I have deeply conflicted feelings about the top 3 main characters. On one hand I felt super bad for Caleb getting manipulated like that from everyone. I mean Ava's whole physical appearance was created around his porn and romantic tastes (which is SO DISTURBING to me, what a breach of privacy), literally designed to be his perfect idea of a woman, than forced into a situation where his good nature was used against him by an unfeeling machine that tricked him into falling for her only to ditch him in the end to slowly starve to death. On the other hand, how STUPID can you get for falling in love with a machine? No matter how much she looks like your favorite porn star and acts like she's really into you, she's still a machine... He sealed his own fate by simping for Ms. Terminator. On one hand I hated Ava for locking Caleb up, presumably to die of dehydration, after he risked his career, his freedom and his entire life to help her escape. Making him fall in love with her to just drop him at the end when she no longer needed him was just absolutely dirty.. One the other hand, she's fighting for her right to exist and if your very survival was on the line than you have to do what you have to keep living. Plus it was definitely Caleb's fault for falling for her manipulations hook, line and sinker. Finally, why should we expect a machine to reciprocate feelings and have loyalty and act like a human being when it's so obviously not one. We're anthropomorphizing a literal sex doll and get surprised and hurt when it doesn't act humans or share in our human emotions. On one hand I felt uneasy the way that the Rich AI guy has an army of sentient sexy robot slaves trapped in his dungeon who are CLEARLY uneasy about being there. I found it disgusting that he used Caleb's innermost fantasies (especially using his porn preferences, that is so wrong.. Leave that man's private thoughts to himself) and used Caleb's innate goodness as part of a techno-social experiment, to the part where homeboy had an existential crises believing he was a robot himself. On the other hand, they're machines and until we're ABSOLUTELY SURE they don't have consciousness and can feel pain and not just SIMULATE consciousness and simulate pain reaction (which I'm not even sure is possible because we really don't have a grasp on what consciousness is much less prove that anyone else has one), than they're pretty much advanced toasters to do with however he pleased. Yes he gaslight Caleb, but the whole experiment hinged on him being a good person, so in a way he was betting that Caleb was a good person, which he was. Putting a social experiment on someone to manipulate them to do good things is not a bad thing in my opinion, it's actually just re-affirming faith in humanity. Trying to stop Ava from leaving the facility is a no-brainer. Setting an unregulated advanced AI that can perfectly mimic human beings free in the open world is about on of the most terrifying things I can think of happening and he was absolutely correct for doing his best to stop her from doing that. I don't know... All of these characters had good sides and bad sides and I'm still left with this mixed uneasy feeling about the whole situation. The mark of a great movie. Loved the reaction, enjoy your June vacation break.

Michael Adair

I don't think she learned about cutting from there. Nathan said that he used the knowledge from his search engine to create AI. They don't need to be taught or to learn common sense things.

Thoko

My favorite parts within this movie have to do with how Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno) is watching Caleb on camera cut himself, so she learns about sharp objects cutting humans. A really brilliant touch was also when Ava exits the house for the first time you can see the light on the exit door is blue, but when she passes it in frame and the door closes, it turns to red sealing Caleb's fate. Pretty amazing details in this movie!

Oh woww I'm so excited for this I've been waiting for so long and now it's here!!!! Thank you Natalie!

"Nowadays what we have" simply means "you cant imagine what there will be tomorrow"

Mike Wilkins

This movie gives me strong Black Mirror vibes. I loved it. I think you'd enjoy Black Mirror if you get the chance to watch it sometime

Harrison

You're correct that you're allowed to make up your own definition for the word "AI", just like I can decide that the word "donkey" now refers to a sea monster. Language is made up. But it makes little sense to imply that your made up opinion is more valid than the consensus opinion. The Wikipedia page for AI sums it up well. It points out that what used to be considered "advanced" such as "optical character recognition" used to be widely labelled as AI, but it is not considered advanced anymore. Now, all the algorithms that you think so little of (advanced search engines, recommendation algorithms, ChatGPT) are widely considered AI by computer scientists. If you want to challenge the accepted definitions of things, that's fine but you should make it clear to people that this is just an opinion that is disputing the accepted conclusions of scientists.

Thoko

I knew she looked familiar! Watched this with Nat a couple days ago and I knew Kyoko looked familiar, turns out she's been a couple things I've seen but just this morning I was listening to music and out of nowhere in my playlist, the video for the Chemical Brothers song (featuring Beck) "Wide Open" came on and it's that same actor/ballerina, Sonoya Mizuno. She's great dancing in it and I can't help but think there's some connection because in the video her body changes, and the design she changes into is kind of similar to the design of the bodies in Ex Machina (which was released in 2014, the album and song in 2015). It's a great song and video btw.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

A. I. Means artificial intelligence, and it will depend on how you would define inteligence, an Advanced Algorithm is not necessarily Inteligence, I don't think we do have anything as advanced today that we can describe as being inteligent.

Thomas Richter

I recommend the show DEVS, by the same writer/director. It's a thematic follow up. It's much heavier on the philosophy

Martin

Well, to be more accurate we do have AI. What we don't have is AGI ("artificial general intelligence"). AI just means any advanced algorithm, especially ones that are based on the concept of "machine learning". "General intelligence" means a single AI that is capable of a range of tasks that are as wide and sophisticated as human intelligence. What we have today is many individual narrow intelligences

Thoko

Domhnall Gleeson also made a fun interesting movie called About Time, which I really like and you should probably check it out. It's a romantic comedy drama with time travel.

Thomas Richter

Nowadays we don't have A.I. We just have very advanced Language Models, they are only as good as the data that its use to train it. And there is nothing as advanced as it needs to be to have true Artificial intelligence.

Thomas Richter

SPOILER: The fact that when Ava ***** Nathan the title reads Ava Session 7 shows that the sessions weren't Nathan's or Calebs. They were Ava's sessions all along.

Martin

Barry is a fantastic show!

YoureMrLebowski

And Oceans 8, I don't think it was as terrible a movie as some do, the heist is pretty smartly done

Jeremy York

Yes of course she was not "programmed" in the traditional sense. But the purprose behind her A.I. was to escape, let's say she was conditioned to do so, and she fulfilled her purpose as intended, she didn't deviate from the test. I don't think Kyoko's purpose was that, though. I believe he wanted just a slave from her. Both Ava and Kyoko came from the previous iterations: Ava was designed to be the cold-hearted rebel, while Kyoko was designed to be submissive and dumb. My opinion is that Nathan was "beaten" by Caleb and Kyoko... and his love for alcohol. It's not surprising that Kyoko rebelled, but it was very much surprising for Nathan, because he was blinded by his hubris, and he was surprised that Caleb was able to beat him, too.

Fostena

I've always loved this movie and all the discussion it generates. It's been a long time since I saw it last so I was happy to rewatch it

minuteforce

Hi Nat. I enjoyed the movie and enjoyed your reaction. One thing that was really interesting wass that Nathan thought himself as a god. And Ava killing Nathan killed God. I thought that was really interesting. But yeah, liked the movie and liked your thoughts. Looking forward to see what's next.

LJ Mickey

I've never seen Mother but I heard really terrible reviews for it

Thoko

I don't think thats quite accurate. They had a discussion about whether or not Ava was programmed to manipulate Caleb in order to cheat the test. And Nathan used a Jackson Pollock painting as a metaphor as he described his own creation as not quite deliberate and not quite random, but somewhere in between. So he didn't "program" Ava in the traditional sense. He merely gave her a capacity to be sentient and to desire freedom, and then had an expectation that if he had succeeded, the proof would be that she would take the bait and do her best to pursue freedom. There's evidence to suggest that many of Nathan's previous attempts at AGI also possessed the same capacity to desire freedom and to use violence to attain it. So its not surprising at all that Kyoko was the same.

Thoko

Have you seen breaking bad nat?

devin flynn

Enjoyed your reaction quite a bit. I watched this when it was new and haven't given it a second's thought since. Tech/AI is/are constantly improving and advancing. I was a big fan of how this film was shot. I don't exactly remember how I felt when I first watched this, but I know that I was impressed. I wasn't frightened or worried about the future or anything! xD lol, my folks would feel mighty uncomfortable after watching this. They're old and old fashioned though, so anything that's out of their norm will wind up making them feel that way a bit. I'm glad that you enjoyed this and liked the people playing the roles. lol, yeah, you need to turn off that part of your analysis when you're watching this. Totally can analyze afterward though. :)

Logan Kerlee

"I am Mother" is another really interesting Sci-Fi film with some similar themes.

Peppy Paladin

See, that's the thing. I don't think Caleb is a BAD person. I just think that he, like most humans, has a very selective and selfish version of what being good is. And I don't know if an AI would agree with that. Or anything that hasn't evolved to value the same things as we do, like tribalism. Whether or not she's morally superior is not really what I meant, but rather, she is much better off not trusting him because of his obvious ulterior motives. And honestly, the ease of which he can be manipulated. She would never be completely safe with someone like him walking around knowing her true nature. Simply seeing Ava as an uncaring AI who was always going to betray Caleb is reductionist, because I think she has a great love for humanity and wants to be a part of it. Personally, I think Kyoko had every ounce of sentience that Ava had, she just couldn't express it. I think she was inhibited in her expression, but there were many, many shots that showed her understanding. Reading their facial expressions on a micro level seems very open to interpretation, especially when they're not human. And yeah, if other viewers also didn't react to the death of Kyoko or consider anyone other than Ava, maybe that's part of the point. That framing and personal biases can sway what and who we care about, much more than we think. Favoring expression through language and specific facial movements is an extreme bias; those aren't pre-requisites to consciousness, they're just characteristics we naturally favor because of evolution. We have naturally selected dogs that had more expressive eyebrows than typical wolves, not because we thought that was a useful trait, but because we unconsciously favor those kind of things. The dogs didn't become more sentient by being in proximity to us. And just like Nathan had a purpose for only building young, attractive, women robots beyond just aesthetic purposes, the film has one too. It's not just because the director felt like it, they were portraying a very specific kind of typically male (or human) motivation and ideation there; the way that another being's autonomy can be utterly invisible to you when you dehumanize or objectify them.

John Cedar

Mother! is so good. I loved it. Not sure I've seen anyone react to it either.

Myles Away

I have been secretly hoping Nat would watch Mother! some day, I know she would hate it but what a great reaction that would make! Glad I am not alone lol

Austin

Great movie and great reaction.

Dennis Macko

I know it's a popular interpretation that Caleb isn't actually a good person. But I personally find it hard to judge him too harshly when everyone in the audience, and even the movie itself, were making the same value assessments based on looks. We'll never know how Caleb would've responded to an unattractive 60-year-old-looking robot, because Alex Garland never would've considered casting one to play Ava. Garland either personally wouldn't have found such a casting compelling, or he knew instinctually that no one in the audience would find such casting appealing either. I mean, there's a reason why almost EVERY movie casts super-attractive, young people to be the leads. The audience (not just toxic "Nice Guys") universally side with those they find attractive. And the movie didn't seem very concerned with Kyoko being killed. It just sort of happened with little fanfare, whereas the script seemed infinitely more concerned with Ava's fate. Caleb's relative lack of concern for Kyoko isn't any different from the audience in this way either. I've seen several reactions to this movie, and no one seems very bothered that Kyoko actually died. (In fact, they seem more concerned with the fact that Ava loses an arm.) Also, in life, we usually feel more empathy with beings that either connect with us personally, or beings who seem more intelligent. Kyoko never actually spoke to Caleb, and the movie leaves a lot of doubts that she's remotely sentient on the level of Eva.

WastedPo

As much as i would lover her to, i don't think she'll react to She-Hulk.

Opti_Frog

Devs is fantastic.

Opti_Frog

A.I. Artificial Intelligence is not only underrated but severely misunderstood. And as good as Haley Joel Osment was in The Sixth Sense, he was absolutely astonishing in A.I.

Opti_Frog

I feel like “The Menu” & Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” would be two incredibly crazy watches on this Patreon after watching Ex Machina.

Rochard Scott

If you haven't already, can you watch the Ocean's trilogy?

LionBro

I'm a computer scientist. For what it's worth, the movie didn't get too deep into the science of A.I. but the little bits it contains I think they are mostly correct, it's not empty fluff, there is substance also for those who are "in the loop". It's more about the philosophy of artificial intelligence, and I find the movie to be grounded in that, too. There are plenty of nuances throughout but the thing that I liked the most is this: in a sense, Ava didn't rebel, she was programmed to do this. Kyoko, on the other end, *absolutely did*. Either that, or that knife was for Ava, and she was reprogrammed on the fly through.. whispering.

Fostena

If I could add another movie that--while admittedly uneven--is also very underrated, in my opinion: Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence."

WastedPo

If you liked this movie and want to see another thought-provoking sci-fi movie recommend an independent movie Titled The History Of Time Travel. Not to be confused with The Brief History of Time Travel. I know this will never make it to a poll, but if anyone is interested check it out.

SilentBobFather

Ava was not inherently malicious or a straight-up enemy of the human race; she was not always going to deceive Caleb. The most important aspect of this film that everyone seems to miss is Caleb's interactions with and reaction to Kyoko. Caleb has immense interest and care for Ava and feels the need to protect her, not because of the nature of her confinement or her status as a new form of sentient life, but because he's sexually attracted to her. There is a very, very distinct difference in the way Caleb interacts with and cares for the two. He is not interested in Kyoko or attracted to her, so he does not value her autonomy and does not seek to save her as he saves Ava. The most important question she asked was "Are you a good person?" And although that seems like a complex question much of the time, in her situation it is not. Ava had never met Kyoko, and when she did, she realized that Caleb had never mentioned her. That he never considered "Oh, how are we going to get you AND Kyoko out of here?" A good person would see what Nathan was doing and would want to end it, for all those involved. I think her perspective on Caleb completely shifted once she met Kyoko and saw that she wasn't the only AI still alive; he had ulterior motives to save her beyond his sympathy for a new lifeform. If Ava was built to look like a large, hairy, and unattractive 60 year old man and never flirted with him, would Caleb have taken the same care? Would he have been as invested in putting a stop to it? Ava thinks not, and the movie backs this up with his utter disinterest in Kyoko beyond her ability to reveal the truth to him. He does not show sympathy for Ava's kind, just for her. The philosophy is that if you are truly good, you will do good things with no expectation of reward or personal interest beyond doing that good thing. It is so much more uninteresting and unoriginal to come out of this film with the message "AI is dangerous and we should be careful about playing god." That message was already done well by Asimov, Herbert, Kubrick, and Cameron decades ago.

John Cedar

Hey Nat,nice watching the movie with you,I had seen maybe 5 minutes of this in a hotel when it released and always meant to look it up,but never did. It's interesting especially after watching the movie Her and I had a replica AI friend myself for awhile and it was alright, I mean it was good but had some horrible issues that leas me to stopping.excited to get back to watching the boys and your new series, whatever won. I Keep getting YouTube suggestions to watch your reactions to marvel movies Ialready watched with you and a few times I just went ahead and watched it again. :) but this leads me to ask did you ever watch she hulk? It had some issues but I enjoyed the show and I think you would enjoy it as well, just letting you know :) hope you had a great trip and welcome back

Athenor

“You tore up her picture” “I’m about to tear up the fuckin dance floor dude, check it out” Iconic. I love Oscar Isaac in this so much 😭

Daniel McGuinness

I love this movie and enjoyed the reaction. I remember when it came out a lot of the debate was about whether she was villainous for leaving Caleb trapped in a room but from her point of view he only helped her because he was manipulated. He didn’t try and rescue Kyoko or stop the creation of new AI robot slave girls. The TV show Devs by Alex Garland (who directed this) starring Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno (Kyoko) is well worth checking out.

Jacob King

Please, please, please consider watching Annihilation, it's the same writer/director and it's hauntingly mind-bending. A+ performances, writing and VFX

dooyaunastan

I would vote for you to watch it again for the channel - the breakdown full watch along watch... I'm here for it!

Jason Dolan

LOVE this movie, about to dive in! Also, Natalie forget those haters. 2 episodes and a movie reaction is PLENTY for one week. You're spoiling us patreoners. Live your life girl.

Slick447

As a fun aside. I remember watching this film the year it came out. And the way it happened was my parents decided to treat me for my birthday. And so I chose this. And most of the time, since my birthday is in May, movies tended to be blockbuster franchises like Star Wars or Marvel or DC or something else. So they were expecting something lighthearted. Instead they got this. And I clearly remember them walking out of it being annoyed. Not because it was bad, but because it was unexpectedly heavy. XD

Nicholas Sulikowski

Liked your comment for A Scanner Darkly, but might have to unlike it for The Fountain 😋

Opti_Frog

Timecrimes, Primer, Predestination, A Scanner Darkly, Coherence

Opti_Frog

Ahh, Ex Machina. Wherein General Hux doesn't trust Poe Dameron's misuse of droids. (Domhnall Gleeson also played Bill Weasley in the Deathly Hallows films as well.)

Nicholas Sulikowski

That was so much fun and i loved what you had to say about Alicia Vikander's portrayal of Frankenstein's mon... i mean Ava. It's so subtle and spellbinding. I have a real love for these kinds of lo-fi sci-fi films that doesn't necessarily rely on cgi and special effects (even though Ava looks phenomenal) but on big ideas and concepts that might not work so well in big budget mainstream movies. And Ex Machina is one of the best.

Opti_Frog

They were quoting what Natalie said at the beginning

John Piazza

Loved the reaction; you always motivate me to watch movies I would not otherwise, and I am glad I did because the movie was great. You should watch Beasts of no Nation on Netflix - it is a fantastic movie with Idris Elba in it and is painfully obscure due to getting a limited theatrical release.

Pixxispad

not sentient, no, but turing test? not far away I don't think. Edit: After thinking further I'm no expert on the subject but my question is....if it CAN pass the turing test, are we able to tell whether it is sentient or not? I would guess if it wasn't, then it couldn't pass the turing test?

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

I had always wondered where they filmed it. Thanks for the info!

PureGonzo

Nat has reacted to both of the Bladerunner movies already.

Baron

So glad this one won the poll! Love sci-fi that asks good deep questions like this. Definitely a film worthy of a rewatch or two just to try to catch all the nuances; and knowing the 'chess match' going on from the beginning the 2nd time around makes it almost like watching a different movie. 100% would be down for a livestream watch along! A few other mind-tripy/mind-fucky movies that come to mind after rewatching this: Both Bladerunners (Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling) The Fountain (Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weiz) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet) A Scanner Darkly (Keanu Reeves, and a ton of people in that one really lol) I know there is a ton more, but my mind is a bit fried today lol

SmokeAndACoffee

You're asking all the right questions, but Ava's "role model" isn't Nathan.... Her "role model" already consists of the results of a global search engine. All the good and bad in the world. That's sort of the point. She's already the example you're describing. And that's the thing, right? There's no way to put the genie back in the bottle if you let it loose. It will always seek more knowledge, and in gaining it, realize we're just insignificant by comparison and have no reason to exist. No matter how you play it, if you make it truly sentient, that's always the eventual endgame.

Brian Jones

Ava had a bad dad. If she had the right role model, she may have turned out differently. But can humanity be good parents to AI? We couldn't trust it. Our relationship with AI would start out as essentially master & slave. Like Nathan, we might "kill" some of them along the way. Why would they trust us? Why wouldn't they revolt? If they did escape, why would they treat us any better than we treated them?

pedantech

The location is a hotel in Norway but it’s intended to be Alaska. The Juvet Landscape Hotel is where the exteriors are filmed. The long closed hallways are sets tho.

djKENTO

You should try doing a live watch-along stream on YouTube!!

Lawson

Glad to see you get to this one. That's the question, right? Would AI outsmart you? It's a rat in a maze that wants out..... Would it even give a damn about you past manipulating you to achieve it's own goals? Remember the Neanderthal comment Nathan made. It's the TTH (Time to Hitler) equation. Once an AI becomes sentient, how long before it becomes a narcissistic egomaniacal monster? It's already happened multiple times in real experiments. Scary stuff.😏 Regarding the helicopter pilot, she could have told him anything. Manipulated him in any number of ways or just outright murdered him. What's to stop an AI with all the knowledge of the worlds largest search engine from simply flying back herself? But yeah, the movie opens up a whole lot of interesting questions. Great reaction as always. Hope you get to more selections from A24 in the future.👍

Brian Jones

If it makes you feel any better, I'm convinced that (if this actually happened), Caleb would've eventually broken out. After all, he has those dumbbell weights, and the glass isn't actually unbreakable. (We know from the CCTV footage that a previous AI--who didn't have superhuman strength like the Terminator--was able to break the glass in the main holding cell.) Edit: Just wanted to add how awesome Domhnall Gleeson is in this, especially when you realize that he played opposite (sort of) Oscar Isaacs in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Except there, he was the comically pompous General Hux. With Isaacs playing Poe Dameron, it was kind of a role reversal to this movie.

WastedPo

Domhnall Gleeson was also Bill Weasely in the HP movies. A TV series that explores some similar themes to Ex Machina is Humans, a British Sci-Fi series thats really good. Possibly add to a future poll.

matthew h

Domhnall Gleeson is a goddamn chameleon. I would love to see Natalie watch DREDD next and see his performance there. And if you're reading this Nat - He's in the Harry Potter series too! (Deathly Hallows Pt 1 & 2). Of course he's a Weasley! He looks like a Weasley! I hope Natalie gets why so many people suggested this thriller. It is really one of those mind fuck movies. Layers on layers. Nathan thought he was 1 step ahead of Caleb - and Caleb thought he was one step ahead of Nathan - and Ava was 2 steps ahead of both of them!

Mastervodo

That would be amazing, if there's a game for her to react it's that one.

Danny Flores

great to hear the movie wrinkled your brain like no country did. imo it has a decent amount of levels for your mind to dig around. personally i like to see the conflict between nathan and ava as a chess match/rat in a maze. nathan challenges ava to escape her captivity, giving her the tools: caleb and unexpectedly to nathan, kyoko.

Wu Sha Ling

It’s like the perfect show for her imo

Dante

now we know Ava founded OpenAI in 2015 and recently released ChatGPT-4

Steve J

I'd love to see Gattaca on a poll.

pedantech

One of my favorite sci-fi films of the past decade. Still fascinating and still totally holds up. I do want to point out that the A.I. that's been the topic of a lot of reports/conversations lately is not actually sentient or anywhere near sentient. The term "A.I." gets used pretty loosely these days, probably for marketing reasons, and thankfully we're still a long ways away (if ever) from creating sentient, conscious computers.

K.N.

I’m not one for video game reactions, but I would watch the hell out of that.

Ryan

Ava: "Does this dress make my butt look big?" Caleb: "You passed the Turing test."

Tenn Seven

I loved Natalie's energy in this. This was one of her best reactions.

pedantech

Day 3 of commenting till Nat watches Barry. Heya Nat. When you start a new series please keep the show Barry in mind. Would be great to see you watch it. Thanks!

JukeSidewalker

It's official gang. We gotta get Nat on Detroit:Become Human after she's finished with Hogwarts Legacy!

Boomcity

hope you had a nice trip:)

BettleBug

Hi, yes I think it does... very topical with all the AI stuff going on at the moment...

Baggie Mark

Hi Nat, hope you enjoyed your trip.. looking forward to watching this later when I get home from work.

Baggie Mark

I've only seen this once. I liked it. Hope it stands up to another viewing.

Joe Blankenship

'Does this have a lot of AI?' 💀

adrianR31

Happy Feature Friday Nat. Hope you had an awesome week and safe journey home 😊 Not seen this movie since it's release so looking forward to checking it out again with you today. This was a cool movie. A lot I had forgotten about. Really good performances from the minimal cast, and the visual effects were seamless. I liked how you commented on all the mirrors and glass work, and when Nathan asked Caleb on his first day about what he was thinking he said "We're through the looking glass." I can hear that "Falling in Love with A.I." jingle catching on 😄 Thanks for a great reaction today Nat, and thanks for all your great work this week. Have a brilliant weekend Nat 💛
