The White Sox really did throw the World Series in 1919. It is referred to as the Black Sox scandal. A movie about it called Eight Men Out came out a year before Field of Dreams. It's good, but I'm not sure if non-baseball fans would like it. John Cusack is really good in it. D. B. Sweeney plays Shoeless Joe, and it is a very different character to Ray Liotta's Joe. Ray Liotta completely ignores the fact that he was from South Carolina, and he definitely had a Southern accent. Fine with me because it's still an excellent performance. Another interesting fact: In the book, the author was J.D. Salinger. He threatened to sue if they used him as a character in the movie, so Terrence Mann was invented as a replacement. Also, there has never been an official confirmation of who did "the Voice." The author of the book was told that it was Ed Harris, who is married to Amy Madigan, the actress who played Annie.

Some fun facts/trivia: In the book "Shoeless Joe", the Terrence Mann character is actual (then-living) reclusive American author JD Salinger, who wrote Catcher in the Rye. Salinger -- who was intensely private -- was not amused, and his lawyers hit JP Kinsella with a letter telling him that they'd let THIS one go, but any other use of Salinger's name in anything based off the book would result in legal action. When Ray says in the movie that Terrence Mann used his father's name as a character in a story, in the book what actually happens is that Ray Kinsella (who shares a surname with WP Kinsella, who wrote it) notices that there is a JD Salinger story with a character named Ray Kinsella. Which is actually the case. (It's one of Salinger's short stories.) Also, apparently teenagers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are extras in the stands during the Fenway Park scene.
