ooh, nice thread. I think Anderton said... "yes you are right, I will be killing this man on the dot..." which makes it premeditated. The killing with scissors may be an impulse right on the spot - he just happened to be holding scissors. Anderton... well he may be doing an execution in his thinking and willing to accept the consequences... if this logic works. In terms of the writing, the murder is happening in the minds of the precogs and the system categorizes it via pattern recognition. I think the writing is good, if it doesn't make sense it could be the film makers' execution.

2023-06-13 05:02:27 +0000 UTCAh... I noticed the helmet may be more for crashing through windows... which the team does later in the scene... except Anderton who came up the stairs.

2023-06-13 04:42:07 +0000 UTCnice... I finally got to see this reaction. Okay now in defense of Philip K Dick... he wrote this book The Minority Report in 1956. I will describe this as "real" science fiction. Of course today 67 years later you might have seen other works that were inspired by the stories that he wrote and even the style of his writing or storytelling such that the original may not seem so original anymore. Your criticism of Spielberg may be spot on... although I never noticed those lighting "tactics" (artifacts) that he does frequently until someone points them out - I just look around whatever lighting or lens flares he puts in the way. I think this is Spielberg's way of doing art - he doesn't start off with this kind of lighting yes? He sneaks up to it for later in the movie. I hear your criticism and I marvel at it. (Maybe I'm conflating Spielberg and another director's lens flares... lol... that I don't notice until someone points them out). Back to Philip K Dick... do you know that Blade Runner is a bad adaptation of one of his books?, there's no getting around that. He wrote "real" science fiction it seems so influential that many of his books have been adapted into movies. If anything he has inspired many film makers, he's like a wellspring, a fountain of inspiration... regardless of how well or not well the adaptation is or how questionable some choices were... the films may not stand the test of time for some but the original science fiction writings are still there to inspire the next generation of film makers to try again. I like science fiction and this one's pretty good. I am reminded of a pretty good animated short series called Psycho Pass which is very much Philip K Dick inspired... perhaps you are noticing the Philip K Dick inspiration in Stranger Things... I don't know...

2023-06-08 12:58:31 +0000 UTCI love this film! I think the harsh lighting and style was Spielberg taking a crack at making a futuristic film noir.

2023-05-22 00:36:48 +0000 UTCThe movie's based off a Phillip K. Dick novel, that's where the inspiration came from. They said that at the end of the film. I've watched this before and enjoyed the rewatch. I've seen this a number of times already - last time was prolly a year or two ago. So this is one that needs a fair amount of time apart from viewings to really enjoy. xD Way to go at making me feel old! I was born in 88, and am turning 35 here in 13 days. hahahaha, gosh! :P
Logan Kerlee
2023-05-22 00:35:16 +0000 UTCThe film visual style is the result of Bleach-Bypassing during the editing process. The reason for this is to give the film an almost dreamy look. The idea being that we, the audience, are seeing a dark vision of the future similar to the precogs seeing future murders. It's a nice idea that fits the commentary and themes of the movie though it does get a bit overbearing at times.

2023-05-21 20:53:30 +0000 UTCYeah it's an ok movie. I think it had a lot more impact when it was released cos that kinda thing was not very common at all. Since then there has been every kind of scy fi you can think of. Not one I voted for but it's ok.

2023-05-21 05:58:00 +0000 UTCYeah I really don’t understand why the demand is so high for a lot of creators to watch this. Like you said it’s not awful but it’s not great. It’s just eh. Must be a nostalgic thing.

2023-05-21 03:15:22 +0000 UTCBut then wouldn’t the Crow murder have a minority report in that case? Which Agatha confirms there isn’t. And the almost murder was John’s idea but Lamar was the one who decided to kill him, which is why it was a red ball with his name. I don’t think what you’re saying tracks. There’s nothing that makes it seem like the person who thinks or hires someone is the person who shows up as the murdered, though legally they would also be responsible. Lamar hired a guy and that guy showed up on a ball, and then Lamar re-enacted it to get away with it to make it like an echo, but even then there should have been a separate red ball or even normal ball since Lamar planned it, for the fake echo murder of Anne Lively. So that’s another hole. Unless it was early enough before the ball system? But that’s a big leap.
Tay Schumaker
2023-05-21 02:31:36 +0000 UTCIt was premeditated - by Lamar. Precrime's lack of distinction between murderer and the person willing to make it happen is just another flaw in the system. Similarly to how Lamar hiring some guy doesn't make it onto a ball. The almost-murder at the end is also John's idea at first, but Lamar would have been the killer. Everything we could come up with why it shouldn't work is part of the point. It can't, or if it can, it shouldn't.

2023-05-21 01:23:01 +0000 UTCI have not seen this since it came out. I did not like it nearly as much as my memory of it. It was a neat story but the production of it feels very dated. It all feels way overly dramatized. The script, the performances, the lighting, the shaky cam ... it was all dialled to an eleven and not in a particularly good way unfortunately. Not terrible but also far from great.

2023-05-20 15:06:30 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed this reaction and I don’t think I’ve thought about this movie in twenty years. Steven Spielberg and Scott Frank could have made a straightforward version of this movie that was perfectly competent, a box office success and well reviewed, in their sleep. Thankfully, they decided to that while also getting as weird as possible within every scene. As a whole it doesn’t get close to 12 Monkeys or The Matrix or AI but looked at scene by scene there is so much chaotic strangeness. I especially love the Charlie Chaplin homage in the car factory.
Jacob King
2023-05-20 13:52:49 +0000 UTCDoes it? Like I said I’m sure that’s the logic the movie would use, but he still doesn’t decide to kill that specific person until right before. He states over and over that he doesn’t even know who Crow is. You can explain it how you did, but it’s thin. To me premeditation requires more specifics then “I’ll kill that guy if I ever find him.”
Tay Schumaker
2023-05-20 12:43:15 +0000 UTCHe said he had been thinking about killing his son's murderer everyday for years. That counts as premeditation.

2023-05-20 08:50:02 +0000 UTCFun fact about when your fingers and toes prune after being in the water: apparently it's something your brain tells your fingers and toes to do on purpose! It's so that your finger tips will have more surface area and be able to grip things easier in wet conditions, and, if I remember correctly, people who have nerve damage in their fingers don't end up with those fingers pruning. As a kid I had always thought it was just the skin absorbing too much water or kind of like how your skin gets stained when you get ink on them; just something that happens when you have too much of this or that. But when I found out it was something your body chooses to do on purpose my mind was blown.

2023-05-20 06:24:46 +0000 UTCThanks SO much for watching this — I had literally just rewatched this a couple of months ago, but was happy for the chance to watch it again with a newcomer. Disagree with you about the overall impact of the film (clearly), but your insights were *definitely* appreciated (and more than legitimate). Other commenters have talked about the source material, so I won't go into that here — but ultimately, it's all about the individual experience.

2023-05-20 03:14:10 +0000 UTCI think the artsiness is part of a wider attempt to hammer home the 'Precrime as religion' metaphor. It worked for me back in 2002 (though I was 14 and hadn't seen a huge number of movies back then). Maybe in the 21 years since artsiness like that has become a lot more common so it's not as positively striking any more. I think that's the 'Seinfeld is Unfunny' trope.

2023-05-20 01:36:02 +0000 UTCI've always enjoyed this movie, despite its flaws; but I don't know that I love it. The dramatic scene blocking and the over-exposed light is--I think--Spielberg's attempt at a kind of cyberpunk neo-noir look. The thing is, I don't know that it works either with, or because of, Spielberg's often over-sentimental tone. I'm not knocking Spielberg--I love Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, and many more. But the source material, of the same name, by Philip K. Dick, who also wrote the original story for Blade Runner ('Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'), is much darker, and more ambiguous than Spielberg tends to tread. What could have been a haunting cyberpunk crime noir about fate vs. choice, is instead an action-adventure movie with an upbeat John Williams score (whom I also love) with a happy-ending that feels not only contrived but tacked on. For me, the best part of the movie is Samantha Morton's performance as Agatha: she goes full balls-to-the-wall on this one.

2023-05-19 23:15:32 +0000 UTCThis is my favorite Tom Cruise movie. I love the original concept and although I agree with your take on some of their lighting choices throughout, I can look past that. So glad you finally watched it!

2023-05-19 23:07:56 +0000 UTCA couple of things worth mentioning. Back in the day in '02 it was a very impressive looking movie. It still looks good, but nowadays there's a lot of stuff out there which looks similar or better. The plot is quite dense and definitely has a lot of bait-and-switch moments. I think it's mostly fine, but because of this it's not nearly as tight as say Jurassic Park or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Spielberg also went overboard with the schmaltz, which can really take you out of the experience. Overall, a good but not great movie.

2023-05-19 22:53:16 +0000 UTCWhen you said “Precrime? Are we seeing crime before it happens?” I was like oh you’re going in BLIND blind 😂 was super fun rewatching this one with your commentary Idk why but I feel like the third act tends to drag and lose me a little in a lot of those early two thousands action/Sci flicks. But the eye transplant/bathtub scene always stuck with me 👀

2023-05-19 21:55:35 +0000 UTCIts been a while since I last watched this film, what I did notice this time round was that I think it was trying too hard to be artistic with every shot, hence the over exposed scenes.. For its day it was a good movie but I don't think it has aged that well.
Baggie Mark
2023-05-19 20:39:03 +0000 UTCI feel like the lighting issue has something to do with poor upscaling or HDR or LED screens or something. I saw it back in the day in theaters and on DVD and while I remember it being a bit unique, I don't remember it looking so over-exposed as you put it. But it definitely did this time on Amazon.

2023-05-19 20:23:30 +0000 UTCIt was a pilot program in the DC area, it was authorized. They were voting to make it nationwide, hence the broader and more detailed investigation. There are some flaws, but I really love this movie. The one hole I never got around is why Anderton’s murder wasn’t a red ball. It wasn’t pre-meditated, it was a crime of passion. You could argue that he would always kill the guy who kidnapped his son, but it’s not like he knew who he was or where he was, so it doesn’t quite make sense.

2023-05-19 18:37:16 +0000 UTCWow, I just read that the stories are much older than I thought. The novella The Minority Report was in 1956; We Can Remember It for You Wholesale (turned into Total Recall) was 1966 short story; and finally the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (turned into Blade Runner) was in 1968.

2023-05-19 17:38:45 +0000 UTCHappy Friday Feature Nat. Not seen this movie since it's release but I did remember a lot of the plot points. I think it's one of these movies that once you know the plot surprises, it loses a lot of the impact watching a second time. You asking the most important questions like why don't the pre-cogs get pruny 😂 and loved you practicing your winner's speech. One day Nat 🤞😊 Stranger Things definitely takes inspiration from a lot of 80's Spielberg movies, especially E.T. which I would love to see your reaction to on your channel. Thanks for a fun reaction today Nat, and thanks for all your great work this week. Have a brilliant weekend 💛

2023-05-19 17:33:36 +0000 UTCI do love this film, despite its flaws, many of which you covered. I also like some of the fan theories around the ending - specifically, that everything after Anderton is haloed is happening in his head, and he's living out his fantasies like Gideon says as he's being put into containment...
