FIRST TIME WATCHING: Knives Out!!

Surprise!!

I thought this could be a fun one to dive into and, with the sequel now in theatres, I really wanted to watch it sooner rather than later. I had SO MUCH FUN with this one and really loved it. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments.

Take care and stay golden :)

I fucking love this movie. I liked it a lot more than Glass Onion. I wish we could have Benoit and Marta together again. They were so good together! The story was so good and the way they filmed and edited it was brilliant. I've watched it many times and it never gets old. It was set in the Boston area (outside Boston), so your guess of the Hudson Valley was close. This was fun watching your reaction and you did a good job of guessing what would happen. Well done!

Phillip Bates

As soon as I acquired this movie (on Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital) I decided to watch this watchalong, and I'm glad I did, this movie is SO much more fun when you get to see someone discover it in realtime. Even knowing what's going to happen it's still a fun ride. I'm just sorry that most of your hopes for Glass Onion didn't happen, other than Benoit Blanc's return; I heard Rian Johnson wasn't happy they called it "A Knives Out Story" for that very reason, it sets up unfair/undue expectations. Having seen both, I think this is the better of the two (though some may disagree with me), I also think this one is a bit more timeless, whereas Glass Onion is crammed with references that I think will age badly in 10-15 years. (Or maybe I'm being naive about the future.) It's great in its own way, but is very different from this one. (Which you know by now.)

Troy B.

Murder mysteries are supposed to be written backwards, that's how you write them.

Xeph

It might be because Nat uses subtitles. She can read the line of dialogue faster than the actor says it, so her reactions are a beat ahead sometimes.

Rosanne Stewart

If you liked this one, I think you'd like The Gentlemen too, such a different style and so fun to watch

Ben Hooppell

What a fantastic murder mystery. Of all of the fantastic twists and turns, the thing that really seals it for me, that puts a nice cherry on top, is right at the end when Benoit Blanc says "You won, not by playing the game Harlan's way, but yours. You're a good person." The whole thing could have been avoided if Harlan let her try to save him, and all of Ransom's schemes fell apart only because she was the one person willing to lose all of that money in order to help someone else.

Andrew Howard

I have to think that Chris Evans had a huge blast in this. Plus he, Ana de Armas and Daniel Craig were fantastic. Amazing movie.

Chris (darkwater)

Nat, the movie will be out on netflix on dec 23rd which is also my birthday :) the perfect gift to me. when the first movie came out i remember al lot of people who hated rian for the last jedi on twitter apologizing to him for doubting he's a great director lol and he got nominated for an oscar for best original screenplay actually :) <3 and then he made the deal with netflix to develp this as a franchise and i'm so excited for glass onion <3

Nine Anutza

"Glass Onion" is actually being released on Netflix on December 23d, the theatrical engagement was just a one-week thing to qualify the movie for the Oscars and (I'm guessing) because Netflix wanted to flex

sammi

Hi Natalie. This was my first movie after upgrading my Patreon membership, such a great movie (had not seen it before) and it was so much fun having you watch along with me. Thank you Natalie, you're simply the Gold standard for a buddy to watch a movie with.

Hilmar Finnsson

Murder on the Orient Express or Death on the Nile Both also murder mysteries that fit right along with this movie

Rodi Borst

Thanks for giving me an excuse to watch this great movie again - glad you enjoyed it as well :) Clue remains to this day one of my all-time favorite movies; can't recommend it enough. Another Whodunit movie I'd suggest is Gosford Park (2001), written by Julian Fellowes, who would go on to create Downton Abbey. A very clever film.

Michael Cruse

Love the reaction!!! I really enjoy the suprise movie as well 😊

Guillaume

Thanks for a wonderful reaction to one of my favorite movies in recent years! Like everyone else, I eagerly await your reaction to the sequel.

TreehouseOfJorge 4 - Resurrection

Buddy, as a Latino qui aussi parle francais, I can confirm the French do *not* have exclusivity on having their language butchered in film. Ironically, I agree you are correct regarding the pronunciation of 'Blanc' but your overly dramatic offense to the matter is worthy of a cast member in a new 'Knives Out' sequel, so maybe... tone it down a notch?

TreehouseOfJorge 4 - Resurrection

Oh nice, I was looking for a reason to rewatch this movie before I go to the theater to see the new one. Love this movie so much, one of the best "whodunnits" i've ever seen

Riolkin

YES! Clue is an absolute classic!

Patrick Egan

OMG you haven't seen Clue?? You MUST react to it! Pretty please?

Jenny Chalek

Rian Johnson also directed several great episodes of the TV series Breaking Bad, including the tension-filled bottle episode Fly, and the third-to-last episode of the series Ozymandias, the best episode of them all.

james repka

As others have mentioned, even though Glass Onion was just released to theaters this weekend it will be released on Netflix on Dec. 23.

james repka

Probably the best acting scene from anyone is Chris having to act like he hates dogs, lol. If you know anything about him you'd know that he LOVES dogs. A great fun fact in order for the dogs to jump on him he had their toys in his coat pockets and between filming would play with them. And if you really pay attention to the dogs you'll notice that the dogs aren't being aggressive at all, they have their tongues sticking out and wagging their tails, they clearly want to play, lol. When I first saw this I had a feeling it was going to be Chris, for one they never explained Meg hearing the dogs at night and immediately you see them barking at him when he arrives. But also how could you not take the opportunity to make Captain America your bad guy? This was the next thing he did after Endgame and what a great movie to start after finishing with a 10 year career with a franchise. He is just so good in this, so many people were so shocked by him playing a character like this but I wasn't, if you have seen some of his other work it shouldn't shock you. And I highly recommend checking out his other work like Snowpiercer, The Losers, Punctured, Cellular, What's Your Number, Gifted and he actually did a mini series with the kid who was in IT called Defending Jacob which ironically was also his name in this movie, lol, that too was also very good. But for me even though he turns out to be the villain I still find Ransom FAR more likable then any of the other characters apart from Marta and Meg, they are great, enjoyable characters but still just as awful. And I have really no pity for Fran, she could have told the truth and saved everyone more misery but no she had to be greedy just like everyone else and she was dumb, did she really think he wouldn't do anything when she's threatening him? I love how Richard throwing the ball outside ends up being his marriage downfall. I too like the little touch of each family being right next to Harlan with his cake, I wish we got to see what it was really like or who was really next to him. I love the little touches too with showing how they just did not care about Marta. Multiple people tell her that they were out voted with inviting her to the funeral, they all say a different country where she's from and that moment when Richard gives her his empty plate like she's the help just shows you how he sees her and I'm pretty sure that was improved by him and she honestly just took it which makes the moment even better. Some people have mentioned it already but I highly recommend Clue if you loved this, quite similar but different at the same time. It has comedic legends in it such as Tim Curry, Christopher Llyod, Madeline Kahn and much more. And yes it is based on the board game.

Annie519

Walt = Modern day mediocre Larys

Thurnis Haley

That was so much fun! And also... you should see Clue someday, another all star cast in that one.

Jason Hoppenworth

i love ana de armas so much, and this cast was just incredible. the movie was so well-made too!! i saw the sequel at a screening, but i can't wait to rewatch if you decide to do a reaction for it!

alejandro

The only purpose of that plot point was for that ending. It feels written backwards.

Myles Away

This movie is insanely good. The fact that the first act is the typical crime genre, that the second act turns it on its ass, and then the third act comes back around to crime is amazing. Also, obviously, the editing was top notch during the dialogues especially.

Philippe Dessaints

Hitting the piano key was not about the interviewees lying. After Blanc hits the piano key Lieutenant Elliot always asks the same question; "What time did you arrive at the house?" The piano key was Blanc's signal to Elliot to ask the question. Director Rian Johnson also addressed it in an interview with The Verge. "It’s just a weird goofy thing. I had written in the script that originally Blanc was going to tap the back of Detective Elliot’s chair with his foot every time he wants him to ask a specific question. And when I worked out the geography of it, I saw that Daniel was going to be too far away for his foot to reach, but there was going to be a piano back there. And so just on the day I said, 'This is kind of weird, maybe plink the piano.' And Daniel kind of blinked at me and said, 'Well, okay.' It’s also very intentionally odd, it’s meant to have you say, as Don Johnson says, 'who the fuck is this guy?'"

Opti_Frog

<iframe width="1013" height="760" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PDXrXBsTFSE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe> For some reason this reminds me of Nat.

SilentBobFather

But - you know - good for them, because that means they're getting paid well and set for life if they do it right! I mean, Ana is from Ecuador/Paraguay/Argentina too just like Marta! And they both now have a lot of money! I do not know if Ana really throws up when she lies.

Mastervodo

I thought that too!

Mastervodo

I hope Nat continues to pick some of her own stuff. Or maybe be selective on what goes into polls. For many reasons. I think she has more fun reacting to stuff she enjoys. And sometimes that isn't what wins polls. Plus, she has to balance the wants of a few needy few (us) vs. the sustainability of her channel. Which means watching a currently popular series (like HoD or Andor) vs a 5 year old sub-par season of Marvel (Jessica Jones, Defenders) just because it's Marvel.

Mastervodo

Another great reaction to a great film. I watched this a number of times when it was in theatres and it was fun revisiting it today. Just one clarification, when Marta said she "started at 15" I'm pretty sure she was answering Blanc's question about the hours she worked per week, not that she started caring for Harlan when she was 15 years old.

CheeseRepair

She's actually been around for 10 years or more.... It's just recently that her popularity has exploded. She's not a young actress...she just seems new. It's odd how Hollywood does that. Someone has been a journeyman actor for a while, and then they have one breakout role.... and suddenly they're everywhere, in everything.

Caomhan84

This was the first movie I saw that had Ana de Armas in it. I remember because I noted how cute she was. Now she's like a cranberry in the juice aisle. She's in everything.

Mastervodo

Brick is awesome. Fav quote: "I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up on the lot of you."

Mastervodo

Ransom scooping Marta post will-reading and throwing the situation back into their high-and-mighty faces is the definition of the petty justice. So enjoyable

Thurnis Haley

everyone is so fantastic in this movie!! and the writing is so airtight, this is my third or fourth watch and i still picked up on little details i missed

Ariana Mitchell

i feel like it fits in with the general campiness of the movie. i appreciate they tied in the vomit thing at the end and it had a purpose

Ariana Mitchell

Great pick, and great reaction as well. Neither of these would likely ever win a poll, but if you get the chance I'd also highly recommend checking out Brick (2005) and Looper (2012). Both great films from Rian Johnson. While he swung for the fences with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and IMHO missed horribly and kind of started the wrecking ball swinging in the process for the franchise, his work outside of Star Wars is really really solid.

Brian Jones

Maybe, but Benoit Blanc from the south is clearly from French descendance. It's Matt Leblanc , not LeBlank. If any other language would be as much butchered like French in movies, there would be Riot. Imagine an Italian not really speaking Italian or a Latino not really speaking Spanish, everybody would be like... WTF. But when it's French, let's butchered, who cares.

Daniel Vezina

great to see you enjoyed it so much. for a murder mystery, i'm kinda baffled you expect the cast to return in a sequel. it seems obvious their part is played. but anyway i was happy that the movie started as a typical whodunnit mystery, morphed into a heist/chase then back to whodunnit. all smoothly paced.

Wu Sha Ling

Number one, Nat's reaction to the Hamilton reference was priceless. Number two: Clue Clue Clue Clue CLUE! lol

Michael Kemmet

Also: I'd always assumed his hitting the piano key was less about thinking someone was lying and more about signaling that the particular line of questioning was getting off-track.

Michael G. Munz

Wait, she's never seen Clue?! Oh, that needs to be on a poll soon...

Michael G. Munz

He's an official from the American Embassy in AAWL, and kind of a jerk, which is awesome.

Michael G. Munz

As another reactor, hear hear!

Michael G. Munz

This is a much better surprise than the last one

jamie jones

Golden Doodle... lawl

Walter Lopez

I like the idea that Blanc is just a name he made up for his southern persona and mispronouncing it is a part of that.

Jason Gillman

My favorite Rian Johnson movie is still Brick and would love a reaction to that. Looper would be cool too.

Zach Zombie

Je m'excuse, mais je parle francais et quand on prononce Blanc le "C" est muet . I know when you read it it "sounds" like blan"K" but it's common mistake English people do. If any other language was butcher as much as French in movies...

Daniel Vezina

seeing as how they pronounce it with the C the entire film and in the new film and Rian says it that way in the promotional material… no.

djKENTO

It's Blan(c), you don't pronounce the "C"

Daniel Vezina

I'll always encourage a reactor to pick things they want to watch at least once in a while. I saw this a while ago and I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't find a character that I gave two shits about which seems to be an issue with many recent films.

JayF

i had this weird impression that it was blanc who murdered harlan because i had never seen this before but had seen spoilers yet somehow i switched what i remembered from ransom doing it to blanc but that meant i was actually tricking myself the whole time thinking i knew what was gonna happen until like 30 min left into the movie lmao

ISeeTrees ofGreen

Great reaction. I would love to see more movies like this, one's that Nat chooses rather than ones put onto polls. The poll winners tend to be too similar to each other.....

Chris Gronau

Rian Johnson's Star wars was an... ok movie. It should not have been a Skywalker saga's 1, it would have been better as a Star wars story, like Rogue One.

Daniel Vezina

Layer cake, the movie that made him Bond!!!

Daniel Vezina

I think he’s also a doctor in An American Werewolf in London. And he’s a corrections officer in Blues Brothers and then the Warden in the sequel.

djKENTO

THATS Frank Oz!? I’ve heard his name so many times but I’ve never actually seen him! Such a cool little cameo 😄

Daniel McGuinness

I am being a bit hyperbolic to say it deflates the whole story. I just found it to be SO specific. It feels too contrived.

Myles Away

its unique so i dont mind

Rhys

So underrated/underwatched!

Erik Stevenson

This movie has some really good qualities but that truth-vomit plot point is so lazy it deflates the whole story.

Myles Away

it is such a great movie, and for me came totally out of left field. I am really locking forward to the sequel. (and of course your reaction to it). Even though the cast was amazing, i am looking forward to the sequel beeing more like Columbo as in a totally new case but the detective (daniel craig) beeing the connecting theme.

Andreas Sommer

Really happy that you enjoyed this one! This was a fun movie, for sure. :)

Logan Kerlee

Glass Onion will be on Netflix December 23rd.

Kevin Maguire

The will reader is Frank Oz aka Yoda/Miss Piggie/ Fozzie Bear/ Cookie Monster/ Bert and Grover. And he’s directed a handful of classics like What About Bob and Little Shop of Horrors.

djKENTO

GREAT movie!

Kevin Maguire

Yeah, no sorry. He can make a bad movie and still make a good one with Knives out, just like Shyamalan made the excellent Unbreakable and Split yet somehow got Glass to end up faceplanting in a toilet. TLJ is mostly garbage.

REDR58

Yess! I was waiting for you to react to this movie. Very fun to watch

sharmcant

For real!? lol The last Jedi was shit and Knives out doesnt change that. To make a decent movie doesnt make every other movie a director did suddenly good. That is a stupid thought. No wonder you think that Last Jedi was good.

Curaitis

Word.

Opti_Frog

Yeah kind of funny that she was talking about how she wants to see everyone again but probably won't see Blanc, and it's the exact opposite

Tay Schumaker

I hope in watching this people re-appraise Rian Johnson as a director particularly in the case of Last Jedi. It at least proves that every choice he makes is intentional. I genuinely believe he was trying to expand the definition of Star Wars by presenting the audience with some unpleasant truths about the Jedi and Luke Skywalker. Even the 'failure' plotline was a meta attempt to get the worshippers to realise we have to let the filmmakers treat these stories without this 'Star Wars is a sacred text' intensity. Knives Out shows what can happen when a tired genre is brought to life by subversion and not taking mystery too seriously. If only Star Wars fans could treat their genre the same way...

George Baxter

I'm pretty hyped.

Boomcity

well December 23 isnt that long away...

George Baxter

For another wild performance from Daniel Craig, check out Logan Lucky.

Kevin Mowery

Nat, you mentioned at the end of the video that you thought it would be a while before Glass Onion is available for streaming. It's actually going to be on Netflix on December 23. Netflix produced the sequel and they're only putting it in theaters for a very short time, probably for awards eligibility.

K.N.

Slitting one's own throat is rare, but not unheard of. Former SNL cast member and actor Charles Rocket committed suicide that way. (I am a delight at parties.)

Kevin Mowery

Nat, none of the characters in this movie except Benoit Blanc return for Glass Onion. It's a fresh new murder mystery, with new characters and a new setting.

Andy

Ah hamburgers. I guess only the trailer comes up.

Boomcity

It's not. It will release on December 23.

Navjot Singh

I personally hope you continue to choose movies YOU want to see rather than relying on polls, the problem with Patreon is so many people on here act as one organism demanding the same basic as every other reaction channel, and it can get tiresome when the same choices come up every time. I'd rather you followed your own compass and sought out movies that not only you would like to see but that also might be a pleasant surprise to patrons who are only thinking about what they want to see. Just a general word of encouragement.

David Trumble

Glass Onion is out on Netflix now! Also if Nat liked this she may like Ready or Not. Hopefully that wins a poll someday.

Boomcity

You should see the sequel when it hits streaming!

Kelvin

Wow wasn't expecting this! This movie is incredible

Dante

This movie made me forgive Rian Johnson for what he did to Star Wars. It's just so funny, full of twists and turns, and a great casting all around.

Bou _

You have to discourage it because he is an old man on a lot of medications and he is always trying to eat things that are bad for him in the middle of the night. I have the same issue with my pops!

Jason Dolan

sometimes the sync is not perfect, i usually use her countdown to sync and then her reactions to resync

alejandro

So I saw this movie in the theater; and as I watched it I realized the movie was taking place just a few miles from where I was, lol. It was trippy.

bostonate

Oh yes, what a fantastic surprise! I love this movie, it's just really, really well made and the performances are spectacular.

Erik Stevenson

Great choice, this movie is fantastic! But I have a question. I'm 20 minutes in and I have the video perfectly synced with her but Nat is audibly mentioning things that happen half a second before they do on video. Is there a sync issue?

Boomcity

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 I've seen this movie only twice. And it is one of those great "whodunnit" kind of movies. Another great one that I highly recommend is the 1985 movie "Clue". Looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day & weekend! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Randee Carreno

What a great surprise movie!

K.N.

Awesome I was planning on seeing the sequel today so I can watch them back to back now

Lobos625

Excited you'll be able to watch GLASS ONION next month on Netflix!

Jason Dolan

I've been waiting so long for this one!

G. T. Blackwell

Yay!! This is great! And let’s watch Glass onion when that comes out on Netflix. I just watched it the day before yesterday and it’s a fantastic sequel

Andy

Oh my gosh, I did not see this one coming!! Looking forward to watching this tonight! 😃

Yani Dodge

That is a great pick

PickettsChargingPort

What a suprise i literally just bought this movie and havent seen it as well lol

Rey

Love this movie, great surprise Nat!

Austin

So excited for this. Just saw the 2nd one in this series and stated we need a natalie reaction to it when it comes out next mont. Only then did I find out there wasnt a reaction to the first so this is an amazing surprise.

Joshua Kon

YES!!! NAT, YOU ARE THE BEST, QUEEN! Ask politely and you shall receive!!

Alan Felicia

Awesome surprise, love an excuse to rewatch this movie

Chris Kelly

I liked this movie and i havent watched the sequel yet. Looking forward to your reaction but if I must say as a Marvel fan while I enjoy all content you put out we miss you over here hope you return soon:)

FateMalone

Aw love this movie! So happy to rewatch it with you!

Kerry

YASSSSS. Thank you. Awesome Surprise.

Navjot Singh

Happy Friday Feature Nat. This is a real awesome surprise. Can't wait to watch along with you and see what you made of it 🤗 Your reaction was so much fun Nat. Definitely one of your best. It was so enjoyable to watch. I loved your shrieks at the reading of the will when Marta gets everything 😂 The cherry thing that Marta had in her pocket was a fridge magnet that she used to erase the security video. Fun fact - the guy that reads the will is Frank Oz, the man who performed and voiced Yoda, Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear he he 😊 Daniel Craig gives a great performance and that final moment with the knife is just so good. The sequel is coming to Netflix on Dec. 23rd 🤗 Thanks for a really amazing video today, and thanks as always for all your awesome work this week. Have a brilliant weekend Nat 💛

Darryl Low

Yessss. This is a far more pleasant surprise than last week.
