Definitely, especially for a film insider like Nat who gets the behind-the-scenes stuff in the entertainment industry. You only need to know the stereotypes (about actors, fans, basic Sci-fi/Star Trek plots, etc.) to get the story. It's so good!

All Natalie really needs to know is this movie's premise is based loosely on the drama that happened behind the scenes between the lead William Shatner (Capt. Kirk) and the rest of the cast. Watching the series/movies isn't necessary.

I decided to rewatch it, I feel vindicated, and the opening credits aren't even over yet. It's possible people just don't like the franchise, which I understand, to me it's a stand alone movie, I'm not a fan of any of the sequels.

Damn, Highlander must really suck, it got NO love lol. To be fair it was up against some tough competition and, thinking on it more, I kinda doubt Nat would like it anyway. I love it, but that's just me, and full disclosure it's probably also the soundtrack by Queen, the same reason I love Flash Gordon, despite the fact that that is a ridiculously bad movie. Amazing casting and music, for sure, and of course the premise itself is top tier action fantasy. I love Highland more than I should based off of the quality of the movies. I won't get too detailed for fear of spoiling it if Nat does give it a watch.

Predator is a true bona fide classic and should be the winner, but I'm starting to realize that Natalie's fanbase is a bunch of kids that don't appreciate any films made before the year 2000. And they seem to only want Nat to watch films they've already seen rather than have her watching something good, like they get a thrill or sense of solidarity out of it or something.

I agree it's not a requirement. I've never watched a single episode of any of the Star Trek shows (I've seen a couple of the Chris Pine movies, but those were obviously after Galaxy Quest), but I still love the movie so, so much. It helps that I'm a giant pop culture nerd so I am well aware of a lot of Star Trek lore and convention culture without ever having watched the show or been to a con, though.

RE: Top Gun. I'll lend my hot take: the first Top Gun is unbelievably overrated and just... not very good. It's fine. But it's nothing special. Maverick, however, is an excellent movie. So I'm fine with Natalie watching the original in order to get to Maverick.

I think watching Star Trek (films or shows) isnt required to enjoy GQ but you do have to have some knowledge/awareness of the culture surrounding it. Like stuff that you see in conventions and Trekkies and how deeply they care about the lore, I would guess she's familiar enough with those tropes to get what GQ tries to do and enjoy it. I mean I do also assume that she at least knows what Star Trek is, lol, meaning at least just the basic premise, ie. A starship crew, the final frontier, space exploration, aliens, etc, typical scifi stuff that, if not for Star Trek, probably would not be know as 'typical sci-fi stuff'.

While it's not terribly necessary to have a working knowledge of Star Trek to see Galaxy Quest (the clear winner here) it does make it about ten times funnier. But it's a great flick anyway. You'll love it. Absolutely stellar casting.

Galaxy Quest is a masterpiece. Many people consider it the best Star Trek film ever made. One's consideration though, Natalie hasn't watched Star Trek. I think I'm remembering that correctly. I think she could still really enjoy it - but it is a master class satire/love story to Star Trek. Just my €0 03 on the subject. Free Guy is possibly a better bullseye, but it's hard to go wrong with any of these movies.

All are great. I voted Free Guy because I know Nat has liked RR in Deadpool, so she'll probably have a good time. Galaxy Quest is a fun ride and one of my favorite movies, but it's best enjoyed if you have a basic understanding of the Star Trek tropes, and I don't know if Nat has that. (You don't have to be a trekkie, but it helps to know that most of the cast got fed up with Shatner, that Nimoy ended up resenting his role as Spock for many years, what a redshirt is, and that Star Trek has had fans over the years that tend to go a *little* overboard. ;) ) John Wick 2 is great if you're in the mood for modern action. Top Gun is great if you're in the mood for 80s mainstream action, Highlander is great if you're in the mood for 80s cult-classic action, and Predator is great if you're in the mood for 80s musclebound Arnie action.
