I learned about Imperial Japan after learning the fire benders in this show were based on them. Japan has a fascinating and honestly incredibly fascistic history for such a small island nation. I wish we had learned more about Asian history in school as much as we did American and European. (African as well but they don't have rep in this show so this is an aside to the point of the comment)

2023-07-10 14:44:15 +0000 UTCSuper late reply lol but it makes sense to me tbh. Kids are dumb #1 but any perceived advantage that isn't skill based is especially held against kids. "he's huge it's not fair, he's tall it's not fair, he's from a wealthy family it's not fair" etc. A kid would see him being good at air bending as him being good at something they could also achieve. Since they are all airbenders. what they can't achieve is being taller, bigger, richer, or the avatar. Like when I was a kid the most talented players got chosen first for any games, but if we had found out one of them was secretly an adult professional player, even if that didn't immediately enhance their skills past what we knew, no kid would find it fair for them to play. Kids know the difference between someone who had worked really hard and is skilled and someone who seemingly was born with advantages. Not that I'm excusing their behavior, but it makes sense with kid logic. They no longer saw him as one of them.

They never felt Aang had an unfair advantage even though he had already mastered airbending(which is why he has his arrows) and the rest of them haven't. They didn't care about any unfair advantage until they learned he was the Avatar (though he has not yet trained in any other element yet).

I just wanted to say that the Fire Nation and their strong honor code is heavily based in Japanese culture, specifically Imperial Japan. Hair is closely linked to honor, so Zuko shaving everything except for his ponytail is a sign of shame from a humiliating defeat. Along with his scar, it's an extra layer of visible shame that adds insult to injury... literally. Pay attention to hair in the show, it usually has a deeper meaning ;) Loving rewatching the show with you, looking forward to the next one!

I like the episode because it is the first time I remember Aang making up a lie from whole cloth in order to help people get past their bs. Episode 12 is the first time I remember seeing a "kids show" spelling out that the father of a child is the one who maimed their child for the whole world to see. Parental abuse is no laughing matter and to see it brought up here in an animated show shows courage from the writers. To show it in conjunction with the emotional abuse from the monks to Aang... I have mad respect for this show. Loving your reactions Natalie.

2022-01-28 20:30:40 +0000 UTCSo, here we have two extremes, one of the most reviled episodes followed immediately with one of the best. I've never understood the hatred "The Great Divide" seems to get. No, it's not the best episode, but it's not terrible either. Yes it's childish, and the message is simplistic, but we could probably find other lessons besides the obvious one. For me, it's a reminder that history often isn't what we think it is. "The Storm" reveals the motives of Aang and Zuko. This is not the last time their stories will be told in parallel. And you noticed something that will become very important later. A couple of them, actually. Also note, this is the second time Zuko has had the Avatar in his sights (well, last time it was just Appa), but turned away to take care of other matters. Then it was saving his uncle, and now it's saving his crew. So, as obsessed with regaining his honor as he is, it's not to the point that he's willing to sacrifice others for it.

One interesting fact about episode 12 is that the way they show how the avatar is identified with the toys is actually very similar to how real monks determine the identity of the next incarnation of the Dalai Lama

2022-01-28 02:24:44 +0000 UTCI think The Great Divide is fine. A lot of the dislike comes from the fact that it's largely disposable in the greater story. That would be enough for fans to move it down in their rankings. But because it's basically a stand-alone episode that doesn't factor into the serial storytelling, it was also the most re-run episode of AtLA when the show was airing. So in addition to it being an unpopular episode, it was also the one people saw the most. Those two things together make it unpopular in the fandom. But I think if you're just watching the show on a streaming service like this, it's forgettable, but fine.

Just to bring emphasis to the travel time - a thing that gets subsequently less prominent, like with any other show. The laugh at about three and a half minutes before episode 12 ends, was also very "Zach Tyler Eisen as Aang"-like. Just had the same ring in my ears :)

The reason why aang doesn't get cold is because he bends the air currents around him. It’s a special airbending trick to regulate his own body temperature. Which is why you never saw him wearing extra clothes in the South Pole. As for his tattoos; you get tattoos when you master airbending. He got the tattoos early because he had already mastered 35 airbending forms and invented a new one (the air scooter), making it 36. Looking forward to your next reactions! ❤️
