I don't know why, but the version that I am watching is slightly faster than yours, so I have to pause every now and then, so it's synced up. I don't know why the version here in Germany is faster tho

Yeah. Next episode is still very good and watchable, although there are some horrifyingly grotesque images that I don't look directly at during re-watches. The subject matter of episode 4 is just my breaking point though. Every time I try to re-watch it, I just can't. So I skip to episode 5. That being said, I am glad I made it through the first time. So if you decide to to watch it or skip it, I'm with you either way. Much love for this series and your reaction to it!!

Should be noted that I think the flashlights weren’t half bad, they’re not great, but the radiation was affecting their performance I think.
Also, and I’ve mentioned this in other reactions to this show on YouTube in a plethora of comments, but that thermal explosion is a point about the disaster that actually baffles me to think they’ve accepted it as fact. The mention of an explosion equivalent to several megatons is comparable to a thermonuclear weapon, the most powerful kind of nuclear weapon. The characters seem to be under the impression that when the molten lava hits the water it’ll result in a nuclear explosion hence the reference to a powerful shockwave and obliterating and flattening a large area.
This is frankly nonsense.
They use the term “thermal explosion”. This is simply an explosion resulting from water flashing into superheated steam and the expanding gases resulting in an explosion. A nuclear explosion i.e. similar to a nuclear weapons is only achieved by reaching critical mass during nuclear fission as Legasov explained in the helicopter. A nuclear reactor can harness the power of a nuclear weapon but the conditions in a reactor are such that the nuclear chain reaction that releases energy doesn’t create an nuclear explosion.
A nuclear explosion cannot result from molten fuel flashing into steam.
It is true that the fuel melting down into the tanks was a threat and it was kept secret by the Soviet government for 20 years, but had it happened, the explosion would’ve been equivalent to about 149 tons of TNT, a large explosion, and powerful enough to disperse all the remaining material in Reactor 4, but not nuclear, and certainly not in the megaton range of explosive power.
There’s numerous sites that prove this with calculations of what was involved. Google “Chernobyl thermal explosion”.

Every aspect of filmmaking craft is superb with this series. This makes the third thime i watch Chernobyl in full and what i'm mostly affected by this time around is the music and the powerhouse acting duo that is Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård.

“Power resides where men believe it resides" (Lord Varys (Conleth Hill) “Game of Thrones” S2 E3: ‘What Is Dead May Never Die’ ‘HBO' 2012).
“Our power comes from the perception of our power” (President Mikhail Gorbachev (David Dencik) “Chernobyl” E2: ‘Please Remain Calm' ‘HBO' 2019).

Natalie, there's not one of your followers that would fault you if you gave up on the series. The real events depicted in this show are even worse than the show - and the show makes Squid Game look like Ted Lasso. This wasn't a series of technical glitches. This wasn't ego run amok. This was the kind of hubris that can end a planet. And yet there are hundreds of reactors worldwide. (440 mid-last year, Google says.)
The three men that went in were superheroes. But sadly not from Planet Krypton. I had no plans to watch this series. I'm watching along with you, even though I read everything I could get my eyes on back in the 1980s. To watch the rest of this series, doesn't take a superhero, but it's going to take heroic courage. None of us doubt that you have that courage. I, for one, do not wish all-too familiar nightmares on you. In all seriousness, i strongly suggest you cut bait and move on to Avatar The Last Airbender early. No shame in that. But if you "soldier on", i will follow you into the dark. And i know exactly how bad the Nuclear Nightmares can be.
In any case, we are with you.

They put that on the screen at the end of the fifth episode - you might have let her get to it on her own. Geez.

Yes, the radiation killed the flashlights. It's also why the helicopter crashed, not just from the pilot being exposed. Strong enough radiation destroys electronics.

Hi and thanks for your new great reaction!
This serie is so cool and really scary at the same time, especially the end. But again, the fact it happened in reality is more than scarier.
I love the acting and the sound design for this show, sometimes, the lack of sound can really make a situation more anxious, like the scene where they show empty city. And Minsk is the capital of the Belarus.
To conclude, I hope you prepared yourself mentally for the next episodes... They will be very hard for someone like you, easily emotional, if you're not, I'll send you some vibes of courage in support 🤗
I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

As they said in the series, nothing else like this event has happened on this planet, so the accident was a flashpoint for me and still is. I have read about it constantly in books, Wikipedia, whatever is out there, as there is still stuff going on with the plant as efforts continue to contain the situation. A large concrete shell was just finished a few years ago that fits over the remains of the relevant parts of the plant.
So here are some interesting tidbits.
There were several video games made about what is known as The Exclusion Zone, the large area around the plant. Known as the Stalker series, they have serious issues such as bugs and other things, but they are also highly unique and not really comparable to other games. A more modern game is due to come out early next year.
One of the guys I follow on YouTube ran a Patreon that he had to shut down because of the pandemic, but before that happened he went to Chernobyl and did a tour of the Exclusion Zone, and made several videos. It was known as Cloth Map, and he went lots of other places as well. Links below.

Hbomax in Europe play the episodes at 25 fps instead of the original 25 about 4% faster. You can change the settings on the Youtube player to 1.05x speed. It's not perfect, but it's better.

Personal story. My grandfather was a fisherman in southern Finland when the chernobyl happened. Now if you go to the map and look Finland isn't excactly neighbour of Ukraine. Because of the winds, some radiation landed on the finnish lakes also. Nothing lethal but you had to make sure that fish wasn't too contaminated so you can eat it. Because of that my grandfather had to send couple of times a year some fishes to the ministry of energy, where they would see, how much radiation the fishes had. He stopped actively fishing in about 2010 and still in 2010 he had to sent those fishes to the authorities. It's a very interesting story about how long term effects nuclear accident can have.

Amazing to see Nat getting so frustrated with the Soviet bureaucracy… welcome to communist government! It’s interesting to note that Scherbina, as a member of the central committee, is the highest ranking person at Chernobyl at this point. The central committee outranks everyone - local politicians, even the legal system. Judges can’t question them.

Also fun fact, the three men that went down to open the valve all lived. One died in 2005 of a heart attack and the other two were alive as of 2015

Interestingly the "Please remain calm" is from the announcement that the armoured car was playing in Russian when it was driving around before the evacuation, which is the actual evacuation message from the event. You can listen to it with translation on youtube if you wish to.

As the final episode makes clear, part of the reason they were in denial that the reactor exploded was that it was believed that the design of an RBMK reactor made an explosion impossible. They were kind of right, except for, well, I don't want to spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen beyond this.

That episode was totally absorbing. The denial of the runners of the power plant was just so frustrating, even when confronted with the facts. That final scene was so intense. It definitely felt like a horror movie Nat, but the horror was real.
Needing something to lighten the mood now, so looking forward to your final Festive Friday Feature tomorrow. Thanks for another fine reaction today Nat 💛

The General says "There is a whole Town" to Legasov because he sees him trying to say sorry for the fact, that the General was exposed to so much radiation. It is the General again thinking about others. At least that what i think this scene means.

Hey Natalie on a much lighter note than Chernobyl. If you haven’t heard/watched. Apple TV has a Ted Lasso animated shirt for the holidays up. Like 5 minutes long, really cute. And yes we must have figures of each character. Get on it Apple!
