Also, johnny deep got his fame from the show 21 jumpstreet and hated being pigeon holed as rhe pretty boy (why he did a lot of weird roles early on.) When they went to do this movie, a satire of scraping old 70 and 80s tv shows for movies, they got the two original leads on board by promising to kill there original characters off

Fun Fact: Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise, who played the two DEA agents, were in the 80s tv show of the same name. And I think that they played their same characters in this movie. Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Dave Franco, and Rob Riggle are all fantastic in this movie. And I very highly recommend the sequel "22 Jump Street", it's just as if not more hilarious! This movie is just a silly fun popcorn movie, if you did enjoy this the second one is pretty much just as ridiculous and fun.

You don’t really miss much other than maybe a little more attachment to the characters but personally I think that mainly applies to people who watched the original multiple times over the years. I know multiple people who watched the original for the first time just a few days before watching Maverick and afterwards felt like it wasn’t really necessary.

You won't miss anything from the first movie because most of the non-action dialog is the characters talking about what happened in the first movie (I'm pretty sure they just assumed that 80% of the audience hadn't watched the first one other than internet memes)
