Help me pick an Oscar nominee to watch!

Hi folks!

I know most of these options require an expensive movie rental right now, which is not ideal for everyone, but I'd really love to watch at least one of these before the Oscars.

I won't be watching all of them on Patreon for this reason though, as I know not everyone can spend $20 to watch a movie with me. Thanks for understanding this time!

Yes, I know The Whale isn't nominated for best picture, but I'm really curious about it so I'm still including it haha.

The rest of the movies I'm either excluding because they're not available to rent (Avatar), I've already seen them (Everything, Everywhere...), I haven't seen the first movie (Top Gun), or I'm just not that interested (Elvis).

Looking forward to seeing what wins!

Comments

Hope you could give All Quiet on the Western Front a chance. It's on Netflix and it's definitely worth it.

Roland The Gunslinger

Watch RRR

Sheikh Abdul Basit

After your done with the Oscar films I highly recommend watching Aftersun if you haven’t aleady

Alexis Leath

puss in boots the last wish is an oscar nominated movie…js…could also be a nice palette cleaner with the boys and the last of us…😗

Amalia

Honestly didn't know one of them, so look up and watched them just to rate this poll 😂

DevilsKnight2000

And het here you are replying to my three essays, which means you took the time to sit down and read through all of them lmaoooo cope and seethe

Jenny Tolls

just watch the best film of the year again, Everthing, Everywhere, All at Once

Zuhl

Brendan Fraser in a fat suit doesn’t make for a good movie. It was terrible

Nathan Smith

“Trust me little buddy, I ain’t the one butt hurt.” Then you proceed to write not one, but three entire essays about how butt hurt you are 😂You complain that people here can’t take criticism, and yet apparently your entire week was ruined just from a couple people criticizing and trolling you.

PureGonzo

The total number of votes so far is significantly lower than the last poll, so I guess there's a lot of us who don't recognise a single film here

Thoko

Umm do you not know how to read?? I was saying I’m too busy to keep track of every single movie and tv show and that comes out. Then people were talking down to me as if I’m just some marvel normie who’s too dumb and simple minded to enjoy movies with complexity. Idk why people just jumped to that lol. I’m excited for The Whale I have heard of that because I follow Brendan Fraser but I just haven’t heard about the others and that’s all I was saying. I didn’t say anything about people taking the time to comment idc about that lol it takes two minutes to write down comments.

Jenny Tolls

You have such a full life yet here you are, on patreon engaging in the comments like everybody else lol.

Austin

I shouldn't be mad since it's definitely a big achievement, but you are always the most insufferable person in Nats comment section.

FullMetal B

No it wasn’t phrased in any sort of disrespectful or dismissive way. Y’all took it that way because Nat’s core audience is extremely weak and sensitive. I’m not even tryna be mean lol I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve noticed that nobody can make an OUNCE of criticism without being scrutinized. It’s really weird lol all I said was I didn’t recognize the titles and y’all melted. Trust me little buddy, I ain’t the one butt hurt.

Jenny Tolls

I would like to see Tár - whips out promo copy like a gunslinger... (just kidding I don't have an advance copy, twirling now)

Em McG

…no, because I’m literate…

PureGonzo

Yours and Colter’s comments were phrased in a disrespectful, dismissive way, so in response, people trolled you in a disrespectful, dismissive way. This isn’t rocket science lol. Also, the only “butt hurt” person here seems to be you, as you apparently felt compelled to write an essay about it 😂

PureGonzo

I don’t understand why y’all have to be so disrespectful in the comments telling me that “most of us watch more than superhero movies 🐸☕️” Or the fast and furious comment. I’ve been watching all kinds of movies since I was a kid and I got bored with superhero movies after 2016. Idk why y’all just jumped on conclusions. All I did was point out that I didn’t recognize those movies and y’all got really butt hurt. I’m sorry I have a life and lots of friends that I can’t keep up with everything that’s coming out. Sorry I’m not an introverted dork like you guys lmao sorry I have a life 🤷🏻‍♂️

Jenny Tolls

Most of us watch more than superhero movies 🐸 ☕️

Travis

I’m determined to see Fablemans at the cinema so I’ll go for Fabelmans as it’s on Disney+ in UK 😉.

Harry Reece

Agreed!

Warren Van Wyck

i know tar is gonna lose but im sticking w cate :))))) would watch the whale for sadie sink though

Ariana Mitchell

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish! Now that you’ve seen Shrek 2… (and you don’t need to see the first Puss in Boots movie, btw)… that movie is up for some Oscars. And it’s incredible!

Warren Van Wyck

I recognize two of them and have seen one. The one that I've watched is The Whale and the other is All Quiet on the Western Front.

Logan Kerlee

All of them...maybe you should expand your horizon beyond the Fast and Furious movies

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

These are all phenomenal films

Jason Dolan

i reconogize all of them and seen all of them. Time to expand your movie genres people.

Miguel Barragan

what are you talking about. Its already on amazon

Miguel Barragan

Lmao right? Like does anyone actually recognize these titles?

Jenny Tolls

Wtf are these titles.

Colter

Apparently, I’m guessing you don’t?

Ryan

Jason Dolan

The performances in the movie all deserve nominations. I just didn't consider the sum of those performances to be worthy of best picture. I'm not saying it was a bad film.

Skippy

Love this! I always try and watch the best picture nominees cuz i'm that person, so I will gladly watch any of these pics w you! I have seen Tár and as usual, I loved Cate Blanchett's work. I hope you check that one out even if it's a loser on patreon lol.

Austin

Not interested in Elvis? I knew you were cool before but this proves it

Rico

AQOTWF is on Netflix right now. It'll be great because its not $20 to watch it once

Justine

I'm sure she will be all broken up about it

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

disagree

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

If you have even seen it and that is your opinion, then cool...but I for one do think it is one of the best 10 pictures of the year...def worth a reaction...but guess you have to try and be all "hard"

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Disagree...I thought Fraser and Sink's performances were top notch...all the films on the list are excellent but I'd rank The Whale above a few of them for sure... all opinions are good..but declarations of certainty are always interesting

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

I loved Women Talking as well...but agreed it probably isn't the best thing to react to...it would end up being a lot of talking over important dialog..

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

and you announced because we care?...don't say anything and just cancel it, you only want the attention

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

The original or the recent release or both? I liked the recent one but I wouldn't use such grand language on it...but jmo...was just curious if you really meant the recent one

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Yes it is excellent..but I love all Wes Anderson movies

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Pathetic! Fucking do it then, you wont be missed 😂

Jake w

Okay haha

Kirk Andrew Uhl II

weirdo

Merrick

none of the obove... thinking of canceling my subscription.

Johannes Roux

So you just reply to things you haven’t read? 🤦🏼‍♂️

PureGonzo

Great movie! Put it on a poll Nat!

Mastervodo

Not that it would have won the poll but Elvis was definitely interesting.

Scorpio Drake

I voted for 'Banshees' because I think it's most likely to win multiple awards, but I'm very interested in watching Brendan's performance in 'The Whale'. And Nat, as far as 'Top Gun: Maverick' is concerned it actually stands on its own pretty well; yes, there's backstory from the first movie, but they explain it pretty well in the sequel. I only just watched the original Top Gun before going to see Maverick last year and it didn't add that much. In fact, I think you'd find the original cheesy and hammy based on your The Terminator watch-along because it's even more '80s' than that movie. (I know plenty of people that love the original, but it feels like one of those 'you had to be there' movies.)

TreehouseOfJorge 4 - Resurrection

While that's true, I'd enjoy seeing a reaction to it.

Logan Kerlee

you should probably run these polls twice in the week. The first should be like this with a wide variety and the second should be focused on the top 2-3 of the previous result. This current method isn't very accurate to what people prefer the most.

Kozmo

There is a reason the Whale wasn't nominated for best picture.

Skippy

Brendan Fraser’s performance carries the whale the rest isn’t very good. Every other movie on this list is a better film overall

Maya

Based on trailers I’ve got to vote for Triangle of Sadness even though it’s clearly not going to win. A comedy always has to work twice as hard as a drama to get an Oscar nomination.

Jacob King

Elvis would actually be a fun reaction. I wasn’t interested in it at first either but eventually I watched it and it’s a lot of fun. I hope you’ll watch as many of these as possible on the channel, I know some people can’t afford to rent all these movies but they’ll still be there for them to watch later right? I just really hope we get to see your reactions to Tár, Fabelmans and Banshees specifically.

Razor Bikini

As one of the few people who have seen “Woman Talking”. It’s not a reaction movie. It’s rough & possibly triggering. Don’t get me wrong, Besides EEAAO, it is the best movie from last year.

Flick Freaks

I guess she covered that, still not gonna read the post tho.

Ryan

Uh Ryan, read the post. Lol.

PureGonzo

AQOTWF is a masterpiece.

Brandon Corcoran

Uh Nat, The Whale isn’t nominated for best picture.

Ryan

Same. And only name that I recognise at all is "All Quiet On The Western Front", but I can hardly guess what its about

Thoko

Man, I can't even participate in this. I haven't seen any one of them. But it's a wide range in eras.

Philip Davetas

Has anyone else seen Grand Budapest Hotel?

Tyree Milon

Even though The Fabelmans looks hopelessly corny, I always root for the mainstream-studio Oscar nominee-- Since I remember the days before '04 and '09 screwed up Oscars' evolution for good, and back before Critics' Circle arthouse indies took over the nominations when we couldn't think of our own anymore...

Eric Janssen

Disclosure: I have yet to see The Whale. I voted for All Quiet On The Western Front because it’s the best movie I’ve seen this year. It’s also the most brutal war movie I’ve ever seen. Not necessarily the most violent, but definitely the most affecting. There is a scene in this movie that I’ve carried with me since watching it for the first time. It haunts me. This would be a difficult movie for Nat to get through. It was difficult for me, and I have the stomach for these types of movies generally.

Martin

to be fair, TG2 is kind of just a better version of the first one. You're not missing any plot that they don't go over in the sequel (many times beating you over the head with it)

Steve J

The Whale is going to run away with this on reputation alone, surprised anything else is really close tbh. Sadly, Triangle of Sadness is way in the rear. It would be by FAR the most entertaining from a reaction perspective.

Brant Campbell

The King’s Speech won in 2010 in a field that included 127 Hours, Inception, Toy Story 3, and True Grit, but I’m not just talking about Best Picture. The Fugitive and Misery won Best Supporting Actor/Actress

Ben Wheeler

All Quiet on the Western Front is a masterpiece from start to finish. It will break you

Johnny

i see The Whale leading but it’s a shame Brendan was one of the only good things about the movie

thepooman

Banshees was my favorite movie of last year. I love anything Martin McDonagh has done.

Kate Herzig

Wow I actually haven’t heard any of these movies except for The Whale.

Jenny Tolls

I loved The Whale (what I voted for)... Women Talking...and The Fabelman's a lot... I really want to see Tár and Banshees but haven't yet

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

I haven't seen any of these :) So I'm game to watch whatever with you! :) But the Whale and Banshees are two that were on my short list of ones to watch soon so I'm going to go for Brendan Fraser support for all he went through. :)

FalcorDragon

You should bail on all these and watch the newest puss and boots instead!

Banana Hammocks

Of these bunch, banshees and the Fabelmans are my favorites and the ones I enjoyed the most in theaters. I wasn't that interested in Elvis either but I really liked the movie. Top Gun I watched without seeing the first one and I liked it and I understood most of it... Avatar I only saw it because I'm watching the 10 nominees and I didn't liked it at all. It's extremely overrated and overhyped imo. Tar I liked it but the ending ruined the movie for me overall... I still haven't watched women talking and one more because they aren't in any theaters in my country yet...

Nine Anutza

Let’s go banshees!

Kelvin

I voted for the Banshees of Inisherin, it's on HBOMax and rentable now for those without. It's from the same director and stars of In Bruges -- which I highly recommend, and it looks fantastic. I haven't seen it yet, except for Everything, Everywhere... I haven't seen any of the best picture nominees, so all of these choices would be a first watch for me.

Tony Johnson

I vote for Banshees and Fabelmans if I could

Art Tiangtham

So precious!!

Myles Away

Okay I know The Fabelmans is losing but it would be amazing if you reacted to that, because it’s one of those movies that reminds why love movies. It’s basically Spielberg semi-autobiography about his youth and how he came to love cinema. The Whale looks like it’s winning but could you consider also reacting to Fabelmans. It’s not the end ofthe world if you don’t but I would appreciate it

James Ward

AQotWF is the only one of these I've seen so I voted for that one, but i don't really care that much.

Richard Maurer

Oh wow, great poll! I know it can't happen often but I love reactions to smaller awards movies :)

Erik Stevenson

Tar was really good, and Cate Blanchette was amazing!

Joao

The academy has, since at least the sixties, picked mostly artsy films. Not because they genuinely think they're better, but because they want to appear highbrow. at least that's what the cynic in me believes. And while they often nominate popular movies, they rarely win. In the case of Return of the King they couldn't ignore Peter Jackson's amazing achievement with these three films so they gave all the awards to RotK, even though the other two were equally deserving.

Richard Maurer

You guys are voting for the whale because Brandon Fraser. And not even watched the movie…. Please the only good thing about the movie is the acting…

Joao

Nah the 1980s-1990s were full of broad appeal movies.

Joshua Kon

Last year a Light Hearted movie won best pictute. There are a lot of light hearted movies missing from the poll that got nominated too

Joshua Kon

This poll needs an option for "I'd Rather You Didn't Watch Any of These for This Channel". I don't even have any interest in seeing The Whale despite my boy Brendan being in it.

Myoclonic Jerk

Haven't you heard? The only emotion capable of depth is Sorrow. Basing your art on it shows you're a sensitive artiste. 😁

Myoclonic Jerk

You mean the ONLY time???

Daniel Vezina

I have not even HEARD of any of these movies, except for The Whale because of Brendon. Gotta vote for that one.

Mastervodo

Not a single one on the list that's even slightly interesting

ButtyOh

Totally in agreement, such good movie.

Daniel Vezina

If I were you I would be very interested in elvis. Excellent excellent film

Ross Stewart

I really miss when movies with broad appeal like LOTR won Academy Awards

Ben Wheeler

i litteraly never heard of any of those :D i let people vote who know them

Gilbert

I haven't been able to bring myself to watch "All Quiet..." yet because I have some war movie fatigue. I also haven't seen "The Fablemans" yet, but want to. The rest of these are all very good. I'm voting for "Women Talking" because I think it's really underappreciated.

Delford Chaffin

I’m so sad triangle of sadness isn’t winning. that movie was so funny and a great commentary

Maddie

Banshees of Inisherin is really fantastic, but not sure I can watch it again. But I do think you would really appreciate it.

Tay Schumaker

Gonna chime in here to again recommend Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, which is nominated for best animated film and, in my opinion, deserves to win it.

G. T. Blackwell

Gonna chime in here to again recommend Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, which is nominated for best animated film and in my opinion, deserves to win it.

G. T. Blackwell

Brendan Fraser is the only right pick here

Danishprince

Even if it's too expensive for many people to rent now, but you want to watch it now, you should still do the watch-along and post it anyway, because eventually it will become more affordable for the rest of the patrons.

Thomas Yanez

A lot of these are a tough watch which speaks volumes of the kind of movies that get nominated. God forbid a light-hearted movie get a nomination. The Fabelmans is probably the least depressing movie on this list.

adrianR31

I would have voted for Elvis lol great performance by Austin Butler amazing!

dieselbeast

Literally dont know what most of these movies are about let alone havent seen any of them, heard the banshees movie was pretty good today on reddit tho

Edward Brink

Thanks for an interesting poll today Nat. I think only one of these is available in the UK at the moment, so it may be a reaction that I will watch when I can. I really enjoyed the Elvis movie. Voting for The Fabelmans as it was such a great movie. Have an awesome Wednesday Nat 💛

Darryl Low

All Quiet on the Western Front was so good and so haunting!

Jenny Chalek

Well I didn't vote for the Whale out of personal interest in All Quiet but film festivals kept giving Brendan Fraser standing ovations, so, sure let's try something new!

Jacketb

All quiet on the western front is a pretty brutal film, but it would be an interesting watch

larshans

Tar just became available to watch on peacock 😁

Taylor Orwick

Elvis was actually a really good movie

Kent Frasure

Having seen all these movies I actually think woman talking would not only be the best movie of the bunch but bring the best reaction overall. I loved The Whale but its so heavy and uncomfortable idk how fun it would be to watch in reaction format.
