Yes the opening shot gave a headsup that stuff was going to go down, but emotionally it was more about showing Baby -- the toy soldier, the lego blocks, and the S.W. & D.W. -- and the blood and damage showed the peril to Baby as much as to Dean. I feel that "Oh, Baby, what did they do to you?" was really the important emotional connection to start the episode on.

Truly one of my favorite tv episodes, period! It was near perfection. The way they really allowed Baby to shine, the shots, the humor, the heart. I agree the only question was whether the opening was necessary, but small complaint. Robbie Thompson, who wrote the episode, is my favorite writer on SPN. Him and Bobo Berens. I love the intimacy of the episode. It was great to finally get some of those quiet, brotherly moments. We haven't really gotten them, apart from flashbacks, since season 1. Not this lived in. It was beautifully contained, but still had connections to the overall plot of the season.
Fun facts I enjoy are the fact that in the car scene where Dean is teasing Sam they seemed to slip in and out of Dean and Sam and Jensen and Jared as they filmed. They just had so much fun with it. Most of it was still usable, because the bond is there either way, and by now they embody so much of the characters.
Jensen learned that turn on his lunch break, because he was determined to do it.

John you killed me with the baby t-shirt slow pan in. I love this episode on elf the best in the entire series. It was so unique. I think the magic came in the form of the boring moments that are never shown in media. They were just talking snippets and seems so everyday. For me, that's what made it so beautiful. It was so intimately shot, and personal. Baby was realized as an actual character. The way they were able to give this such a great perspective. It felt so real. When this episode it definitely was stuck in the forefront of my mind for the next few months. Night moves was played so many times that year. If I'm not mistaken this is one of the highest rated episodes. I'm curious to know if they anticipated this episode to be a hit or just wanted to create something different. Best wishes for your ceremony Greg. Happy holidays and I'll see you both next year if not sooner!
