FIRST TIME WATCHING: Avatar!!
Added 2022-12-23 17:00:03 +0000 UTCHi Folks!
SURPRISE!! It's time to watch Avatar! I know some of y'all may have been expecting Interstellar. That isn't actually being posted until 1/6 (it was a poll done in advance so I could film ahead).
This was a fun one and I'm looking forward to potentially watching the sequel soon :)
Thanks again for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden!

2023-01-07 04:43:17 +0000 UTCAlso obviously not a deal, but they did explain in one part (I think you were talking to us) that Neytiri and Tsutey were betrothed, so it wasn't just a cliche jealousy from afar, but rather a cliche arranged marriage vs true love situation. As Tsutey was to be the next leader of the clan like Neytiri's father even before Jake arrived, and Neytiri would take her mother's place as Sahik.

2023-01-03 12:03:27 +0000 UTCSpeaking on your desire for more development on the human motivations, there are many scenes indicating entire subplots that were cut from the theatrical release, including an extended intro that would maybe fulfill some of your wishes! I'm sure it's available to watch on YT, but basically, unobtanium is a highly valuable resource to the dying planet Earth as a massively efficient energy conductor. Avatar's Earth had naturally occurring unobtanium found somewhere in Africa, but they have already stripped the planet for it's entire stock of it. When we see Jake wheeling around future Earth, it looks like a corner of the Blade Runner version of Earth, dystopian and Cyberpunk. Avatar 1 takes place the year 2154!

2023-01-02 14:36:47 +0000 UTCThe size of the tv doesn't matter! It's the aspect ratio. You cannot see this movie in it's entirety anywhere outside of an IMAX theatre! Please! You must! Search YouTube for 'dune IMAX' and you'll find a video perfectly showing the difference.

2022-12-30 12:38:49 +0000 UTCNat you need to treat yourself! Get an LG C1 or whatever the newer one is called. I have a 48" C1 OLED as a monitor/tv from a year ago and it is simply amazing! I think they have a smaller one too if you need. Bigger and better picture for you, along with 120hz and Gsync/Freesync for extra smooth gaming!

2022-12-30 06:55:23 +0000 UTCI have a 77 inch 4k LG Oled Tv and a really good sound bar. I am not sure what the best ratio is for resolution to viewing area to viewing Distance but my tv is pretty amazing. I have not been to the movies in 3 years, I am looking forwards to a movie I am so excited to to watch I would go back to the movies, but I am not holding my breath. Patience is the worst possible thing Hollywood could have taught people.

2022-12-30 03:13:32 +0000 UTCBtw - it's the unique mineral they're mining (that the mountains are made of) combined with the flux-vortex that was Cameron's reasoning behind the mountains floating.

2022-12-28 05:18:32 +0000 UTCI worked on Avatar for nearly three years during my time in New Zealand. I was a Modeler (like digital sculpting). I got to make a bunch of assets, like Neytiri’s visor, Jakes Navi Knife and sheath, the mining dump truck and various other things. It was my childhood dream to work on a James Cameron film. My mom showed me Terminator and Aliens when I was a kid. They scared the hell out of me but they changed my life. I knew right then and there that's what I wanted to do. After working on Avatar for years I finally got the chance to meet Cameron at a party he threw for us. I went up to him and poured my heart out. I thanked him and said it's not every day you get to thank my childhood hero for inspiring my life's work. He was very kind and asked what specifically I did on Avatar. When I told him, his eyes widened, he reached his arms out to his sides and exclaimed “They looked great didn’t they?!”. It sounds cheesy to say but it was the greatest moment of my life and I will never ever forget it.

2022-12-28 04:16:27 +0000 UTCI love interstellar but this movie, when I saw it at the theatres, it was like I was witnessing cinema history! I’ll never forget it, Brought tears to my eyes, haven’t seen this movie in years, thanks Nat! Very enjoyable to watch it with you! 2022-12-26 08:35:47 +0000 UTC@Brian Jones: Neither are realistic, Avatar 1's Na'vi just look like they're out of a PS3 cutscene because they're full CGI characters in well-lit environments from a 2009 film. I strongly suggest going to the nearest mirror and looking at your face. It might help you better determine what "realistic" actually means. If it looks like your skin is shiny silicone with little no lines or pores and your eyes reflect light like cloudy marbles like Avatar 1's Na'vi, then you're probably the one in need of an optometrist.

2022-12-26 08:09:34 +0000 UTCThere was alot more peopl involved in that movie and its good message. Youd know that if you watched it. Im sure every movie has someone terrible in it.

2022-12-25 14:57:15 +0000 UTC@Foxguava: Yeah but he was comparing the first Avatar to modern films @Brian Jones: I think Maz Kanata is far more realistic looking than the Na'vi (even if her character design looks like a geriatric Koopa with no shell). Avatar 1's Na'vi have a very uncanny valley level of smoothness to their skin and there is far less detail there than there is with Maz. @David Crabtree: Uhmmm, ackshually the term "space" just refers to the physical universe beyond the earth's atmosphere

2022-12-24 21:43:40 +0000 UTCI remember seeing this back in theaters when it first released. Initially saw it in 2D and it was so good we went back the very next night to see it in 3D. Wow what that an experience. I've watched it once or twice again over the years but it has been a long time so I'm looking forward to revisiting it with you!

2022-12-24 21:18:45 +0000 UTCfun fact, Unobtanium is a real engineering term and has been for a while, its used when someone wants to make something but the material required doesn't exist because current known materials are either not conductive enough, not strong enough, to heavy, to brittle and so on. been around since the 1950s according to google
Tesh
2022-12-24 20:55:10 +0000 UTCGlad you had fun. Haven't seen it since it was at the cinema, and it totally went out of my mind (along with the 3D craze of the time back then), since the story was so underwhelming. Basically the only reason this was hype back then was cinemas being fitted with tech to enable watching it in 3D. I certainly don't plan on watching it again or a sequel. Unless someone pays me to do it.
Patrick Armbruster
2022-12-24 19:28:33 +0000 UTCThat was a really fun watch, but rewatching again after so long made me realize just how unmemorable this film is, at least when compared to other major sci-fi franchises. Other people have mentioned the derivative story, but I'd argue it's more the lack of iconic designs, scenes, or even lines that make this movie forgettable. Not that any of it is BAD, but the only things that really stick with me afterwards are the world of Pandora (which really is beautiful) and the designs of the Na'vi. And on the "betray your own race" quote, I think it feels out of place if you come at it with a contemporary understanding of how we use the word "race" in our society (to refer to people of different skin colors, ethnicities, etc.), but in sci-fi it's very commonly used interchangeably with species (ex. the human race). It also just kinda ties back into the whole colonizers vs natives historical metaphor, too.
bchansta
2022-12-24 18:25:13 +0000 UTC@The Pious Skeleton - Hard disagree. In fact, I'd say most of the stuff ILM has been producing over the last few years, at least in the realm of performance capture, has been pretty lackluster by comparison. For example.... Take a good look at Maz Kanata in the new SW trilogy. The characters from Avatar look miles better by comparison. The performance capture looks smoother, the lighting and shadow have far more depth, it's literally night and day.... Same with something like Thanos from Infinity War/Endgame. He looks like purple Play-Doh by comparison......smh...... And the flaws REALLY show when you watch them back on the small screen.
Brian Jones
2022-12-24 17:54:53 +0000 UTCThis film came out right when I was studying VFX, so it was a real treat and inspiration. I remember the director/producer who wanted to make this film waited for a decade or 2 for technology to catch up before their vision could be realized. On the side note, Jake didn't really caused the bulldozing of the sacred site. They were already on the way there and will reach the tree in 3 months, which is the timeline that was given to convince the natives to move from the tree. They were going to blow up the tree anyway with or without Jake's intel, which did make it easier since they knew where exactly to target at the tree; but it doesn't make a difference because they would simply just use more missiles. The named the ore UN-OBTAIN-IUM which is hilarious xD
FatLittleButterfly
2022-12-24 17:39:48 +0000 UTCIf you don't watch it in theatres you don't get to complain about it later. Some of these movies are made explicitly for that environment. Watching it on a 42" tv with no hdr and no surround sound is a disservice to the experience.

2022-12-24 11:51:00 +0000 UTCBut they were all of them deceived, ... for another reaction was made.... Honestly I love this movie much much more than Interstellar. Nice surprise Top Nugget. 2022-12-24 10:31:08 +0000 UTCIn all fairness... Avatar was working with essentially 10 years older technology while pioneering whatever systems they needed...all things that were a lot more common place by the time Force Awakens came around. Heck ILM was among the many effects houses that came in to work on Avatar.
Foxyguava
2022-12-24 09:51:56 +0000 UTCOne of the most over-hyped movies of all time imho. Basically Dances With Wolves in space. The visuals are good overall but I've honestly seen better. As much as I detest Disney's Star Wars trilogy in writing, directing, and acting, their visuals blow the first Avatar out of the water (pun intended).
The Pious Skeleton
2022-12-24 08:30:24 +0000 UTCYes, the environmental message is ham-fisted to the point of beating you over the head, and yes the story has been told and retold a thousand times so it's predictable as hell, but the world building of this film was and still is absolutely incredible and unmatched. The visuals rival anything Marvel, Star Wars, or any other CG heavy property is doing even now (13 years later). The detail, use of lighting and shadow, array of color, and the sheer creativity in worldbuilding alone are what made this film the most profitable of all time. Sadly you really should have seen it in a theater in IMAX and in the original 3D, as it's use of the 3D format was pretty amazing and really helped bring the world of Pandora to life. Glad you enjoyed it though and finally got around to seeing it. Hope you're having a great Christmas/Hanukkah.✌️

2022-12-24 02:25:00 +0000 UTCMade extra effort to go see this movie in the best theater in my area and I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals but I thought the story was too familiar and not that great but enough for me to think the movie was okay. But between the release of the first movie and news that they were finally giving the sequel a definite release date, I never gave it much thought. The movie had no pop cultural imprint other than it's box office results.

2022-12-24 02:19:34 +0000 UTCi love this movie and this world, there's so much extra lore to the world, like for example the floating mountains are possible because of the unobtanium, its heavily magnetic, solid and light, so the magnetic field is strong enough to hold up the mountains, also people like to joke about the name unobtanium but its a real engineering term used for the perfect material for engineering. also the air has Oxygen but its what else is in the air that's the issue, its why it knocks you out so fast. also a cool thing those monkeys with the split arms are supposed to be a hint to why the Navi have 4 limbs while everything else has 6, the monkey things are the half way point, showing at some point the limbs were lost in evolution. because its easier to move through the trees. (there is obviously the meta reason of actors since its all motion captured, but still its nice that there is an in world reason haha) I love the world the built with this movie and it only gets bigger in the next, i think you'll love it. I think i personally like this movie more, but not by much, visually the new movie is insane, its hard to describe, both are beautiful movies!

2022-12-23 22:03:11 +0000 UTCIf you want to get technical about it most stories are essentially all the same, Joseph Campbell is a writer who wrote about stories with his "A Hero with a Thousand Faces" having the idea of "The Hero's Journey" an outline that seems to be in almost every movie or story, at least the ones with "heroes". I think people have changed more then the entertainment, now we have a group of people who derive more gratification from disliking something and ripping it apart as opposed to just watching something that is meant to distract you from life for a few couple or in Camerons case a few hours. Personally not really interested in the sequel at least in theaters, but I would never try and mess with other people enjoying it.

2022-12-23 20:56:00 +0000 UTCI never got the enthusiastic acclaim for this film. I found it to have a recycled plot, the visuals didn't wow me, and I wasn't invested in the characters. I didn't dislike the film, but I saw it once and was "eh, that was ok". But that's the beauty of all films being completely subjective, not everything has to be for me, and I'm glad it has its fans.

2022-12-23 19:42:48 +0000 UTCI know it cuts into your reaction gig, but seeing the first Avatar movie in the theater in 3D was one of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had. I would highly recommend it with the second one, at least.
Jomero
2022-12-23 19:18:25 +0000 UTCwatched it last night on the 3D IMAX. Never have been much of a fan of 3D (usually gimmicky at best) and even less of a fan of HFR (high frame rate) which has gives it the notorious 'soap opera' look. But holy smokes, Cameron knows how to use his own tech. I didn't think it would be possible to make the Avatar 1 visuals look pedestrian but definitely does IMO.

2022-12-23 17:17:44 +0000 UTCBefore people pile on with the, 'this story is so simple' and 'it sucks'. Yes. We've seen this story before. More than once. Remember most kids today likely haven't seen Pocahontas and/or dances with wolves. This was their first time seeing this story. It teaches valuable lessons and we will see it retold over and over again in different mediums for future generations. It's not a bad story. Avatar is still the highest grossing film ever and James Cameron directed 2 (now 3) sequels that were better than their predecessor. The hate surrounding Way of Water is beyond unwarranted.

I saw the second one yesterday and it is truly mind-blowing 😊 You're too clever Nat for figuring out the final moment of the movie he he James Horner re-united with James Cameron after Aliens and Titanic to do the score for this movie and it's just so good, especially the finale. It's just 30 minutes of epic-ness. Your face when the choir soared when all the Ikran swarmed in was the same as mine. That moment gets me every time 🤗 There is an extended cut which has a different intro and gives more exposition on the Jake character. Thanks for this awesome Christmas gift Nat.
