2023-06-18 13:02:02 +0000 UTCFinally got to watch this one with you now that it's out on Disney+. Loved your reaction Nat!

2023-06-10 11:20:45 +0000 UTCHey, I'm a little late, "had" to wait for WoW to hit Disney+ in Germany. But I waited for that AND this full reaction, I did not spoil myself for either with the youtube video. Uh, sorry for the -1 view, but I hope Patreons are allowed lmao Really, Nat? No tissues? Come on. You need tissues watching comedies! That will never not be funny to me. Anyway, great movie. I was always so-so on the first one, but this one was so much better. Practically the same plot, but they use it to tell like 7 meaningful stories. My biggest complaint is probably that Kiri's deal is left for the sequel(s), but I guess I'm on board now. See ya in the next one. What's it called, the Element of Earth? Avatars in the Air? Fuck Fire?? Goddamn the humans are SO despicable in this. I want Avatar 5 to be the Na'vi coming to Earth and putting a STOP to our fuckery. Permanently. Screw this place, Pandora can have it all.
Shen V
2023-06-08 00:28:29 +0000 UTCThe colonel will definitely come around to the Na'vi way of life. Him and Jake are going to team up in the future to fight a bigger a threat.
@adrian_r31
2023-04-20 00:51:05 +0000 UTCI strongly suspect that kiri's 'father' is actually Eywa.

2023-04-09 22:17:41 +0000 UTCIts not based on any books but its based on James Cameron’s vision that he had for decades. He was waiting for the technology to catch up. That is why it took 13 years for the sequel, they’ve been planning (and even filming) movies 2, 3 and 4 together for a very long time. Im sure they have this all thought through.
Eduard Zavadskij
2023-04-09 09:57:45 +0000 UTCBefore filming this one they wrote all the scripts for the five movies so its all been planned out for the saga. I would definitely recommend watching the behind the scenes to see the new technology they made for these movies and all the underwater stunts they did.

2023-04-09 09:49:49 +0000 UTCi definitely enjoyed this one more but i also love the first, so, the recombinate (revived avatars) thing was in the comics between the movies, but i definitely understand its a little out of the blue for movie only viewers this has been a Passion Project for Camron, which im excited to see where things go, when the first movie came out he said he had a whole series of movies in mind because this was a story he has been working on for a long time and its starting to show in this one, im excited to see where we go from here, also apparently they were filming 3 at the same time as 2 (to make sure the kids dont age up to much apparently) so we are definitely getting a 3. he definitely gets way ahead of himself, but honestly im excited. honestly a Mochumentory on Pandora would be enough to get me excited, i love the world building in these movies and i LOVE Pandora

2023-04-09 09:10:16 +0000 UTCI meant the companies, like Warner Brothers. And I'm pretty sure it's been said that they were making Matrix 4 whether Lana Wachowski signed on or not.
Slick447
2023-04-09 03:01:09 +0000 UTCI'm right there with you Jamie. The only character growth in this movie came from Lo'ak. The rest was setup for sequels and rehashing plot points from the first film. I completely get why people like this movie, but I need more than beautiful visuals to make a film entertaining to me.

2023-04-09 02:55:53 +0000 UTCIf the wachowskis were milking the franchise we'd have a lot more than 4 films.

2023-04-08 20:16:42 +0000 UTCNah, it literally ended the exact same way as the first one, leaving jake in the exact same mindset and situation as the first one. As well, why didnt jake have his whole tribe attack when his kids were taken at the beginning? Then him deserting the tribe just so the movie can explore the water is poor writing. But having a whole movie to get the characters to the spot they were at the end of the first one is weak storytelling. I enjoyed the movie fine but its not better than the first.

2023-04-08 17:46:57 +0000 UTCMost people agree that this one is waaay better than the first one

2023-04-08 08:31:28 +0000 UTCGiant creatures that slow "Stops" aging on a foreign planet. Did James Cameron switch Sandworm for Wales and no-one notice.
Daniel Vezina
2023-04-08 06:50:26 +0000 UTCIMO this franchise has just become mainstream to hate on. This movie did everything I needed it to. I came for insane visuals, big world-building, and cool alien shit and we got all of that. I have never understood the criticisms of the story. Yes, it's generic but that's all it needs to be. I really haven't had a theatre experience as breathtaking as this one was.
Dante
2023-04-08 04:08:57 +0000 UTCI wish Quaritch, would have offered Spyder a transfer to an Avatar body. Would he betray the spirit of Na'vi, or would he give up the core of the Na'vi to become more physically more Na'vi.

2023-04-08 03:39:03 +0000 UTCPayakan, always reminded me of 52 the loneliest whale, which makes the story even sadder for me.

2023-04-08 02:21:02 +0000 UTCEveryone is entitled to their opinion. You think it's a masterpiece and I think it's a symbol of everything wrong with Hollywood's incessant need to keep milking properties for every dime they can get out of them. The beauty of opinions is we can both be right :)
Slick447
2023-04-08 02:06:44 +0000 UTCi agree with liking this movie more than the first, the underwater visuals were so insane!! the cast was great too, kate winslet broke tom cruise's record of holding her breath underwater for 7 minutes and 15 seconds! also zoe saldaña really outdid herself as neytiri in this one, especially in neteyam's death scene. i could feel her screams so deeply lol i love her so much

2023-04-08 02:02:50 +0000 UTCI don’t know how to appropriately describe it, but this movie felt more like a story than a movie. When I was watching it, I was waiting for the movie to start, but when I finished it, I just wanted to be back in that world watching more moments. I think the first one is a better movie for characters and story, but the second movie is better with personality and pacing. I think the beginning of this movie is weird and I don’t like the return of that character as an avatar, but I’m now interested what kind of drama they will force in later movies.

2023-04-08 00:29:35 +0000 UTCFirst of all, I wanted to mention that a movie I recommended in the last movie reaction comments section was voted #2 best movie of the 21st century in The Hollywood Reporter’s (admittedly controversial) critics poll (available here: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/best-movies-21st-century/), that movie being Inside Llewyn Davis, written and directed by the Coen brothers, and one of my favourite films of all time. But regarding Avatar, it’s definitely not a hot take to say this is better than the first film. As someone who has always been a firm defender of the original Avatar, The Way of Water is a superior film in every regard. I think much of the credit should go to co-writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, best known as the writers of the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, some of my favourite blockbusters in recent memory. But that’s not to downplay the work of co-writer and director James Cameron, who has consistently delivered some of the most crowdpleasing blockbuster films from the past 3 decades. Part of the reason it took 13 years to make this film is because James Cameron was adamant that the entire series be written in advance. Cameron and his team of writers spent 4 years writing Avatars 2 through 5 before Avatar: The Way of Water went into production. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy was apparently a major inspiration for Cameron, and the reason he made the decision to write the screenplays for all 4 films in advance of production. Fun fact: when Cameron and his team were originally breaking the story for the sequels, the original intended storyline for Avatar 2 was so large in scope that they had to split it into 2 films, expanding the first half of that story into what became The Way of Water. I was surprised to learn this after seeing the film because it works so well as a singular cinematic experience. Despite teasing a number of plot elements for future films, even the storylines that aren’t given complete resolutions are still given climactic developments, such as Kiri’s unique connection with Eywa saving her parents from drowning, or Spider saving the alien clone of his father from drowning (a lot of people being saved from drowning, I guess this is The Way of Water after all). Some people have criticised the plot of this film for being unoriginal or simple, but while I can understand why someone might feel that way about the first film, I don’t think it applies to the sequel at all. Between the alien clone of the villain, father of the adoptive son of the protagonist, and the boy and his alien space whale story between Lo’ak and Payakan (my favourite character in the film), this film is mashing together tried-and-true storytelling tropes in new and fun ways. And all of that is without even getting into the incredible new visual effects innovations pioneered by this film. The one thing I’d like to call attention to is the skimwings, those flying crocodiles that can traverse both ocean and sky. The performance capture for scenes featuring those creatures was achieved with the help of water-jet-propelled vehicles designed for the film. It doesn’t seem like it, but there is a significant amount of practical effects involved in these Avatar films, despite them being mostly CGI in the final cut. Apologies for the long comment, I might have been able to trim it down more if I wasn’t absolutely crossfaded right now. I enjoyed getting fucked up and watching this film for the fifth time with you Natalie. Take care, I look forward to your John Wick 3 reaction.

2023-04-08 00:25:55 +0000 UTCBut also retread a LOT of water (no pun intended) from the first movie, down to the ~legendary beast that no one can tame~

2023-04-07 23:54:35 +0000 UTCOkay the trailers really didn’t give ANYTHING away in this 😂 and the opening 5 minutes are kinda brutal like “this happened and we have this technology, get onboard” and you’re like okay!!!!! 😮💨😅 I was always intimidated by this movies runtime but it actually felt like a breeze at times, I literally commented on how there were so many moving parts in this at basically the same time you did😂 at some points it almost felt like 2 movies worth, but it’s impressive how all the parts came together at the end James Cameron seems kinda weird at times but hats off to him for this movie 🫡

2023-04-07 23:29:38 +0000 UTCI rolled my eyes so hard when it ended in the exact same way. If the 3rd movie has his family leaving the ocean people and joining another clan only to it end with a shot of his eyes opening again, that would be really fucking funny.

2023-04-07 20:26:19 +0000 UTCvisually stunning but I was really bored cause it also feels like 3 hours and it's really predictable, the story is so generic, they havn't learned from the first movie :/

2023-04-07 19:46:05 +0000 UTCThe really impressive part of this movie is the way its made and it still blows my mind. If you havent seen the bts footage or them going through how its made, i highly suggest looking that up on youtube. James Cameron really is a legend.

2023-04-07 18:31:53 +0000 UTCYou know at first I was a little disappointed Natalie doesn't criticize films too harshly (like I do), but honestly, I think that bit of positivity does me some good. I'm just one more Matrix 4 away from becoming a crotchety old cynic. I doubt I'll come away loving this movie, but I'm here for the ride!

2023-04-07 16:07:04 +0000 UTCI honestly left halfway through. It was just so lackluster to me and just about the CGI. I felt nothing from the characterizations; I felt nothing from the story. It was all just so bland to me.

2023-04-07 16:03:01 +0000 UTCHappy Feature Friday Nat. Been looking forward to this all day and can't wait to watch along with you. It's such a cool movie 😊 I really loved your reaction Nat. I just knew that you would love this movie. I enjoyed it just as much as the first. The 3D visuals in the cinema were spectacular, but I also enjoyed all the new characters and learning all their new tribal rituals and the new creatures. Sigourney Weaver did indeed voice Kiri. James Horner did the original Avatar score, and also Cameron's Aliens and Titanic, but sadly he died in 2015, so his composer friend Simon Franglen used Horner's themes and created the score for this movie, and he will be doing the remaining 3 movies. Definitely needed this reaction tonight Nat. Thank you and thanks for all your awesome work this week. Have a brilliant weekend 💛
