Process Post - Charon / Female Lone Wanderer [Fallout 3]

Some insight into my process from last month‘s Charon set! Some split screen detail shots as always, a progression from thumbnail to final, and also a side by side comparison with an old piece from last year!

More on that last part: I didn’t set out to intentionally remake an older piece, but when I realized how similar the idea was, I just decided to lean in, and I’m glad that I did! Comparing my current approach to what I did in summer of 2022 gave me a lot of perspective on my art journey, especially re: use of value and color.

When I look at those pieces side by side, I see myself getting more and more comfortable with an wider value range, as well as a less homogenous use of color. I also think one of my biggest areas of progress over the last year has been reconciling my obsession with lineart with my desire to make more “rendered” pieces. I wanted to move away from cel shading in favor of more complex lighting situations, but opting for a fully “painterly” style without visible lines just didn’t feel right to me. You can sort of see me trying to integrate chunky/sometimes blended lines into the 2022 piece, and while I don’t think it’s BAD, looking back I just don’t think it was ultimately achieving the look I was aiming for.

To be honest, the last year was a bit of an awkward growth period for me! But I think I’ve finally settled into an approach that combines several aesthetics I enjoy in a way that‘s satisfying to me (and also gives me room to grow without constantly changing my technique, thank god). And it’s nice to know what to expect out of my process and see some consistent results.

Ahh so glad you enjoyed seeing my progress 🥰 And to answer your question sort of long-windedly: Procreate's layer limit decreases with canvas size, so when I work with a large canvas it caps me around 35-40 layers. But I tend to flatten things as I work to get around the limit, so my actual total in a piece is higher (I might use 7 layers to create a background, but then flatten it and work on top of a single background layer etc). I'd say I average around 50 layers for a piece! Re: brushes, I use mostly Jingsketch's Complete Collection (available on Gumroad). I use the square sketch brush for my initial drawing, a pencil brush for the cleaner lines, and I tend to stick to a sharp edge square painting brush + soft round brush for rendering. But I use a TON of the Procreate default texture brushes for grime/fabric/skin/etc too! Also I abuse the hell out of the Procreate lens flare brush lol. It makes things sparkly 😆

That's so awesome! I hope that these peeks into my process are useful to you! 🙂 Maybe sometime soon I can run through my general steps on here in a bit more detail! I'm a little hesitant to make a straight up coloring tutorial since I'm still very much learning myself, but I'm always happy to share more about how I work/my decision making process, etc!

Whoa! The difference is like night and day from the previous version to now. I’m so fascinated by others artistic growth and how they come to change their style over time, and how insane so little has passed in comparison to your pieces! I do have a question. How many layers do you typically use, and what/how many sort of different brushes? 😝

As someone who is just dipping his toes into digital colouring it's always good to get some insight / pointers.
