FIRST TIME WATCHING: The Haunting of Hill House S1E1!!

Comments

From the first time I've watched this episode and even today, that ending scene never really scared me, it just made me feel sad. A lot of this show has well done scares, but sooo much sadness. I come from a big family, so I couldn't help but put myself in these characters shoes. Mike Flanagan is a genius, I do hope you watch more of his series, especially Midnight Mass, that show was just incredible.

Noctis

Another comment. During the opening title you said the music was really pretty, and it reminded me of a video I saw on youtube by the fantastic Jacob Geller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aFfN4HtjEc It's called "Why do horror games sound so beautiful" He is great. I think another video he did on the golem was probably his best. And "roads without people". And the one he did about the game about the house that hates you, anatomy I think. Golem - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUBVSH6hBvY Roads - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBBuoD9eL5k House - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mexs39y0Imw The house one is pretty much about haunted houses in general. All his vids are great, the Museum Theft one is so good, paired with Who's afraid of Modern Art... I got off topic. but yeah, check him out.

Cory Silver

Man, only a few days and so many comments. So, I just watched Episode 1 and 2 of Hill house, like, within the last few hours. I'm watching the show as "homework" because we're going to Halloween Horror Nights on the 15th. The first episode I thought was boring, the second was better though. As I write this you've seen more than me of the show. But let's look at American Horror Story. I'm trying to think of the most "Fun" seasons. I'm not sure how good season 1 is as a starting point. I think Season 2 is pretty damn strong. Season 1 is just about a haunted house. Season 2 is about an insane asylum, and that is a really cool setting. Season 3 is probably the least scary, it's about a witched Coven, from the point of view of the witches. Season 4 was the Carnival one, I think. This one has mixed feelings, but I enjoyed it. It's all over the place, you can't really predict where it's going. Season 5 was Hotel, which was a personal favorite of mine. Season 6 was Roanoke, which had a very cool thing about it that makes it different from all the other seasons. Season 7 and 8 were, less liked. Cult had some cool elements. Apocalypse was pretty critically panned. Season 9 "1984" was awesome in my book. A real return to form, with the 80's summer camp theme. Season 10 I haven't watched yet. So, I say Look at Season 2, 3, 4, 5, and 9. Then after those go back and watch the others. I can say after watching most of the seasons that AHS is less about scary, and more about the fun of being scared. There is so much humor, so many good actors, so many plot twists, and the show can change drastically from episode to episode. There are basically no rules so anything can happen. Someone you hated can be someone you love, and the other way too. The show isn't afraid to end, mid season, and then just start up again in the next episode, continuing the story, but decades later. So do consider it, just don't feel you have to start with season 1, they really are not connected at all, except for a few Easter Egg type things. Like for example, one of the witches from season 3, shows up to the hotel in season 5. If you never saw season 3, oh well. Season 5 still works on it's own.

Cory Silver

Okay I'm hooked. What a good show, loving the suspense and horror at the same time.

Brian Stanton

Episode 6 is maybe the best episode of any show I've ever seen. Its pure quality filmmaking.

Sebastian Syrinx

Just starting Midnight Mass, wowwww

Nic Benham

Aww Nat I know you’re scared to bits, but stick with this one, it’s really good. Mike Flanagan (the show’s creator, director and writer) is a master of modern horror. He came onto the scene after years of horror films full of nothing but the cheap kinda jumpscares (e.g. Friends scaring each other and laughing, a cat or bird darting into the shot etc.) and brought the genre back to where it’s best. His films deliver the scares and the horror by showing how the frightening stuff affects the characters, which for me can often be far more scary than any ghost or spirit or malevolent demon, or if the scares do come from something directly scary, then he lingers on it and builds up that much needed tension and suspense.

Jack Mellor

Hey ! Did you spot E.T. on the lunch box next to young Luke at the tree house scene ? It is a nice easter egg. Guess which actor was playing E.T.'s little friend ...

2D AsherR

Well, to each their own.

G. T. Blackwell

What's the schedule for this show? One ep. a week? I don't think I can wait a week!!

Gerald Corona

I wouldn't call Martyrs (2008) "inherently comical". Unless you consider all movies with a twist comical.

Gerald Corona

Well this show is not for me. I think if it were close to the book I would watch. I hope you do not have to many nightmares Natalie.

Garrick Smalley

Ohhhh yess! In ep. 1, I had to pause and it was right at Natalie's reaction to Nell dancing with no one in the house. Nat's face, frozen, was a sight to see!! Lmao

Gerald Corona

TBR Schmitt. Husband and wife reacting. Cool people with some good action movies and classics under their belt. The wife, Samantha, cringes and covers her eyes a lot! Lmao! They've posted up to ep. 3 for this series.

Gerald Corona

Don't even really need symbolism to figure it out.... The shoddy old age makeup gives away the direction of the show from episode one.

Brian Jones

Wow. Looked like you almost pulled a muscle cringing there, Natalie! Please don't hurt yourself. Remember that it's all happening on THE OTHER SIDE of the screen!

Alan Kobb

Big agree! I fully support this suggestion!

Logan Kerlee

My friend, I'm a seasoned horror FANATIC; this show is a case study in frights and suspense. You're not a b*tch. These people are just good at terrifying the audience.

Cody Steele

Who's the other reactor? :/

Logan Kerlee

I stopped halfway through. I stopped because I'm a coward and because it was 5:30am. I've decided that I'll be watching this show during daylight hours.

Logan Kerlee

xD I may decide to do that.

Logan Kerlee

Nope, nope, nope, nope... I'm straight TERRIFIED right now. Holy fuck, this show is SCARY! LUL I'm a little bitch, I don't care. This scares the fuck out of me. Though, watching this at 5am in a pitch black bedroom prolly isn't the wisest choice. I'm going to watch the rest of this sometime later on during the day. If I can make through the episode, that's how I'll do it from now on.. because this show is giant bag of fuck no. xD Stopping at 39:13 in the YouTube video.

Logan Kerlee

I really like Bly Manor although I think they could have cut down the origin story a bit. Midnight Mass was great for me *because* it was a bit predictable. In the first episode there was a specific scene where I saw it and thought, "oh they're doing *spoiler*" and they were. But how it played out, and specifically how they linked it to religion, was, for me, very effective.

Paul Mason

I agree its scary but the story is amazing so 100% worth the watch

jake western

it's as predictable as The Da Vinci Code is, IF you know and understand the symbolism throughout..

Mister Lou

Bly Manor isn't bad, just different. It's a love story more than anything. Midnight Mass on the other hand, is a bit of a muddled mess. Solid concept, but sadly it had horrible execution, and unfortunately it was extremely predictable.

Brian Jones

Bly Manor has a lot of haters but I absolutely love it! also Midnight Mass is FANTASTIC!

Mister Lou

people should have started you with Bly Manor, its much less scary. this show might break you.

Vincent Valentin

Midnight Mass is a bit of a mess.... Solid concept, horrible execution, and extremely predictable.

Brian Jones

Really just waiting for episode 6. One of the best pieces of entertainment I've seen.

Molecule

I did not think Bly Manor was nearly as good as Hill House, no rush to get to that imo Hill House is so masterful with its suspense. Like when they held on a hallway and it was terrifying.

Wilhelm Keidel

Oh cool, this is a great series.

Rick Runge

Natalie! The Book of Boba Fett starts in December. Remember they teased it at the end of Mandalorian. Any plans to watch it?

Joe Blankenship

Yes! So excited to see what you think of this show!

Luis R.

I hope you do Bly Manor as well. It’s so good. And I don’t just mean as horror. It’s a beautifully crafted story.

Thanks for sacrificing your sanity for us, Nat! This show is definitely worth it, hopefully the quality of the story will make the scary parts worthwhile for you :)

crawlie

I would love to see you revisit your pre-conversation here as soon as you finish this show. Ten hours you can't get back? Some of the top 10 hours of television you will experience :P.

Bryce Hatley

Season 2 is great, it is an anthology series, a lot of same actors but different unrelated story. Don’t believe it’s as scary as season 1

Alex B

See, this is why I voted for What We Do in the Shadows. I find the horror genre inherently comical, usually unintentionally. So I tend to gravitate toward the content that leans into the camp, like WWDITS or Cabin in the Woods. This is going to be tedious.

G. T. Blackwell

Perhaps you could get your Beau to sit in the room with you so you don't freak so much?

PickettsChargingPort

Just wanted to let you know Nat that these types of shows/movies make it hard for me to fall asleep too, but I am going to watch along in solidarity. You don’t have to sacrifice alone!

Travis

Oh hey, that is Dario Naharis. I couldn't place him either. But yeah, I liked that first episode. It's got me hooked in. Hopefully I don't have to turn down the iPad too much because somebody on there's going "I don't want it I don't want it I don't want it" too much, hahaha.

Joe Blankenship

This is going to be great. I love this show. I am not the biggest fan of jump scares either, but the story is so good and it's so well done that it's worth all of them.

Ben Violette

Natalie, after the Natmares season, or if you get spooked out and want to take a break with a comedy, I have to recommend Beverly Hills Cop. Eddie Murphy at his absolute peak.

Greg McDaniel

I love it when people who hate horror decide to watch horror. In my opinion The Haunting of HIll House is the best of the best. Looking forward to episode 2 >:)

Megatto

Everybody who has watched Hill House is waiting for Natalie to react to THAT scene , right ? You know the scene I'm talking about. Surely I'm not the only one...

Rime Pendragon

Because it was adapted from one.

Dooly

And I’m most familiar with Timothy Dutton, the older father, from the tv show Leverage

Ben Wheeler

You can do it, Natalie!!!

Byron

What ? I like Bly Manor more than Hill House... I guess people expected the same mood as Hill House. Bly Manor really reminded me of Victorian ghost stories.

Rime Pendragon

She will like this, Hill House is also lots of great character moments and drama with some good scares. This should be great

Obie Brown

When I have multiple reactors watching the same show I usually go episode by episode. Especially with this show, I have no problem watching each episode more than once back to back lol

Dante

Good reactors are a rare breed, who is the other one if I might ask?

Obie Brown

OH, HI, LUKE!!

Dave M.

Natalie is one of only two Reaction creators I support. And I'm so excited they BOTH are watching this series right now!! But how do I handle this? Do I watch it all the way through with one, then start over with the other? Or each episode twice? Or each episode once while playing BOTH reactions together?? Any suggestions??

Gerald Corona

Yeah t bummed me out, I was really looking forward to it.

David Spriggs

Why the change of atmosphere, Natalie? Did you move???

Dave M.

Speaking of actors in the show and seeing them in others you recently watched, Julian Hilliard (young Luke) also played one of Wanda's kids in Wandavision (the one who could cast magic).

Jomero

I think I slightly prefer Bly Manor, but not by much.

PickettsChargingPort

Both this and Bly Manor are so so good. Utilizes horror in a way that ties perfectly into the characters, and there are a lot of layers to the story. Plus the acting and directing is phenomenal. Really looking forward to seeing what you think.

cosmotron

My advice is to ignore this poster. Bly manor was fantastic (though you dont need to watch it during Halloween because the scare factor is very low).

Nimo-the-Red

This is such a good show. I hope you can get past the jump scares because this really is a great story!

john collins

This is an excellent show. I say that as someone who doesn't really like horror, or ghost stories particularly. But the story it tells and the character relationships are great. That said, if you really hate jump scares as much as you say, maybe you shouldn't put yourself through it.

Paul Mason

What I love about this series is how it's not purely a horror show. It's a family drama using the ghost story format to talk about complex family dynamics, and mental health. How we deal with trauma. There's plenty of jump scares and feelings of dread. But each episode will have plenty of pure family moments to distract. For better or worse. Plus just noticed on this rewatch. In the treehouse. Luke has an E.T. lunchbox. Which of course has lil Henry Thomas on it as an homage to his most famous role as Elliot. Love the details in this show.

Seebackward

Not going to lie..I saw this episode first when I was dogsitting...alone in a big house...during a thunderstorm. I only watched the first half that night.

Ben Wheeler

There have been some times I worried for Natalie when we picked something, but this isn't one of them. Yes, this is spooky, but I'm looking forward the sad crying after the last episode when Natalie tells us how much she liked it. Oh, pay attention in the second or third episode for the long one take scene they filmed. They were VERY proud of that and talked about it in the making of.

Christopher Boscarino

agreed, it is an exceptional piece of storytelling and well worth it. not perfect, but satisfying

Wu Sha Ling

Midnight Mass is even worse.

Dooly

Yeah my advice is to completely ignore Bly Manor. I still don't understand how it was so unbelievably crap. Just pretend they stopped after this season

ButtyOh

Ugh.. at work, can't wait to watch this...

LarryJ nyc

Bly Manor wasn't as good so you can skip it lol

Simon Bauer

I like the young Luke/adult Luke transformation because I know a lot of people who look completely different after they've grown up, and some who still look the same.

Dante

"Let go of the hallway!" I died laughing. This show loves wide angles. Almost everyone misses Theo in the beginning. She's the girl that Steve tells to go back to bed and Shirley is the one still sleeping and talking in her sleep. People usually think they're the same girl because they look alike. The casting in this show is phenomenal. The kids look like their older counterparts and they look like a family (The only one I question is young Luke vs old Luke). As someone who hates horror as well, there are very few scary films/shows that I enjoy so i understand the apprehension, but I love this series. I've watched Hill House in whole over a dozen times. Both this and Bly Manor are more than just horror and have an extremely compelling story. I look forward to more reactions.

Haughtbreaker Nic

let see if you can spot the hidden ghosts in these episodes

Tiger Chu

A differing opinion makes you sad? That you experience sadness because someone else dislikes something you like makes me sad. Oh, the irony.

JediLounger

Can't wait to rewatch this! For everyone that hasn't seen it, keep an eye out for the 43 hidden ghosts in the series

Matt Adams

Oh....So this is why Nat has needed regular Ted Lasso injections.

Essero Eson

I have watched it all, like I said. Well acted, directed and produced. And for me, very very boring, because I just do not care about what is happening on screen. If you enjoy it, that's great. Just not for me.

JediLounger

Make sure to always look in the background when they’re at the house, you will always see a ghost just out of shot in the background

Luke Smith

She will 100% fall in love with it

Dante

It always makes me a little sad when somebody reduces this show to "it's just a bunch of jump scares".

Thomas Yanez

Have you watched the whole series? Because just from a technical standpoint it’s insanely impressive. Episode 6 is one of the most masterfully shot and directed episodes of TV I’ve ever seen. I would strongly challenge your assertion that it’s one note just because it has jump scares, as that is very clearly not the main purpose of the story.

Dante

Great spooky series. Be prepared to use that brain and try and keep up with the story line. I truly hope your ready for this… but that still won’t help you πŸ˜‰ sorry Nat

Maverick

The fact that she's already drawn into the family parts (admittedly as a safety area from the scary) tells me that she is probably going to love the show by the time it is done, even if she wouldn't believe us telling her that now.

Thomas Yanez

That's good, I am glad you are able to enjoy the series. While there may be many layers to its story, the basic mechanic it uses to tell the story, ghost based horror, is not interesting to me, and I find it to be rather one note. Jump scares. There can be lots of subtext in a story, but if I do not find the delivery mechanism effective, it's hard for me to get into it and care.

JediLounger

This series absolutely blew me away. It is so much more than just another ghost story, and I can’t wait for you to discover that, Nat. One of my favorite limited series of all time.

Dante

Nat, thank you for the start of Natmare Season 2, you were touching at times, but I have to say that your panic moments are funny πŸ˜ˆπŸ˜†, I found really cool your little reference to Little Nightmares 2 (I miss your streams on twitch so much 😭), one of my favorite games (I hope you got to play both games). Otherwise I had never seen this series, and I must say I'm pleasantly surprised, I really can't wait for the following content 😁 I hope Koda comforts you with his cuteness πŸ˜„ I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! πŸ’›

Calo Grsf

I don’t even watch this series for the β€œhorror”. It is SO much more than that

Dante

Theo β€β€β€πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

H Taylor

While this series is well produced, acted and directed, ghost stories are not really my thing. I find ghosts can't match the horror man is capable of, which is why I voted for Lovecraft Country. That show (and book) mapped the scary things we like to watch and read onto reality, which I found to be a very effective storytelling mechanic. I feel the same about A Quiet Place. Great film, but It Follows is the best horror film of the last 10 years, again because it maps the story onto a tangible issue that we deal with in society, and it sucks that Natalie will not be able to experience that and then discuss it with us.

JediLounger

I would honestly not hold it against you if you tapped out mid way through this series, Nat. This show is a top tier great horror drama, though.

Cody Steele

Oooo snap! Here we go….such a good series

Charlie Keeler

Happy Wednesday nat hope you watched this with the lights on and koda was close at hand the sound in this show is haunting enough without watching in the dark lol can't wait to get back from work and see how much enjoyment you had or didn't have lol, what a week so far Ted lasso now this cheers nat you're amazing until the next one stay golden πŸ’›

Ian

Aw yis, Natmares begins!! https://media2.giphy.com/media/P7JmDW7IkB7TW/giphy.gif?cid=ecf05e479zynd1dwjenuawf22ltwnytzvklvptdbwjooqefr&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g

Sean

90 seconds into episode "you guys should just move out of this house already" πŸ˜…

Steve J

Let's begin The Natmare Season 2 😈 even if you are not ready hahahaha (evil laugh πŸ˜†)

Calo Grsf

Spooky scary skeletons sends shivers down your spine! Happy Natmares 2 <3 - Can't believe it's already been a year since the last one :D

Danishprince

Happy Wednesday, Natalie! 😊 I'm really looking forward to watching this show with you. Really looking forward to your reactions. I'll be prepared for any screams due to the jump scares. LOL! Have a great day today! 😊 Until the next video, Stay Golden! πŸ’›

Randee Carreno

I'm ready for something spooky Nat, but I don't think you are πŸ‘»πŸ’› The Nattie Hand Flap(TM) was in use within the first few moments. Can't wait to watch the rest of this season with you. The book that this show is based on was also turned into the movie The Haunting in 1963, which raises the hairs on the back of my neck still, and then was re-made in 1999, again called The Haunting, starring Liam Neeson. Thanks for a great video today Nat. Stay Spooky πŸ’›

Darryl Low

I adore this series. I hope you love it. This will be the first one I watch full reactions for. Stoked.
