I actually like this episode a fair bit. At least the idea of it. Less of a spaghetti and wall motif that we are subjected to a lot of the time. I think it's probably one of the more well-executed episodes of this series and era. The writing is certainly more coherent and cohesive. It does the job in telling one story in the time of the partition. Aliens or no aliens.... I'd go on the side of their inclusion, more so as I just liked the concept. They are probably the most removable element and so that's the obvious flaw in the construction of the narrative. But that falls in the category of, reasons decisions are made during this era. The scattergun approach of ideas doesn't feel in play here. So I welcomed a more straightforward, to-the-point approach. This pips ahead of Rosa in my estimations, simply because the monster of the week feels a smidgen more thought out. They do have in common, that they are quite unnecessary elements that can be lifted out, maybe to make a better television drama. But this one feels less like I've been clonked on the head with a dose of lazy writing ideas. 16/20

I think Demons of Punjab is one of the most beautiful episodes in series 11, and throughout her era, it’s always been a fave of mine. (I was more surprised you guys really liked Trusanga, but everyone has different POVs) I love that it does tell a part of history within a contained story through Yaz’s family because, in reality, so many small family moments were disrupted when the Partition happened. And I love that we got to learn a bit more about Yaz and her family’s story.

2023-02-25 05:30:57 +0000 UTCAlso the way I see it with regards to the whole interrupting the timeline in this episode, I see it that this was always what happened, the Doctor always went back with Yaz and it’s a set point hence the lack of time reapers. The reason I think that is because at the beginning the grandmother says to Yaz I will tell you when you are older (Yaz still asks about the watch meaning she hasn’t been there yet hence why the grandmother doesn’t tell her so she can experience it for herself) and at the end she sees the henna tattoo from the wedding and Yaz no longer asks about the story so the grandmother knows that she has been back in time to the events of the episode and can talk about what happened with her (it’s also probably why she calls Yaz her favourite grandchild) it just means that the grandmother had to keep it a secret until that moment as if she hadn’t it might have screwed up the timeline

2023-02-25 00:21:17 +0000 UTCI agree with the criticism too but I also understand why they included them, because undoubtedly if you had not included aliens in it and kept it purely historical you would have a section of the fan base upset and annoyed by the lack of inclusion but similarly if you did include it then you would have people upset too and that’s what happened as it is a criticism that comes up with this episode when discussed online at least from what I’ve seen. It’s the same as a certain episode in season 12 because again that could have been purely historical and it would have been great but for me the inclusion of the aliens actually Mars that episode.

2023-02-25 00:15:00 +0000 UTCI'm sorry you guys didn't enjoy the episode more! I totally get why you guys feel that way. I personally adore this episode (one of the few from Chibnall's run I do) but I get the qualms. I wish there weren't any enemies in this.
