The researcher in the ep was also a guest character actor on SPN. He was in the Lily Dale episode as the spoon bender (the one that got killed by his own utensils.)

I just listened to an episode of the Psych podcast where they joke about how none of them are famous enough now to have landed a guest spot on the show haha. I think that Gus telling them was good! Shawn felt like they were running out of time but Gus let him keep that agency of choice. I feel like if Shawn had told Juliet his feelings at the time it could have wound up being a question of motivation due to the circumstances - very similar to Gus's relationship a few episodes back, where they weren't sure if it was real attraction or just the heat of the moment type thing.
