Posting on Patreon - a Poll

Hi!

Recently I got a few complaints that my patreon... kinda blows. And to be fair, I don't use it very much. It's more of a way for people to support me than anything else, but it's also my primary source of income so... I really don't have any excuse not to work on it some more.

Anyway! I don't post chapters on Patreon, mostly because this site sucks to post on, but I know some readers want to read on patreon anyway rather than go through the hassle of using the Index.

So, that's what this poll's about!

If you have other ideas, please share them in the comments!

As the Germans say, for me "Machts nichts". Do which ever way will make the most people among those that care, happier. For me, I just follow the index each month and bookmark it.

Natalie Holeman

I prefer the index. But, yeah, if people are complaining, and it's what pays the bills... 🤷🏼

Carlan Wray

I pretty much do what Kyle does. I have favorite stories I try to follow, but also just love contributing my small bit to your authorly support. If Patreon is your bread-winner, Patreon should stay, in whatever form.

Mary Pardo

I'm not good at keeping track of things, so my reading experience tends to be something like "Read everything currently on the index, wait awhile, go back to the index and try to figure out where I left off, read everything new on the index." I would appreciate at least announcements along the lines of "Fic Name - Chapter ## is up in the index." That would make things easier for me.

Kyle

I don't read the chapters in patreon, even for the other authors I support, but I would appreciate at least an announcement of the chapters being up here

Martin Boudrias

Depends on what you mean by best. Formatting-wise? Definately the Amazon releases. But in terms of how much I make? That's easily Patreon. It's like, 3/4ths of my monthly income.

RavensDagger

What would the best currently available way to read all theese works be, anyway?

Anti-No

I'm not sure. On one hand, I've definitely been falling behind further and more often since I started trying to follow patron-only chapters instead of what's on RR, because trying to read in the google docs kinda sucks. I'm pretty sure you've seen me "suggest changes" multiple times when I was just trying to scroll on my phone and the interface decided that finger motion meant something completely different. But on the other hand, reading on Patreon *also* kinda sucks since you need to scroll through the entire backlog of chapters for every single story every time you want to open a different chapter of the one you're currently progressing through, and it has the additional disadvantage of being a lot more work for the author. So I dunno if that would be any better.

Sindri

Thanks for caring!

Would it be possible to post when new chapters for various books are released? I don't mind the index system at all, but needing to scroll through it and open various links just to check if a new chapter has been added is definitely not ideal. I don't mind the current system, but there is definitely room for improvement. Getting a email update to remind me a story has been added too, would be more than enough in my opinion. I am going to withhold voting either way.

AgeOldCure

Although i would be happy to have chapters on patreon i'm also fine with the current method. I'd say go with whatever you prefer

hellunit

honestly maybe just an alert for when chapters are updated on the index would be better currently unless you check regularly it is you don't really know

jacob

I find the patreon kind of annoying to read anything other than the most recent chapters on but updates on what's new would be nice. I read everything that shows up on Royal Road actually

daniel riggle

Do what you wish! I'm mainly here to support and get the early chaps!

M0och

If you wanted to post only the new chapters going forward I think that is a fine option. I don't think anyone expects you to port over all your backlog. We just want you to keep writing!

Manlor

I'm just here to support your writing and get updates. I mainly read once it releases on kindle or listen to it as an audiobook.

natwalk

Also, I didn't join here in order to have a place to read. I paid here to support Ravensdagger so as to make sure more stories get written.

Jonathan Simon

I never have reason to look at the schedule for chapters, and I honestly forget to check the index very often, so I end up just coming back and finding the specific story docs on occasion when I remember? So while I do like *having* the index, honestly a notification for when chapters are finished would be... Appreciated 😅

Lucy Severine

There are Patreon alternatives that have better posting options. Honestly, I love being able to just download an epub of a book from Google. It's easier than using a userscript to rip epubs from Patreon, and the formatting is better too.

Jonathan Simon

I have been on your Patreon for a while. And I don't read any of the advance stuff. Because on my phone it isn't possible to track my progress in the middle of huge gdocs files. And in fact when I try to open the stories, the page is so big my phone wants to melt. I actually stopped reading Stray Cat Strut about a book ago because I had started reading the advance chapters, eventually lost my progress between reading sessions, and just gave up. But I know posting on Patreon is a pain so I don't hold this against you. I love Cyber Kitty!

Manlor

So… I don’t think it’s a terrible idea? But I think it would make more sense to just post chapter update links? Patreon is a nightmare to read on too. If I get interrupted mid way through a chapter the page reloads and I lose my place. So just being aware that you are posting something is nice, especially because I might miss a new story or see something interesting that I missed a while ago.

Ryune

Could use Delve's system where they post download links for the chapter. But i voted yes, my laptop reloads browsers, so if i don't have a tab up for a bit when i go to it, it reloads. I've lost my place trying to read the google docs often enough to give up. I read on royal road even while paying for patreon, just cause its easier

Alexis Lionel

I’m here so you can keep doing what you’re already doing on Royal Road, not for any Patreon specific goodies.

John Yewell

Either? Both? I'm fine with the Index, though I like the dark mode of patreon now.

White Neko Knight

I can’t say i like the index much, but i don’t think that patreon would offer a better solution. I don’t care about extra benefits, i just want to pay for my entertainment :)

Björn Marl

Hmm... more story or posts on Patreon? I'll take more story.

Jonathan Simon

If I do start posting, I'll just be the most recently written chapters, so a few fics will take a minute to catch up.

RavensDagger

Urgh, I was thinking posting would be easy. I have a friend that wouldn't mind doing the posting for me using Patreon's 'Teams' feature, but that would require giving Patreon 7% of my monthly income more than what they already take. And... that's not worth it.

RavensDagger

Just joined the other day with the hope of reading ahead a bit. Kinda disappointed after seeing how the index works.

Taedirk

I voted yes, but if Patreon is a real pain to work with, I don't mind the index if it keep things simpler for the author, all is good :)

Blue

While Google drive is kinda annoying at times, I like that I can download in my preferred format to read offline. Pat is really annoying to navigate for finding anything older than a couple days and relies on you to do all the work of making things available. I say stick with what you're doing.

William O'Driscoll

FWIW I find reading via the Index and Patreon both bothersome in their own way, but at least the Index lets us grab epubs of stuff.

ferthur

Gonna be honest, I fell of because the Index kept giving me issues, I've been catching up but chapters on Patreon would be nice, heck if Patreon sucks that much have you considered posting individual documents to Patreon for each chapter instead of directly to Patreon?
