2023-03-08 15:42:28 +0000 UTCI've never watched a full episode of Star Trek, but if Nat does decide to watch it, I hope there aren't many episodes. My current impression about Star Trek is that it is potentially something that is a bit dated and perhaps something that was overrated in its time as happens with a lot of shows/films. But maybe I'll be proven wrong.

2023-03-04 16:04:39 +0000 UTCI’ve only seen this movie I think once before, but I’ll watch anything with Sigourney Weaver in it ❤️😂 Also you’d watch Star Trek but not The Clone Wars? 😭 Nat, pls!

2023-02-27 21:31:10 +0000 UTCNatalie, I've got to say it - you're my top favorite reactor. You're damn fun and I really appreciate the reactions that you do on here! You're awesome. :)

2023-02-27 19:38:46 +0000 UTCI'm so happy you watched this. I watched this so many times with my family as a kid, it was great to return to it. Hilarious movie, so bittersweet to see Alan Rickman again.
Riolkin
2023-02-27 01:18:27 +0000 UTCYes, as many of your patrons (myself included) pointed out in the comments there's no need to watch any Trek first. Now, that being said at the least the original and next generation series, as well as most of the movies, are certainly worth watching at some point.
Richard Maurer
2023-02-26 19:49:51 +0000 UTCThe thing about Shatner is that he's neither as great as his fans believe nor as bad as his detractors believe. The truth, as is often the case, lies somewhere between the opposing views.

2023-02-26 19:39:19 +0000 UTCRegarding Tony Shaloub's character being so chill the entire time, apprently there was a scene of him getting high in the bathroom before beaming up to the ship which was cut to get the PG-13 rating. It explains so much about his performance.
Leigh P
2023-02-26 10:48:23 +0000 UTCOriginally this movie was meant to be a hard PG-13 or even R. There’s a lot of ARD over cursing, and Tony Shaloub was supposed to be a stoner burn out. There’s a deleted scene where he’s smoking weed before they get beamed up which is why he wants change for the vending machines and is eating the whole film. He has the munchies. Also people miss this a lot but his characters last name on the show is Chen and he squints and wears eyeliner. It was a commentary on white actors playing roles of POC characters. Now he just seems super chill and out of it but he’s playing it stoned.

2023-02-26 04:10:28 +0000 UTCI rented this to watch for the first time and I enjoyed it a lot. But I do have one criticism. I know it is a comedy film, but I wish they were a bit more logically consistent. Maybe I missed something but it suddenly became incredibly easy to avoid having mines (which are really missiles) hit your ship, even when they decide to fly closer to them deliberately. I know the guy "practiced" to avoid hitting things, but practice becomes irrelevant if you deliberately negate that practice by flying closer. But my main issue is that earlier in the movie, the ship stays mostly in one piece after many dozens or even hundreds of mines hit it. But at the end, the enemies ship is completely destroyed by what seems to be fewer mines. I think this mostly bothered me because it was the conclusion of the film and felt like the writer's cheated me on the ending.

2023-02-25 23:55:44 +0000 UTCI don't often spend the money to rent a movie on Amazon to watch a reaction but I did on this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good job.

2023-02-25 22:59:31 +0000 UTCStoked to finally watch this reaction! So glad you ignored the people saying you needed to watch dozens of hours of Star Trek to enjoy this movie.

2023-02-25 18:44:54 +0000 UTCThat, plus it's a tie just because of jokesters changing their choice afterwards to _make_ it a tie. It's a meme.

2023-02-25 16:24:14 +0000 UTCYeah, man. This is a great flick even though I voted for JW2 in the polls where they tied. But I voted for GQ in the one where it won. Yeah, STAR TREK is an epic feat. I've seen all the movies and loved TNG, but I just never got to finish the spinoffs. I was living out of country and state when all the spinoff series were coming out and they keep making more. I want to see them, but there's just so much content at this point I don't know if I will ever catch up.

2023-02-25 15:20:17 +0000 UTCOh yeah. I knew that but had forgotten it.

2023-02-25 13:43:31 +0000 UTCThe poll is a tie now, but nat takes results after like 24 hours. I dunno why she doesnt put a time limit on the polls for a clear undisputed winner but thats her decision.

2023-02-25 13:12:13 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to TV, though, he's probably best known as Keith Mars on the series Veronica Mars. One of the all-time great TV dads. He's fantastic.
Jeff K
2023-02-25 13:11:19 +0000 UTCWait a minute. In the intro Nat says that Galaxy Quest "won" the previous poll and that she's watching an Oscar movie next week. But that poll was a draw. We should be watching Ex Machina next week
Thoko
2023-02-25 12:52:58 +0000 UTCEnrico Colantoni (Mathesar) is a very good actor. He had a good run as one of the regular actors on the sitcom Just Shoot Me and had a role on Person of Interest that really showed off his skills.

2023-02-25 12:46:02 +0000 UTCThis is a great movie in it's own right! Excellent cast and not having seen any Star Trek won't make much difference if any. I love both this and all things Trek!
Ben Curran
2023-02-25 10:51:24 +0000 UTCI'm certain i can't have been the only one That pointed out the Star Trek connection. Many people call Galaxy Quest the best Star Trek film ever made. Maybe not but it's certainly up there. I feel like my comment about Star Trek familiarity kicked off a sequence of unintended consequences. What i may not have actually said in my comment was i'm sure she'll love it anyway. And now - hopefully fairly soon -we'll get to see what happens when you see these in the opposite order! Will she recognize Galaxy Quest tropes in Star Trek? (That's a rhetorical question, Natalie didn't miss Sigourney Weaver's obvious f-bomb the way i did when i saw this in theaters!) I've said it before, and i see no reason to stop - Tony Shalhoub is an INTERGALACTIC Treasure! Please don't miss The Fabulous Miss Maisel - if only for his brilliance as the titular characters father!
—thoughtstorms—Keith—
2023-02-25 10:38:36 +0000 UTCJust to clarify the Star Trek it parodies is mostly the TV series, not the movies and especially not the new remake movies that are out. The genius it it is more of an homage to those old sci-fi series and the fans that still love them, than a mocking parody. You don’t have to see Star Trek to see the tropes and stereotypes. This is why it still endures. Also fun fact: the NTE in the ship number NTE-3120 for the Protector stands for Not The Enterprise.
Wild_Lee_Coyote
2023-02-25 10:34:08 +0000 UTCFun reaction Nat. I'm curious to see where you'll start if you do react to some Star Trek. If it's the movies, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is the first one, but be warned, it's generally considered pretty slow and boring, but the films improve a lot afterwards.
Keith Jacobsen
2023-02-25 10:19:31 +0000 UTCI love this movie. As others have said, Tony Shalhoub's character (Fred Kwan / Tech Sergeant Chen) was originally more obviously shown to be stoned for much of the events of the movie, but had to be mostly cut out. Another fun fact about the character that isn't explicitly pointed out is that "Fred Kwan" is, let's say, less Asian than his character in the "show" and so that's why he does a very extreme eye-squint whenever someone says his name to, I suppose, bridge the gap between a Chinese character being played by a Lebanese-American actor. This is a reference to, among other things, how Scotty from Star Trek was played by Canadian actor James Doohan and other famous examples of Hollywood's casting of people to play other ethnicities. This was also apparently Justin Long and Rainn Wilson's film debuts.
CheeseRepair
2023-02-25 08:30:45 +0000 UTCIt's more about what it's like to be an aged type-cast Star Trek actor, rather than being particularly relevant to anything you'd need to watch Star Trek for. Also the big joke with Tony Shalhoub's character is that he was high the whole time, and the paper bag he always had is where he kept pulling all his snacks from.
Kevin Bartelen
2023-02-25 08:00:34 +0000 UTCThis is one of those movies that is fantastic, then you hear about how the "suits" got involved and messed around with stuff, making it worse, so it could have been even better. For instance, they felt that since it was sci-fi and a reference to Trek, it had to be PG, so that was why you saw Sigourney Weaver say "Fuck that!" while you heard "Screw that!" (BTW, there is another edit, during the convention scene, when Daryl Mitchell said "You're so full of it" what he actually said was "You're so full of shit!" They basically viewed sci-fi as the realm of male teams instead of factoring in the adults who grew up with it. That also explains the part that everyone (including you) asks about. Why is Weaver's outfit showing more towards the end of the show. There is a cut scene that showed her trying to seduce an alien. That was considered inappropriate (Supposedly, one of the other aliens correctly points out that from their perspective , it would be like zoophiilia, although in sci-fi shows this happens all the time). Two cuts scenes with Tech Sargent Chen would have been more enlightening. Supposedly, he had some kind of "special dessert" early in the show (IOW, he was high, hence his constant snacking). Another showed him quizzing the other engineers, as if he was a professor, but in reality he was getting information, which is why he seemed to know how things worked when explaining that things were going wrong. When they originally were trying to cast this, they didn't want anyone with sci-fi experience, but decided to waive that when Sigourney Weaver tried out for it. One other funny thing about this. In a way, this was higher budget than Trek. There is a common meme about Trek where, whenever the ship is under attack and they have to move, the actors have to show it by moving themselves (SNL once did a skit where the cast was doing "evasive maneuvers and then Akroyd, as Spock, says "Captain, I'm exhausted", However, this movie actually had a set that was able to move with hydraulics.

2023-02-25 07:23:05 +0000 UTCI love getting to experience someone's discovery of this movie almost as much as watching it. I think the reason so many people (myself included) thought that Star Trek knowledge was essential was because it frequently taps in to that Trekkie vibe, but nowadays there are SO many fandoms with a similar dynamic that you don't need to have seen Star Trek specifically to get it, plus you've seen Firefly, Star Wars, and other similar content so you've picked up a ton of sci-fi tropes since starting your channel, I'm guessing. That said, it really is a sort of love letter to Star Trek and the fans, so much so that the "ST:TNG" cast saw it and loved it. Trivia: On the DVD version, one of the "language tracks" is Thermian... you can actually watch the entire movie with literally everyone speaking Thermian. It was fun for about ten minutes, but then you gotta turn it off because it starts to grate.

2023-02-25 07:05:37 +0000 UTCI've seen this maybe 3 or 4 times before, but not in a good while, so it was fantastic to rewatch it with you. And, as with many films/shows rewatched after a while, so many more of the cast were so much more familiar to me from other things since (Sam Rockwell for example. far more likeable than he is in Iron Man 2), and overall, probably l enjoyed it more than I have before. just a genuinely great movie. I'd not complain if it does ever get a sequel or TV series, but also don't mind if it doesn't. Stands very well on its own. Also, I recommend reading the Star Trek actors' reactions to the film on the movie's Wikipedia page.

2023-02-25 04:49:35 +0000 UTCGreat job, Nat! Totally forgot Sam Rockwell was in this as well LOL! Also, don't know if anyone mentioned it but Amazon was about to revive and make a sequel to GQ years ago however stop due to Alan Rickman passing away in 2017. There's actually some chatter that Simon Pegg is looking to make TV series though.

2023-02-25 03:03:01 +0000 UTCYou need to watch Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary. It's included with Prime. You want to talk meta - there are now Galaxy Quest fan conventions. It has it's own cult following. Yes, she originally said "F that" but they redid the scene in part to get a PG rating, but purposely left the video unchanged. There was no R rated version released. I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I always felt like this is a AAA quality "B movie." Just outstanding in every regard, even the cheesy bits are perfectly cheesy.
John
2023-02-25 02:00:49 +0000 UTCI had SO MUCH FUN watching this with you! xD I was laughing all throughout this movie. Yeah, you definitely don't need Star Trek knowledge to enjoy this but having that knowledge definitely adds to it. I'm very happy that you had a great time watching. :)

2023-02-25 01:47:08 +0000 UTCTruly I don't think anyone needs to know ANYTHING about Star Trek at all to enjoy this movie--this coming from a die-hard trekker (trekkie/trekker interchangeable imho) watching Star Trek Original since about 1970, age 5-6! It really is more a parody of the convention phenomenon and they used a made-up show that was "kind of like Star Trek" to illustrate. It's so much fun. I enjoyed watching you get such a kick out of this (more so than other creators I've seen watch this!) and also I haven't watched you for a minute so of course your HAIR IS LONGER!!! lol...... I love it! Stay Golden Nattie! P.S. afterthought: You mentioned about the Glenlivet "He has good taste..." Sometime try Glenmorangie Nectar D'or, if you haven't already. SMOOTH!

2023-02-25 00:34:17 +0000 UTCI vaguely remember this interview from like a hundred years ago. I think he said it was some ritual the priests performed only once a year and used the gesture and he adopted it for the Vulcan salute. I also remember that only about 70% of people could do the salute because of dexterity. T'Pau had to have her hands preset in the salute because she was one of the 30% that couldn't manage to do the salute unaided.
Essero Eson
2023-02-25 00:29:37 +0000 UTCI enjoy Galaxy Quest but the premise holds so much potential that the film never really capitalises on. As a whole i think it would have been funnier if it was less plotty.
Opti_Frog
2023-02-25 00:22:12 +0000 UTC2:00 The Vulcan "salute" actually comes from a Jewish blessing according to Leonard Nimoy. He saw them making a similar hand gesture during a blessing and modified it to use as a salutation in Star Trek. It's used as a way to say hello or goodbye and wish someone well. The typical salutation with it is "Live long and prosper" and the reply is "Peace and long life." 19:00 In the theatrical release the film started in 1:85 aspect ratio and at 19:00 when the ship's doors open and reveals him in space, it switched to Cinemascope 2.35:1. It was such a huge visual impact.

2023-02-24 23:06:44 +0000 UTCThere's also a deleted scene where Sigourney Weaver tried to seduce an alien, which is why her boobs are out in the last half.

2023-02-24 21:35:41 +0000 UTCKline is a fantastic comic actor but Allen fits this part like a glove. Can’t see anyone else hitting the mark like him. Everyone in the movie in fact is cast perfectly.
Ortizmo2000
2023-02-24 21:26:39 +0000 UTCWeaver's overdubbed "fuck" is not the only thing changed. They deleted several scenes to get the PG rating. All of the "obvious" times when Shalhoub was smoking out were also deleted. That his character was high throughout was still evident. He had the munchies and was always snacking on something ;)
David Guin
2023-02-24 21:24:25 +0000 UTCThis movie is so fun! If you like Sam Rockwell, Mr Right is an action comedy with Anna Kendrick. Not gonna spoil anything , but its super weird and fun.

2023-02-24 20:03:07 +0000 UTCThis is the greatest Star Trek (or SciFi) parody of all time. The only movie fit to mention in the same breath is Paul (2011), a mash-up of Close Encounters, ET, X-files, with references to dozens of other space-based movies within. With Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Seth Rogan and Kirsten Wiig. Also Sigourney Weaver again.

2023-02-24 19:25:10 +0000 UTCThis is my favorite movie of all time and it's so awesome to watch people react. There is no other rated version. The movie was originally shot as a rated R but they converted it to a rated PG. I think one thing you missed was that Gwen didn't just repeat the computer because she wanted to. The computer was actually designed to only speak with her which is why when the commander tried to ask about extra spheres, the computer didn't respond. So happy to see more people getting to experience the awesomeness of this movie.

2023-02-24 19:15:07 +0000 UTCI love this movie so much, and I think everyone is great in it. That said: every time I watch it I think about the fact that Kevin Kline almost played the Tim Allen role, and I wonder what that would have looked like.

2023-02-24 19:04:30 +0000 UTCIt is more of a parody of the old tv series than the movies. Another great Star Trek-like show is The Orville.

2023-02-24 18:58:03 +0000 UTCCan't believe she didn't put together the fact Tony Shaloub constantly had the munchies with his chillness, lol
Chris Cooper
2023-02-24 18:56:11 +0000 UTCTony Shalhoub's character in the origial script was a massive pothead.. To get the rating they wanted, they had to cut all that out, but some of it is still in there. You see whisps of smoke and other tells. That's why he's so "chill." ;)

2023-02-24 18:35:42 +0000 UTCShould do a poll of "Oscar Movies" to watch, but it's all Oscar Issac movies
SmokeAndACoffee
2023-02-24 18:35:05 +0000 UTCOk one more note: the reason that Tony Shaloub's character is always so chill is because he's constantly high. (They confirmed that in the oral history of the movie.)

2023-02-24 17:57:48 +0000 UTCOh! For anyone looking to watch this who doesn't want to rent it, if you happen to subscribe to Starz, it's available as a VOD on there. I wouldn't have known except I just re-subscribed to Starz yesterday for the new season of Party Down. Also, regarding the Oscar movie: that's why I'm hoping Banshees of Inisherin ends up winning (I haven't checked the poll lately). It's available on HBO/HBO Max. One more note so I don't wind up spamming the comments: years ago, they did a poll of best Star Trek movies at a Trek convention, and the fans voted Galaxy Quest as, like, the 7th best Star Trek movie ever made even though it has no connection other than being a loving parody/homage. The fans and even the Star Trek cast(s) adore it. I recall a story where I believe it was Jonathan Frakes who convinced Patrick Stewart to go see it, and Stewart was reluctant because he thought it would be making fun of them, but Stewart ended up loving it so much he went back to watch it multiple times in the theater.
Jeff K
2023-02-24 17:33:18 +0000 UTCI'm really glad Nat enjoyed it as much as she did. Especially because it really sticks it to the "akshully, you have to watch Star Trek first... Reee" crowd.

2023-02-24 17:29:57 +0000 UTCRegarding the CNY accent: my brother's name is Matt, so any time we'd go to Syracuse when we were kids to visit (and obviously, still later in life when we both went to SU - me for undergrad, him for law school - but we grew up in Vermont, while my family is almost entirely from Syracuse), it was always so weird and amusing to me how my aunts and uncles would pronounce his name (almost like "Myatt"). It's almost like a Minnesota-adjacent accent. Anyway, that was a really long and pointless note from my life brought on exclusively by one throwaway Natalie comment on the Upstate New York accent. You're welcome, everyone.
Jeff K
2023-02-24 17:29:11 +0000 UTC"I truly did not expect to LOVE IT as much as I did!" I think was everyone's reaction to seeing this movie. It's soooo good and very underrated with a fantastic cast. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

2023-02-24 17:06:27 +0000 UTCHappy Feature Friday Nat. Haven't seen this movie since it was out, so I look forward to watching it again with you today. I remember the basic premise, that's about it 😊 Laughing Nattie is so much better to watch than crying Nattie 😊 This was such a fun reaction today. So enjoyable and the perfect end to the week. Thanks for all your awesome work this week Nat. Looking forward to the stream tonight 💛
