Please do Detective Pikachu. It's a good movie if you don't know Pokemon and a great one if you do!

Nikolai Brubach

I freaking love this movie. This was what I wanted the first D&D movie to be. One of the greatest things of this movie is you don't have to be a D&D player to enjoy it. I will say being a player there is a lot of fan service in this film with the spells and lore and things. But the plot is great, the special effects are captivating, and the characters and dialog is wonderful and witty, even without that knowledge and experience. I will say that one thing you may have missed is a mid-credit scene, it's just a tiny one but I highly recommend going back through for the mid-credit scene. Glad you enjoyed this and I hope it fueled that desire to play some D&D, or any table top role playing game, cause they are truely fun times!

DM DC

This movie was super fun, glad you liked it!

Riolkin

I was never into Pokémon, but I really enjoyed Detective Pikachu.

RavenHairedSongbird

This was fun! Also I’d enjoy it if you watch both the Mario bros movie and detective pikachu so my vote is yes 👍🏼

Luis R.

Oh nice

Rey

i would absolutely love to see you react to Detective Pikachu, its a great movie! Im glad you enjoyed this movie, as an avid dnd player this was amazing, so many references and spells from the game in there, even the other parties in the arena were all references haha i also LOOOVE how much practical effects are in this movie, the Dragonborn especially looked fantastic!

Tesh

I really enjoyed watching this movie in theatres and really loved watching it again here. I feel the fantasy genre in general has gotten caught up in being overly grand or serious, maybe to follow after things like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, and with pages of lore that you MUST know understand why Kingdom A is at war with Kingdom B and War X has been going on for Y generations and so on. What I liked most about this movie was that it, instead, was fun. Plus it was accessible; almost every name they mention is one that exists in the main D&D setting (the locations, the big dragon, Simon's ancestor, etc), but the story doesn't really rely on people already knowing that. It's just a fun bonus namedrop Easter egg that tells the people who do recognize them that the people who made the movie did their homework. Fun Fact: the icy prison at the start of the movie is named Revel's End and exists in the D&D game books because of the movie. However, due to the long production time of the movie (and covid delays) the film came out three years after the release of the game book where the prison is described. For future films, I enjoyed both Detective Pikachu and the new Mario movie, though I did enjoy Detective Pikachu quite a bit more. Although on the other hand, I have a friend who hates Illumination movies and so expected to hate the Mario movie, but he really enjoyed it, so who knows.

CheeseRepair

The Hither-Thither staff *is* too convenient, but it helps to think of it like an actual D&D game (which I know you haven't played, Nat). I like to think that in the game, the players screwed up and destroyed the bridge so the dungeon master decided that walking stick Holga had been carrying around was actually a magic item that would get them across the chasm. Then the players started using it for everything.

Kevin Mowery

Nat, I think it could be fun to watch the Mario movie if only for Jack Black as Bowser. Also, it could be fun much like this movie. I honestly think the new Mario movie is to Mario what Honor Among Thieves is to D&D. They're both simple yet fun movies that are both chock full of easter eggs for the fans. But newcomers don't need to know everything in order to enjoy the movie(s).

Trevor S Bright

Big thumbs up for Detective Pikachu though!

Slick447

Thanks, Nat. This reaction was a lot of fun. As a long time D& D player (I started playing in 1977), I can say this movie is a (mostly) accurate portrayal of a typical D & D campaign. They took a few liberties with the rules (especially with Doric's Wild Shape ability), but by and large they did a fairly good job. There were a few Easter eggs that you had to be fairly familiar with the rules to spot (for example, Simon had a Bag of Holding (a satchel much bigger on the inside) on his belt, which was why Edgin kept giving him things to hold...).

Chris Gronau

Yes please watch both The Mario Movie and Detective Pikachu

Colter

I would LOVE to see your reaction to Detective Pikachu

XadeChronos

In answer to your Mario question, I probably wouldn't recommend it if you didn't grow up playing Mario. It's a lot of references and in-jokes, and if you take those away, it's just an average kid's movie.

Slick447

Nat, didn’t you subscribe to Paramount+ to watch RRR, and maybe that’s why Minority Report was free?

Wex

huge agree

alejandro

Just got finished watching and wow! I've already watched this a good number of times - but I'm very happy that you enjoyed this one so much Natalie. This was a very happy surprise! One that I super enjoyed, it made feel very happy watching this reaction! As I said up there, this wasn't made by or with any of the Critical Roll folks. I super dig on Critical Roll and I would've been stoked to have seen any of them take part in this - but they're all amazing voice actors not so experienced much on the live action side. If you ever do decide to jump into Critical Roll and would like to post reactions to previous episodes/campaigns (they're all posted on YouTube), know that you've got someone that'd be down to watch! :)

Logan Kerlee

It's very accessible for people who haven't played, don't worry.

Patrick Egan

Honestly I love Michelle Rodriguez in everything she’s in, you could argue she’s playing the same badass fighter side character in every movie, but goddamn does she slay the role every time 🫡

Daniel McGuinness

This movie wasn't made by Critical Roll. It'd of been rad if that was the case but nopers on that. :)

Logan Kerlee

To be fair, all items in D&D are made up. ;) That staff being a item casting a clearly above 9th level Gate spell that works on the same plane, can allow travel both ways, and doesn't require concentration is so powerful! Ha!

Kiera

As for the Mario Bros. movie, it's cute I guess, and better than the 90's one, but also 90% references, some of which I didn't get despite growing up familiar with numerous Mario games (though I haven't played any since the Wii era.) I haven't seen Detective Pikachu, but am always up for more Ryan Reynolds content.

Troy B.

For those interested and in the U.S. and who have an Amazon Prime account, you can watch it for "free" via a 7-day trial to MGM+, just cancel before your trial ends or you're charged $5.99 (which to be honest is the same cost as renting the movie on Amazon, so it works out either way.)

Troy B.

They had promoted their new season of the cartoon Vox Machina a while back, maybe that was it?

Troy B.

Slo, D and D is a video game there is even one called Neverwinter nights you can play they are about to release Baulder's gate 3 I think, and its an online role playing game as well.

Jayson Phillips

Started playing when i was 10 in the 80's and been hooked ever since, for theatre geeks it was a new way to use their talents by role playing their character, most of the rare items in the movie were made up like the staff and the helm but Wizards of the coast are making them game items now so that's cool. Paladins are meant to be like that holier than tho attitude and incorruptible. My 2 fav characters to play in the game are Bard (Elven minstrel) and Wild mage lol. Glad you got to experience this movie =)

Jayson Phillips

This reaction was a happy surprise! I've played D&D for over 25 years and I think this movie captured the spirit of a D&D game pretty well. There's always tons of magic shenanigans going on, bickering party members and convoluted plans. In the movie there were lots of subtle references that anyone not familiar with the game would miss. Spells and magic abilities from the game were shown as they are supposed to work (mostly) and even the characters from the '80s cartoon showed up in the maze. But if you didn't know this it's absolutely fine and it doesn't detract from the experience. Very well made movie.

Berry

Was expecting Ant-Man Quantamania tbh

Nick James

For people watching for the first time, there is a small mid-credits scene (nothing major) not in the reaction, so pause the reaction, if you want to see it :)

Arronax06

your intro was fiiine!!!!

Jayson Phillips

YESSSSSSSSSS ty for this Nati!!!!!

Jayson Phillips

As someone who plays a wizard in Dungeons and Dragons in a campaign, I can confirm that nearly every spell used in this movie is a real spell that you can cast in game. I had a lot of fun watching this because I was able to spot all of them (resillient sphere, Maximilian's Earthen Grasp, Reverse Gravity, Time Stop, etc.). ALSO PLEASE WATCH DETECTIVE PIKACHU! That was such an underrated movie.

themightyabe

No way I literally just watched this like 2 days ago

nexus

As someone who has played D&D for nearly 40 years (in the 80s I was totally one of those kids from Stranger Things), I think this movie subtly incorporated the actual experience of playing D&D. The Speak With Dead scene is absolutely something that would happen in a real game, with the players trying to figure out what questions to ask while the dungeon master (playing the part of the corpses) hilariously tries to misinterpret everything as best they can. The Bridge Crossing scene was just like when a dungeon master provides an intricate puzzle, the players immediately screw it up because they weren’t really paying attention, and then they have to come up with an alternative solution (and Holga’s suggestion of tying a rope to her axe and throwing it across the chasm to embed itself in rock has got to be one of *the* most common unrealistic ideas that players come up with for crossing a chasm). The light humor throughout is very much like what you get when playing a game of D&D with a bunch of friends. And as my last example, Holga’s dialogue was perfect for the player that is roleplaying the inartful barbarian.

Wex

Yeah there’s no point watching the Mario movie at all unless you’re a huge Mario fan, and even then it’s probably not worth it. I tend to excuse a lot in movies clearly aimed at children but even with that in mind, the Mario movie is the worst kids movie I’ve seen in a long time. It’s just constant references with no substance behind them whatsoever.

Razor Bikini

You can absolutely watch Mario. It’s as much a Mario Kart movie as anything else.

djKENTO

Mario movie wasn't anything special. Visuals were great and some nostalgia but a lot of voices didn't work with the characters, including peach. Not much story there either so I would skip it for a reaction

Simon Bauer

This, so much this! It would be an amazing reaction :D

Danishprince

I'd love a Detective Pikachu reaction!

Jacob

It's fine Nat, I'll look forward to watching it later in the year..

Baggie Mark

It was released on 23 may and this is the best one from the franchise. You will love it

Amar Gajmer

Omg had no idea it released to streaming so quickly! Will have to check it out soon :)

Natalie Gold

I'm sorry :( I wish things would just release all over the world at the same time!

Natalie Gold

I have no idea what you just said, but you're welcome!

Natalie Gold

Huh...I wonder why I thought they had something to do with the making of it. I could've sworn I saw Critical Role on a billboard in LA for this movie, but I must've just been combining things in my head 😂

Natalie Gold

Omg please watch detective pikachu!! It is very good and funny

Explxsive

I think one of the things this movie did best was the balance of catering to people who have played the game and people who haven't. They made sure to explain enough that people who aren't familiar with the game or the lore won't have any trouble following along, while at the same time including enough things from the game to make players happy. The Red Wizards Of Thay have been part of the game for quite a while, and pretty much all of the places mentioned are from the game(specifically from the "Forgotten Realms" setting). The unique-looking monsters are from the game too, many of them since the very early days. The Intellect Devourers aren't too hard to kill in the game, but if they get a chance to attack they can be NASTY. The panther from the arena is a Displacer Beast, and is probably my favorite of all the classic D&D monsters. They're able to "displace" light so they appear several feet from where they actually are. How that translates into game mechanics changes with each revision of the rules, and I think they came up with a great way to represent it in a more visual medium like film. The dragon in the flashbacks was spitting acid. It was a black dragon, each color breathes something different(Red = fire, White = cold, Blue = lightning, Green = poison, Black = acid, there are also metallic good dragons, but you get the idea). As for the chonky red dragon in the Underdark, that's Themberchaud. He's been a part of D&D lore for quite some time, and yes he's that overweight in the lore too :) I hope you do get a chance to play D&D sometime, it can be a lot of fun if you find a good group. And no, this movie wasn't from the Critical Role team, but they did make the animated series The Legend Of Vox Machina which is on Amazon Prime and is based on their first campaign(with some changes to help smooth out the narrative flow). I HIGHLY recommend checking out that series at some point, it's really well done.

Patrick Egan

Can't wait for 22 Jump Street

Ian

Rocky Talkies!

Mastervodo

Hi Nat! Really glad you watched it! 😄  This movie is a real good hommage to D&D, as a player and GM I can confirm several situations and jokes reflects really well what could happen during a session of D&D (or any other tabletop RPG) hahaha, and maybe the 2 best point of the movie, is its accessibility to any audience, whether or not they're familiar with D&D or tabletop role-playing games in general and its entertainement for its simplicity but effectiveness 👌  I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Calo Grsf

Detective Pikachu is an awesome movie. Yes, please. And you missed a small post-credit scene.

Navjot Singh

There's also a small post credit scene as well Nat, nothing that important though

Tay Schumaker

Agree I don' think the character thing is an actual reference to Critical Role. The timing doesn't really match up, and he says it so many times it's more than just a wink. Still fun though

Tay Schumaker

Paramount+ in the U.S., I believe: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/dungeons-and-dragons-2023

Michael G. Munz

I've heard this is pretty good. Not a D&D player though.

Joe Blankenship

Is this streaming anywhere ? Dont got the 20 bucks for this rn

Rey

I'm glad you're watching this (and throwing curveballs at us, keeps us on our toes), cause even if you don't know anything about D&D, it's just a fun movie. I saw the 2000 D&D movie when it came out in theaters, and I've never been more glad to have gone seen the cheap, mid-afternoon show. It was so bad, I and the five other people in the theater entertained ourselves by giving it our own MST3K treatment to keep our sanity. So to say I was apprehensive about this movie is an understatement. So color me surprised when the studio went all out in marketing, early previews, and all the other things studios do when they're confident they have a good product. And I wasn't disappointed. My only gripe, really, is it gets a little long in the middle, but it doesn't kill any enjoyment from watching it. But overall the movie is better than it had any right to be. lol And as others have pointed out, Critical Role didn't have anything to do with this. There's apparently a shout-out to a character in the current campaign that's so thin I still don't think it's an actual shout-out (I don't care what Sam Riegel says), but for the most part they didn't have a hand in it. However, you should check out Legend of Vox Machina on Amazon Prime. It's an adaptation, by Critical Role, of their first campaign, and is still sitting at the top funded movie/television project on Kickstarter four years on at $11.3 million. Season 3 is in production, with maaaaaby a season 4? And their second campaign, the Mighty Nien, was recently greenlit, though with the writer's strike, I'm not sure when it's going to happen. But certainly something you should look into. The first 10 minutes of the first episode goes hard on letting you know it's not a kid's show, but once it finds its groove, it really takes off. Edit To Add: You should 100% watch the Super Mario movie. Fans of Mario will catch a lot of great shootouts, but even if you know nothing the movie is great and a lot of fun. You should also bug your friend to run a game of D&D for you when you get back to LA

Tony Sanson

Happy Friday nat been holding off watching this just incase you chose to watch Ch it so a smart move it appears 🥳 saving this til tomorrow though as little time on Fridays . Have a fantastic weekend nat and hope it's as sunny there as it is here

Ian

You definitely need to check out Legend of Vox Machina on Amazon Prime!!! It is based on a DnD campaign played by voice actors! I think you would enjoy it!!

Kristine Friling

easter egg: one of the teams in the maze sequence is modeled after the 80's dnd animated show

Wu Sha Ling

I was literally just thinking I should watch this movie!! Let’s goooo!! 😁

Daniel McGuinness

Just FYI Critical Role had nothing to do with this movie, other than a slight (maybe) easter egg referring to one of the characters from the third campaign

Tay Schumaker

You should watch John wick 4

Amar Gajmer

Oh my gosh, I just watched this! Excited to watch it with you again 😁

Yani Dodge

I love some D&D, and glad you picked this movie. I also love me some Critical Role, and while they didn't have much to do with this movie they do have an animated series you might like to check out if you enjoyed the movie.

Michael Burton

Hi Nat, it looks like we in the UK will have to wait a while before we can watch this film as it is not released in the UK yet, I did see on amazon it is released on 21st July.. :(

Baggie Mark

Natalie, you are a deva angel sent from the celestial realm of Ysgard by the Moonmaiden, Selune. Thank you for this.

Neo Geo

I've never played D&D but I love the concept and the people who love it make it their passion so I'm curious to see a movie take on what D&D is like!

LightsCameraJake

Well this is a happy surprise.

Brodie Bazo

This is perfect. I was going to watch this yesterday. So happy I waited.

Michael Butler

This movie is a goddamn treasure! 😍

Boomcity

Happy Feature Friday Surprise Nat. Excited to watch this movie with you but will have to catch this one at a later date as it's not yet hit streaming services here in the UK 😔 Look forward to watching your reaction then. Thanks for all your great work this week, and congrats on your 3-year YouTube reactionversary last week 🤗 Have an awesome weekend Nat 💛
