Also, I know a lot of you folks suggested The Shining. I promise I'm not ignoring you. I've just seen it a few times so it's pretty familiar to me and I'm trying to stick to some new stuff only for this season.

2022-10-09 00:50:07 +0000 UTCHave you seen Doctor Sleep? Sequel to The Shining done by Mike Flanagan (who did Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor) and is a fantastic film, really keeps the vibe of the original while simultaneously being true to the source material

2022-10-08 16:09:26 +0000 UTCHuman Centipede is one of the worst films ever made - and not in a 'so bad it's good' way. Just plain bad.
Kev Martin
2022-10-08 09:04:32 +0000 UTCI'm keen to check out Hereditary as I haven't seen it. Haven't seen Halloween either (any of the bazillion versions), but I think there's a reason I've never gotten around to it after all these years. All those Jason/Mike Myers/etc flicks just don't do it for me - more likely to fall asleep than be scared. I must be missing the suspension of disbelief gene for that genre I think.
Kev Martin
2022-10-08 09:01:38 +0000 UTCYeah, I’m definitely joking here for sure. But even watching those, Hereditary still creeps me out. But I’m here to take that journey again.

2022-10-07 19:39:32 +0000 UTCI'd Love for someone to react to Obayashi’s House (Hausu) while knowing how unlikely it is, Probably the best bet would be Cinema Rules, as they do some fairly obscure stuff sometimes. They just did Ringu instead of The Ring, unlike every other reactor.
Richard Maurer
2022-10-07 18:40:30 +0000 UTCIf you end up liking Hereditary, please check out the directors' follow-up movie Midsommar. A very beautiful yet tense movie, but gruesome in some parts.
Adam Doyle
2022-10-07 15:26:31 +0000 UTCYou gotta watch It: Chapter two to finish it off. Also the first Halloween is a classic.
David Sumner
2022-10-07 13:32:48 +0000 UTCI don't know why every review I read of Eraserhead can't seem to make head or tail of what to categorize it as, when Lynch's idea seemed pretty straightforward to me: It's LITERALLY the movie version of that last dream you had after the bad burrito, with the electric blanket on too high. (Or "Why most 'dream sequences' in movies never look like the ones you remember.") If that doesn't sound creepy, think whether you'd want to watch your own during daylight hours... And don't forget to check out Lynch homaging his idea in a memorable first-season episode of "Twin Peaks". And House (or "Hausu", to avoid confusion with the culty overlooked 1986 movie) is probably best summarized as "Horror movie as made by a Japanese TV commercial director"--If you think you know what to expect, you STILL don't know what to expect.

2022-10-07 08:52:08 +0000 UTCHereditary is great, probably the better of Aster’s films, though I’d need to rewatch both to get a new opinion. Another recommendation similar to Hereditary: Darren Aronofsky’s best film Black Swan kind of reminds me of Ari Aster stylistically and thematically, especially when comparing it to Midsommar as a sort of surreal horrific portrayal of a coming-of-age story, though Black Swan definitely leans into the coming-of-age thing more blatantly. Other horror recs: David Lynch’s Eraserhead, maybe the ultimate modern surrealist film. The story is quite straightforward even though it is told with this extremely abstract imagery, and yet it is such an eerie & uncomfortable film from beginning to end; in what may be David Lynch’s most fully realized film from a world-building aspect. Nobuhiko Obayashi’s House, a cult classic film that takes popular culture in Japan at the time (the 70s) and cranks up the extremity to 11 with its absurd & hilarious storytelling, much of the story & imagery taken in large part from visions & dreams of the director’s 10 year old daughter.

2022-10-07 02:28:11 +0000 UTCI think I was screaming to myself for two whole minutes when I realized Hereditary was on the list. I think that is the only movie I've seen that was too scary for me to finish watching. I wanted to vote for Halloween (one of my favorite movies ever) but this one, if I'm going to give myself emotional trauma, it might as well be in support of Nat. Hereditary all the way. 2022-10-06 06:20:02 +0000 UTCHalloween is a good example of 20th-cty. horror (particularly from the mess-you-up 70's), from the days when the chief motivation for seeing a horror movie was to be "scared", not "psychologically disturbed, and teased with artistic metaphor".
Eric Janssen
2022-10-06 06:09:13 +0000 UTCAs much as I love the EVIL DEAD movies as a franchise, the first movie is not my favorite. Unless you commit to watching the entire movie and TV franchise, don't bother. 2022-10-06 05:16:12 +0000 UTCAs excited (and worried) as I am for Natalie to see Hereditary, I feel like it just makes more sense for her to finish the IT series. She's already aware of the characters and plot so it would be a better way to start the spooky season than to just flat out scare the wits out of her. IT Chapter 2 gets my vote

2022-10-06 04:33:30 +0000 UTCHi Nat, I recommend Triangle starring Melissa George. It's genuinely disturbing while not being a gorefest. It's stayed with me for years. Basically, it's what Hell might really be like. No lakes of fire or Pinhead people, just one sad, disturbed mother forced to confront her own guilt, and trying to erase her terrible mistake, endlessly.

Second one is the same director, same main character and same premise but with a better budget and production values. Not that the first one is bad, it isn't. It is actually very good, but I think you would enjoy the second more. Just my opinion, I'm sure others will disagree. Ps Hereditary is not scary in the classic sense, it is disturbing.
