I love Alan Cummings ever since I watched him play Loki in Son of The Mask xD This episode unfortunately bored me overall and Jodie's Doctor so far just never jelled with me. The third act takes the episode way down for me which is surprising because I overall enjoy when the sci-fi aspects come into fruition, but here it felt too forced. But that's just me!

This one isn't 'all that bad' and probably is undeserving of that low rating it's been collectively issued. I've phrased it like that, as some of the deficiencies of this run are still in place. The guest actors completely outshine half - three-quarters of the main cast, like so many have done the majority of this series so far. Let's move on. I like the story plenty and there is a fair bit to enjoy in this one. I quite like it in fairness. The facts do provide significant illumination of the flaws in the writing and presentation, however. But I won't hold that against it. Greg makes a good analysis of the week-for-week viewing experience against watching once this era has ended. While I do believe that a large amount of the passionate opposition to this part of the show is collectively distorting and often unbalanced and occasionally unfair. It came from a time when the episode ratings and collective appreciation had some of us really worried that this would eventually mark the 2nd cancellation of the show. I've always believed the representative argument that gets labelled on this run, although commercially important for attracting the next young generation, was simply just not enough. The show didn't become terrible but just mediocre. My criticisms have always been attached to issues that have very little to do with the W word. I'll credit John too, for trying to reason out the approach, in relation to this Doctor. Unfortunately, your understanding and misremembering of past points of the show dismantles your theory a little. The generation cycle question was handled 4 series ago at the end of 11's run. 12 was, in fact, the beginning of the new given regeneration cycle. That's what the dialogue certainly suggested if this writer cares about the established lineage of the series and wants things to make sense. This makes 13 the 2nd of this new cycle. This point crosses two different showrunners and defining approaches. But I'll concede that comparisons can be made for 1 and 12 and 2 and 13. But as you've not seen classic, that wasn't a factor you were considering, as I understand it. This part of the show is a noticeable attempt to bring back aspects of Classic Who, but packaged for a modern audience. I think that has a little more to do with it. The debate can be had on the effectiveness of the decisions that are made and how they relate to good storytelling, comparable writing styles and how we evaluate this point of the show as a whole. There's always been highs and lows. But do the highs do an efficient job of making up for the low points.
