I like this episode a lot. What more did the viewer need? We got Jensen Ackles great acting interacting with a bad ass character whose actress was damn good in what the writers wanted her character to be along with a compelling WWII story that tells a really great submarine story of dread. There are scenes within the episode where I felt anxiety over the basic things someone serving on a submarine in the Navy at that time experienced on a daily basis. The episode highlights submariners and vets of that generation were built different than you or I will ever be. The reveal of Lucifer to the Winchester brothers was also a chef's kiss.
"The Vessel" could have been a movie. imo, this episode is one of the better directed episodes of the series.

I really enjoyed this one, despite the fact that not much happens (other than the boys now realize Lucifer is loose and inhabiting Jimmy's body).

I really loved the heroism of the crew of the sub, which felt like WWII beliefs. They had no qualms or fears knowing they are going to their deaths. John really explains it well. And they didn't change the past, thereby affecting the future (ala Balthazar saving the Titanic).

ETA, just saaw the finale to The Winchesters and it really does wrap things up nicely and brings the final season full circle. But I don't recommend seeing it until after you finish the series, as it has a ton of spoilers for S11 E20 and on.

I'm not sure if you remember but Cas has time travelled in previous episodes. The first when Dean saw his mom and dad back when they were young, then another time when they have to go back and save their parents from being killed from Anna the angel, or when they went back to the wild west to get the phoenix ash to kill Eve as well as the Elliot Ness episode. So it wasn't a new concept :)
