Spear Devil - 031

Chapter 031 – Innate Trait

[April – 2008]

I was awakened from my trance by the sound of the bells ringing, which also caused me to notice the half-a-dozen teenage girls peeking into the music room by the door, though they fled the moment they saw me looking at them.

Still, I was pretty sure I saw at least two of them filming me with their phones.

Sighing to myself, I put away my violin and grabbed my school bag and the spears, though I realized that I really wasn't in the mood to spend another two hours in class after the debacle with Sona.

Deciding that I couldn't care less about perfect attendance, I just went to the ground floor and left the school, walking home relaxedly as I enjoyed the soft spring breeze and warm sunlight caressing my face.

Once at home, I went to my room and just dumped my school bag on the floor before carefully laying down my violin and the large wooden box containing the spears on my bed.

Opening the three clasps on the wooden box, I decided to just absorb them with my Demonic Spear as there was no reason to delay this any longer than necessary.

Lifting up the top, I was greeted by the sight of three well-crafted spears, with two of them looking very similar while being made from seemingly normal steel, though they gave me a feeling that I could only describe as 'pure' and 'untainted', their magical signature standing in stark contrast to what I had felt when around Rias, Sona, and their peerage members.

They had most likely been blessed by a priest, Angel, or Fallen, which meant that they were enchanted with the Holy Attribute, which was rather useful for me.

The last one though was made out of a brighter silvery metal with the blade of the spear almost glowing, making me believe that this weapon was of the light attribute by the virtue of the materials used in making it.

Touching them, I could practically feel the Demonic Spear inside me hum in joy, its hunger for the three spears apparent. So I just gave in to my bonded weapon's desire and activated Weapon Absorption while touching the different spears all at once.

Tendrils of endless darkness sprouted from my palms only a moment later, quickly attaching themself to the spears and covering them whole before devouring them in form and essence, granting me their inherent powers.

[You have successfully absorbed the Holy Spear(Common). You have gained an Affinity to the Holy Attribute[1/10].]

[You have successfully absorbed the Holy Spear(Common). You have gained an Affinity to the Holy Attribute[1/10]. This type of weapon has already been consumed, gains changed to 0.1 Free Attribute Points. Further consumption of the same weapon will yield no gains.]

[You have successfully absorbed the Light Spear(Common). You have gained an Affinity to the Light Attribute[1/10].]

[Congratulations! You have absorbed a Common-rank weapon for the first time that was not a system reward. For this achievement, you are rewarded with one Free Attribute Point.]

I wasn't too surprised that my gains were greatly reduced and would even be completely removed when absorbing the same type of weapon in the future again, as it would otherwise be too great a loophole in the system for me to exploit.

The Free Attribute Point reward though was greatly appreciated as I had already realized their importance when it came to my Skills, Affinities, and Resistances.

Still, now that I had already started, I just went and accepted my task rewards from before, which caused a matte brown spear to appear in my right hand that seemed somewhat dull, while another notification popped up in my mind, asking me to choose what kind of resistance the Resistance Spear should be enchanted with.

The choices varied greatly from [Holy], [Light], and [Poison] resistance, to even [Darkness], [Illusion], and [Magic] resistance. And while many of those options seemed very appealing to me, I knew that since I planned to become a Devil, [Holy] and [Light] resistance were the most important for now.

It was very hard to gain resistances by using normal Weapon Absorption, as I would have to make sure the weapons had been enchanted with such a resistance, which was rather uncommon. It was more likely that I would have to specifically order those kinds of weapons in the future.

The Strengthening Path of Spirit Absorption was clearly a much more direct way to gain resistances as I could just absorb life forms with specific resistances, though with only one Path-Changing Ticket left I couldn't just squander it like this.

For the same reason, I had not tried to use the ticket to enable me to absorb a Golden Tear to permanently gain enhanced learning capabilities. These tickets were rare and I had to carefully consider what to use them on, and since I had quite a few Golden Tears left, I didn't have to make a decision for the time being.

And while those other resistances seemed very attractive, they weren't a priority at the moment.

Picking the [Light] resistance first as it was a method of attack that both Angels and Fallen used and would therefore provide broader coverage, a completely white spear appeared in my left hand the next moment, intricate runes carved onto the shaft.

Once again letting go of the Demonic Spear's hunger, I watched on as both weapons were quickly consumed by tendrils of darkness, their essence strengthening the Demonic Spear and myself.

[You have successfully absorbed the Spear of Resistance(Light)(Uncommon). You have gained a Resistance to the Light Attribute[2/10].]

[You have successfully absorbed the Durable Spear(Uncommon). You have gained the skill Reinforcement[2/10].]

[Reinforcement[2/10]: An active skill that allows the user to enhance his durability greatly for a short period of time by infusing his physical body with energy.]

I was a bit surprised at the skill I had gained, as I was already capable of enhancing my physical performance by infusing my body with Dragon Aura, though I knew that while this indeed greatly enhanced my strength and speed, it only lightly raised my durability, so the skill would definitely prove itself useful.

Looking over my Status, I decided to use a Free Attribute Point after having saved up more than ten already. Focusing my mind, I gave a mental command to add the point to my Fire Resistance as a test to see if something would change once one type of resistance has reached the maximum level.

Though I was surprised as I felt an immense amount of heat welling up inside of me immediately after I added the Free Attribute Point, every cell in my body and every drop of blood in my veins feeling as if cooked and boiled while I was fully conscious.

It felt as if my whole body was smelted and tempered by blazing flames that originated from within me.

Thankfully this sensation didn't last for more than a dozen or so seconds while my Soul Fortress made me much less susceptible to physical and mental pain. The system messages I received also caused me to forget about this momentary pain quickly.

[Fire Resistance has reached level 10. Fire Resistance has evolved into the Innate Trait [Unburnt].]

[Unburnt: You are a Child of Fire, no flame in existence can cause you harm. This includes magical, spiritual, and even divine flames. You will forever be unburnt.]

[Congratulations! For the first time, one of your resistances has reached level 10 and evolved into an Innate Trait. You are rewarded with five Free Attribute Points.]

Seeing as upgrading my Fire Resistance had obviously been worth it, I knew that this was definitely the way to go with my other resistances, especially the Dragon Slaying Resistance as I needed to eliminate my very obvious racial weakness.

Still, I didn't try to level up my Fire Affinity at this point even though it was tempting, as I had a faint premonition that I wouldn't like the result of that. Even now I couldn't control Ddraig's most powerful flames which were definitely his most destructive powers, able to burn even the souls of Gods and Devils alike.

Upgrading my flames without having any control over them was foolish at best and suicidal at worst, and I wanted to be neither.

For the moment, I decided to not use up any more Free Attribute Points, as I couldn't be sure that I wouldn't need them in the near future, they could massively increase my power in a time of need after all.

Setting aside the now empty wooden box, I prepared to go out and get some fresh air, so I changed into some more casual clothes, took my violin case, and left the house once again, leisurely walking towards the nearby park which, if I remembered correctly, was the place where Issei had been killed by Raynare in the original timeline.

Comments

I think it will be an upgrade since from what I understand, currently he’s half human and half dragon, I think if he reincarnates as a devil he will be a half devil half dragon and since devils are inherently around 10 times stronger than humans, his base stats would also increase 10 times, not sure if any of this is accurate, just my thoughts

Thanks! Love the story!

Very nice, looking forward to more soon! To me becoming a devil don't seem worth it.. seems like a downgrade to me from a dragon.
