Apparently that was a very long single take. Below is a youtube link to a video on how they did it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkhz2W2Gk4g

Did you recognize Steve from Game of Thrones?

While there were plenty of freaky things in this episode (I'm watching it for the first time along with Nat), one of the freakiest is that they put that little 6 year old actress in a coffin. She's braver than I am! :) Hope she wasn't traumatized by that, yikes!

Ron Hiler

She isn't required to do anything, she'll do what she feels like at the time, maybe a discussion, maybe not.

BJ Stephens

A total of 3 cuts in the entire episode. The first is over 30 minutes.

Dave M.

Just gonna leave this, although you will have finished the series by now... With this and the last episode I am disappointed with the lack of review at the end of it. The first few episodes I get... You were scared and glad the episode was over. But these episodes were different. Less (no?) jump scares, just family drama. There were some big reveals. The cinematography was breathtaking (and you mentioned it like... 1 second?)... I didn't expect a 30-minutes in-depth-review. But ending the credits with "see ya next time" just felt really, really cheap :(

Armenusis

That was the mom’s ghost Steven saw.

Dave M.

I bet she got it on the edit. Of she still does those herself..... Having watched the series twice before this - I remember there being a lot of very cool, well done freaky tweaks in the background. Quite a few ghosts, moving statues, I caught them before I saw them making of, but the making of was the dog's bollocks!

This may have been my favorite episode. The young girl that plays Nellie is amazing...

LarryJ nyc

The GOAT of the series for sure, so well made!

Molecule

This was one long fourteen minute shot. The director/writer was very proud of that, it's in the making of.

Christopher Boscarino

Maybe you don't realize it but this is spoiler territory.

BJ Stephens

"I was right here. Nobody noticed me." And it seems Nat didn't notice her standing at the back of the funeral home when everyone was around her coffin for the first time. (approx 14 min in)

Chris Mick

Oh woah. The endings for the last two episodes hit me really hard. So well done.

Myles Away

I know how much you hate horror and I've wanted to comment about this shows use of horror, but I never want to give anything away, but I will say this. The horror element of this show, while effective, isn't what this show is about. It tricks you with long, silent shots and creepy lighting and of course the actual ghosts, BUT at it's heart it is a family drama and it's beautiful and sad and human. I'm really glad you've been able to see all that.

Kate Herzig

Having so much fun watching this show again with your reactions Natalie! I wish October had more days haha

Jenna

I swear to god this series made me, a grown man, cry the whole way through. The story and cinematography is so very good. I can't believe how of any genre, horror would be the one to get me like that

Philippe Dessaints

Here's a nice behind the scenes feature on how the sequences were put together (no spoilers for future episodes, I think). Insanely impressive work from everybody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkhz2W2Gk4g

RE

Was the entire episode a true "oner" (shot in one continuous take)? Because I didn't see any obvious hidden cuts. If so, it was expertly done. *EDIT* Ah, I see that it was 5 separate takes. Still, that's impressive.

Sam Kimpton

Such a great episode, one of the highlights. They built both Hill House and the Funeral Home sets side by side and connected from the beginning in order to accomodate this episode. Walls had removable panels and alcoves for cast and crew to move between as the camera panned around. It's a marvel of dramatic and production quality.

This episode is one of the best directed episodes I’ve ever seen. A perfect 10/10 masterpiece the whole way through. I’ve seen this episode more times than I’d like to admit lol.

Dante

Happy Thursday Nat you crying is understandable the writing and acting is incredible and we know you love your characters and it's natural to feel for this family 💛 look forward to watching along after work can't remember what happens in this episode but I'm sure it will come bk to me, hope all is well with you and you continue to stay golden 💛

Ian

Another masterclass of performance and camerawork today Nat, and just this unsettling feeling in the stomach, which I'm sure you had too. Kevin was definitely the MVP when it came to "Grab a drink, Grab a Snack" Nat, promise me that when we are done with Natmares, you're going to do 6 months worth of Feel-Good movie polls. I think between this month's content and GOT, we've all been spending far too long in the company of darkness, death and destruction 😊 Thanks for another heart-wrenching reaction today Nat 💛 4 episodes to go, but first we have to deal with that clown....🤡

Darryl Low

Hi Nat, thank you to share this really touching reaction with us, I'm really sorry to hear what has affected your family, it's really sad 😔, I sincerely hope you are well, take care of yourself and give your loved ones a big hug, be safe and stay golden! 💛

This show has a lot of hidden stuff like that. It would need a second viewing to notice everything. But yeah, looks like Nat missed the bent neck lady in that scene. This is one show that everyone should watch at least twice to appreciate it fully and notice the hidden stuff that the team has put in each episode.

Navjot Singh

The buttons on her eyes were a reference to the fact that Nellie liked to collect buttons as a kid. And her mom also used to call her Button.

Navjot Singh

Huh. I've never seen a reactor miss bent-neck Nellie standing at the back of the room in the scene where the dad first views young Nellie in the coffin, but it looks like Nat did.

Thomas Yanez

The cinematography in this episode is just off the charts!!

I think this show does such an amazing job portraying grief, coping (and not coping), issues of trust, misunderstanding, resentment, and yet love, loyalty, and cautious forgiveness. I love rewatching the show because long after the scares fade, the human drama still resonates deeply, and it’s just good to see these characters again.

Byron

Happy Thursday, Natalie! 😊 Watching this one right away. I think one of the reasons that this is one of my favorite episodes is because of the way a scene was filmed. In a 17 minute one-shot take. This was another great episode reaction. Have a great day today! 😘 Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Randee Carreno

It is a one long shot. The whole episode was shot in 5 takes iirc. The first shot is 17 minutes long. It took them a month to prepare the set and everything for this episode.

Navjot Singh

When you're sat refreshing Patreon waiting for this to appear.🙂👍👍👍
