My Favorite Handhelds of 2023

Hi everyone, thanks for your continued support!  Yesterday I released my annual "favorite handhelds of the year" video: https://youtu.be/fWrPCeFXv1s

2023 has been an amazing year for the channel and handheld community. I had a lot of fun testing out all the new devices that came to the market, and helping to share the fun of retro gaming in general.

I've got some plans for 2024, but I'm also interested to hear what you'd like to see from RGC in the coming year.  So if you have a moment, please let me know in the comments below any videos/posts ideas you have for next year.  My list of video ideas is very long, but I'll try my best to include your ideas in my work!

Thanks again for your support, I know this Patreon account is a little weird in that I don't have any real "perks" for members, I prefer to give everything I make to everyone all the time.  But just know that your contributions help fund my video projects and keep my website up and running, and that is truly awesome -- thank you so much!

Russ

It might be too niche, but I'd love to see your take on a WiiU guide emulation and virtual console injects.

RPi 5! Any handhelds you might learn about utilizing it!

Regarding content - I personally am very interested in reviews of handhelds and those „how to make this device perfect on the software side“ kind of videos you (I feel like) do less than now than you did earlier. What I am not interested about are those mini PCs, they are all the same to me because they differ mostly in specs and price, while handhelds differ in things you need to touch or see. So for handhelds you are my eyes and hands when I watch your videos, while for mini PCs this is not necessary. I hope I explained that in a plausible way 🙂

Hey Russ! As always: I don’t care for any perks, you do the retro gaming lords work on YT and your website, which is more than enough of a perk!

We’re looking to incorporate our Batocera/Raspberry Pi 4 rig into our home rec space (big screen tv). Although we know of some good controllers, we’re very interested in arcade stick style and wireless for everything else. Would love to see a way to have a home arcade/retro game system without a cabinet. Love the channel!

I actually took the dive into the Steam Deck OLED last night because of the video. I'm going to be selling my original Deck to cover most of the cost.

Hey Russ, I for one am glad there are no “perks”, per se. I can partially akin it to the current video game environment where the final products are often lacking content that is intended to be charged for. Essentially having to pay for the “complete” experience. I feel your system allows the most for everyone, which is admirable and appreciated. I have little as far as feedback regarding ideas for videos. If anything, your bit at the end regarding the RPG (should I buy it) is the single most decisive aspect of your videos for me sometimes and is appreciated when it is included. That could just be me. I don’t know if others mirror the sentiment. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Hey Russ, the work you do teaching us about these retro handhelds is awesome and far beyond any other YouTuber. That is “perk” enough. Would love to see some videos on preparing these handhelds for sale or giveaway. Specifics on how to remove a Google account, clear data, and anything else to get it back to factory. These things are going to keep coming and we will probably want to sell off our old models. With all of the different firmware versions, there doesn’t seem to be a lot consistency in the process.
