John Oliver and This American Life have done whole stories on how segregated schools, especially in the North, still are. And how vitriolically against integrating them a lot of parents (white parents) still are too. Except they don't say they are anti-integration, they say they are anti-poor/thug/drug-dealer/gang banger whatever new slur people have invented for poor kids of color now. The reason its such an issue especially in the north is because northern states were never forcefully integrated like the south was. Not that this is never an issue in the south, but one of the biggest perpetrators of segregated schools is New York. Kids aren't legally shoved onto race-based schooling, but due to economic, historical, and societal issues, the same outcome is achieved.

It's because of a specific scene in this film that our friendship song is still Ain't No Mountain High Enough! We are still besties 18 years later. Also, the little girl is Hayden Panettiere! Her most infamous role being in the Bring It On sequel All or Nothing lol but she has been in a lot of good movies too, a Disney/Disney Channel movie veteran! (Speaking of Bring It On...that would be a great movie to react to! the first one haha) My high school did not even have a football team, we were an incredibly small private school. But growing up in Texas I 100% know the culture around football. That's why this movie was my besites' fav, even though we ddin't have a team of our own to root for, she always loved the game.

It's absolutely super corny at times and does a bunch of cliche things, but it does them so well. It was great to revisit this one.

I remember when this came out there was an issue with financing the movie like half way through production and Denzel was so passionate about getting it made that he took a big pay cut to make it happen.

2022-02-05 00:22:57 +0000 UTCYea, good movie, entertaining, thought provoking, and good sports movie, but they took a lot of liberty with history, im from area, we played tc williams in high school, decades later but still, they over played the race part of it, was that still an issue even as close to DC as the area is sure but this isnt the deep south during segregation,the schools that merged to make TC williams were already integrated the players disliked each other cause they previously played against each other, also they didnt play all white schools, they were also integrated at the time, and they crushed that season, won most games by landslides, but that didnt make as good of a movie.

I don't remember the score off the top of my head, but I think they held the losing team to either 0 points or single-digit points. I don't mind so much that this movie takes "creative license" with the events of the story because this a movie, not a documentary. Another great reaction from you, Nat!

Denzel always gives a powerhouse performance, but the whole cast were awesome. When Gerry and Sunshine kissed, I thought you going over the back of your chair! ๐ So many great songs on the soundtrack, and the score by Trevor Rabin got you in the heart. He's written a lot of these uplifting scores for Jerry Bruckheimer productions. Before he started film scoring, he was one of the original members of the 70s band Yes. Come on Nat, get those tissues sorted out ๐ You need your reaction checklist. Iced Coffee - Check, Water - Check, Tissues - Check ๐ Thanks for an incredible video today, and as always, thanks for all your amazing work this week. Have a great weekend Nat ๐

But one thing that definitely was true was the friendship that formed between Herman Boone and Bill Yoast. They remained best friends right up until Coach Yoast passed away a few years back. And, a really special treat, both coaches sat down together and recorded commentary for the initial DVD release of this movie.
