choose, so they spread $1 amounts around so the artists they like all get at least something.
