Help me pick a movie for Black History Month!

Voted for Hidden Figures because I've already seen We Are The Titans a million times. Solid movie, 100% but that's no chance that it's new for most anyone. I personally haven't seen Hidden Figures yet, but I'd love to. So that has my vote!

I came here to suggest 1989's Glory starring Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick or 1990's Cadence starring Charlie Sheen and Laurence Fishburne (back when he was still billed as 'Larry' Fishburne), but after reading this entire thread, it seems the vast majority has already recommended Glory before me. In which case I say listen to your fans Nat; see if you can add in the extra film without a poll (wouldn't be the first time you watched a film solely based on community hype). - I have no doubt this post will warrant another "Just what you see pal" comment that has been frequenting these responses :p

The family of the man that film is about say that it is a horrible representation of their family's history, so maybe a movie that hasn't been disowned by the subjects involved would be a better fit. Might be a good movie but never saw it because it was so very publicly trashed by the family.

The lack of votes for The Last Black Man in San Francisco makes me sad. I do feel like 12 Years a Slave and Hidden Figures make the most sense for Black History Month. I do love Remember the Titans though. Great movie with a ton of heart. 12 Years a Slave is a very heavy film while hidden figures is a very inspirational film. Definitely some good choices here.

If you've never seen 'Black Dynamite', you seriously need to consider it, one of the best comedies. If you want something serious, 'Marshall' starring Chadwick Boseman was amazing.

Some of these movies aren’t necessarily accurate….Hidden Figures is true but they added something to it that wasn’t true and they do the same thing in 12 years a Slave. Also One Night in Miami isn’t true either. Even though Remember the Titans is one of my favorite movies(and I voted for it), we are more than just slave movies and civil rights movies. I definitely would have put Judas and the black Messiah, Malcom X, The BlackKlansman over some of these if you wanted to really touch on civil rights. We have great comedy and drama movies that would be great that don’t get a chance ever. With that said I think it’s great that your doing this.

Hidden Figures is such an amazing film, the entire cast gives it their everything. But Taraji P Henson deserves special praise, her monologue scene is just....wow. Plus it's just lighthearted and funny enough that you won't have to reach for the tissues every 2 minutes (I feel a little bad for how much we've made you cry with our recommendations lately, with all of us crying alongside you haha).

Hidden Figures is easily the best of these for you. 12 Years a Slave is very good but very depressing for obvious reasons. I've seen others suggest Glory and I'll also do that. The Tuskegee Airmen is another good one and so is Something the Lord Made.

Hidden Figures was an eye opener and a great story that I never knew before this movie - here is another one that you should add Amistad, which is a great movie, In 1839, the revolt of Mende captives aboard a Spanish owned ship causes a major controversy in the United States when the ship is captured off the coast of Long Island. The courts must decide whether the Mende are slaves or legally free. it has some heavy hitter stars in it - great movie

Personally I think the new western <i>The Harder They Fall</i> would be a great BHM choice. I also agree with Jay Wacker that <i>I Am Not Your Negro</i> would be a good choice.

I feel like I always get to these things when it's set in stone, this one is close though. 12 Years a Slave would be my pick, but there are some others. Driving Ms. Daisy Roots Amistad ** GLORY ** Not a "full" movie, but partially a documentary. It's not like a Ken Burns thing though. I go for remember the Titans. Hidden Figures is also great, but they condensed too much issues into the picture, that were not accurate for NASA in the 60's anymore (like the toilet thing) - not that they were not an issue in other places or even outside the complex.

I can recommend 'The Passing' with Tessa Thompson, nothing outstanding but it plays with the topic of people of colour trying to fit in during the 50's and its an interesting watch. definetly better than any slave movie that does nothing but violently show black people suffering on screen for 2 hours.

42 is a good movie too. Tells the story of Jackie Robinson who was the first black player in baseball and he’s played by Chadwick Boseman. An insane movie and it’s totally worth checking out.

Best movie on this list is One Night in Miami. Why would anyone want to watch Natalie react to a slavery movie that is going to be hard to watch. The movie is so brutal and just gonna be uncomfortable. I hope literally any other movie wins.
