The best part about this episode is the song "Little Black Submarine" and the fact that Violet is the wife of Chronos (the same actress).
Edit: I love how Sam and Dean look so normal in this whole other genre sorta vibe... It's comical.

I can't stand that they tried to make werewolves hierarchical and misogynistic.

I completely agree that this can be a comical episode, but I do also think some people forget that there are a lot of supernatural episodes where if you are not buying into the world, it can be comical. From around season 7 on I had started to question Singer's directing choices for sure though.

This episode was forced onto Dabb and Singer by the Network. I remember when enough time had passed and they, and Jared and Jensen, could talk a little openly about it. Which I believe was Season 12/13. The Network heads basically gave them an ultimatum to do it or have their budget cut. Instead of creating something true to the world of Supernatural the Network wanted something similar to The Originals. Dabb and Singer “delivered.” Jensen Ackles expressed his dislike of the episode at a convention saying, “Talk about a square peg in a round hole.” Jared also agreed with the sentiment.

I love and look forward to your reactions but I just cannot bring myself to watch this episode again. Just can’t do it. This is the only one that I can’t rewatch. Sorry you had to watch it.

I just want to apologize for this........travesty. I don't know what they were thinking or not thinking or, they wanted to do something different. Expand the SPN universe. I think the bare bones of the premise could have been fashioned into something worth watching. They just made every wrong turn possible and kept on going until they hurtled over the cliff and burst into flames. Plain and simple, this is garbage. If I could persuade one single reactor to toss this episode aside and move on I would celebrate my victory. I love SPN and I'm not going to apologize for that or try to explain myself and now that you have this piece of....whatever, to hold up in comparison, even your least liked episodes from before move a little higher up the ladder by default, right? 😝

Yeah That one works much better, and they could still do it even though the show ended they wouldn't have to change too much.

Ugh look. it doesn't really matter anymore, it's done, we've moved on! It's not like it's one of my favorite eps or anything, but I can kind of see what they tried, they tried to appeal to The CW, not to the audience, that's the first mistake, they tried to sell a adult soap opera to a historically drama/soap opera-y channel, and look soaps are not for eveybody! I like some soap dramas, and they usually rely on stuff like romeo+juliet, stuck up rich folks, family feuds, antiquated life decisions, etc., it is their own genre and you have to understand the genre and not go with the mentality of a action/drama show. Which brings me to my last point and why I feel the need to defend this, yes it would've work better if they sold it as a stand alone pilot, and not backdoor this "chees fest" into a show of "monster killing, stakes, and beers", and let's be honest, SPN is no high brow drama either, don't get me wrong, I love SPN! it's a more character based show which is my prefered type a show, but it's a show full of it's own cheesiness, amateur hour, and "wtf were they thinking" moments (especially in the latter seasons), but don't act like this ep was so bad compared to this master show that we watch, like S1 wasn't that much different of a "amateur" style of show, or surten season finales.
All I'm trying to say is that it's not perfect, SPN isn't either, but you have to judge it by the genre rules, much like many consider superhero movies "silly" or "theme park rides" because they're used to the more dramatic style films and they judge it by those rules.

I feel bad you guys watched this but find a slight silver lining that you were at least warned. Some of us were blindsided by this train wreck.

We tried to warn you lol. You could see Greg's disbelief that it could be this bad as he went through the episode.
There is an attempt later for a different kind of backdoor pilot that works way better than this but i won't spoil the premise.

So this episode was supposed to be a spin-off episode, but it was just so forced. If they had just done a regular pilot for a new show, it might have worked. The show was definitely not going to work with Supernatural fans.

Dabb's writing. That is something that continues to baffle me to this day how he continued having a job. Especially in the seasons I still won't watch.

So sorry! This episode is the worst one of the entire series. So much is wrong with it. The premise. The Writing. The Directing. The acting. The overall storytelling. And it doesn't fit within the world we know either. No way hunters wouldn't have knows there was a monster mafia in Chicago.
This highlights the worst elements in both Dabb's writing and Robert Singer's directing. They brought their F game to this. Their weaknesses where fully showing here. I think they've gotten lazy over the years.
