I got that.... (also old)

TexasNight

Fun fact, PG-13 wasn't a rating until the 80s, and it was because of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom that it became a thing. Also when this movie came out my dad was in the marines, and after he saw it they ended up doing an open water exercise, so he saw Jaws, then got thrown in the ocean!

Carter Nelson

Please, not another Scream reaction - probably the most overrated horror film ever - imo.

Richard Maurer

Nat you so need to watch Scream for natmares this year! You’re already semi-familiar with the “rules” of horror movies which is that movies vibe 😁 I’ll cast my vote for John Carpenters Halloween while I’m at it x

Daniel McGuinness

The more you know about sharks, the more ridiculous the shark in this movie becomes. Truth is great whites don't act like this at all. Great white attacks are mostly the result of mistaken identity - we tend to make ourselves look like seals when we're in the water. Peter Benchley, the author of Jaws, has disavowed both his book and movie for the damage they caused to sharks as after the movie catching and killing sharks became a big deal. In fact the only thing less accurate than Jaws is the modern version of Shark Week, which is all sensationalism. I really can't watch this movie anymore as the shark scenes alternate between annoying me and making me laugh.

Richard Maurer

Fun fact: PG13 wasn’t invented until the late 80s. This definitely feels like too much for PG lol

Chris Moon

Hi Nat, I finally got around to watching this with you good job making it through without too much screaming. I don't know if you watch Mythbusters but I remember liking their jaws special they did for shark week

Athenor

Robert Shaw is just simply an acting legend. Partly because of this role, but he was a very well-known and well-respected actor when this came out. I think it was kind of a surprise that Spielberg got him for this role. Great role and he played the hell out of it.

Jack Burton

PG-13 wasn't a thing yet, not until 1982-83-ish..........oops, one more thing. The watch Hooper has on is literally a dive watch, it's made for diving (pretty sure it's a Rolex Submariner)

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

If anyone has been waiting to watch, it just started streaming on Peacock.

The Middle-Aged Kid

Has anyone but me seen the Richard Jeni bit on Jaws 4? That is absolutely worth watching!

Mastervodo

The first bit with the girl being eaten alive is terrifying. Other than that, everything else is jump scares. But that 1st scene is ..... I don't know if there's a sufficient word for it.

Mastervodo

You should watch sharknado

1over137

I never understood why people thought this movie was terrifying lol the "scary" parts aren't even scary. I could understand if this movie gave you a fear of being out in the ocean but a lot of people got irrational fears from this movie lol like Nat thinking sharks could get on land or my aunt telling me that she used to be scared of going to the toilet because she thought the shark from Jaws would pop up and get her lolol I just don't get it

Jenny Tolls

*knock-knock-knock* Candygram. (Showing my age.)

Michael G. Munz

:) That's pretty cool! lol, only actor from my hometown that I know off the top of my head was Joe Pichler - kid actor who played in a number of small things. He went missing some years ago as a young adult. Sad story - but yeah, he was a cool dude, and my friend.

Logan Kerlee

That was the first time that I've ever watched this. My ex wife watched it when she was a youngster though and she told me that it was TERRIFYING! I can see why she was scared and I kinda feel bad for poking fun - but I watched other horror flicks like Friday the 13th and It as a kid. This was the scariest thing she experienced as a youngster. lol, it's been explained already - but this was before PG-13 was a thing, I'm pretty sure. With the amount of blood in this - I'd expect this movie to be rated R even today.

Logan Kerlee

If you ever saw the SNL skits, land sharks are something to fear. LOL As a scubadvr, I can appreciate that fear of the deep ocean although I don't feel that myself. I actually want to see more sharks. :-)

Soloydiver

Matt Hooper is played by Richard Dreyfus. He previously starred in George Lucas' second film American Graffiti, and afterwards scored a role in Jaws, as George and Steven Spielberg are to this day good friends. Not to make it sound like he only got the role for that reason. He's a great actor. But there is a connection between George and Steven. Incidentally, George's first two films were also co-produced by Francis Ford Coppola, who would go on to do The Godfather Trilogy. George also knew Brian De Palma, director of films like Carrie, Scarface, and The Untouchables. It was always fascinating to me how many major directors all knew each other, and many even went to school together.

Nicholas Sulikowski

omg i haven't seen this in forever wow

alejandro

I know people wont care as much but the guy playing Quint is from my hometown and to see someone from there in Hollywood from a town like that makes me smile

Joel

As a Gen-X kid, Chief Brody and his wife as parents leaving their kid unsupervised is on par. The ashtray beside the mom's bed!

JiminyMac

I'm surprised she hasn't reacted to Independence Day (1996) yet. I always thought of that as the perfect summer movie. It would be very appropriate this week. I think she might have already seen it though and maybe that's why.

David Sumner

I like that the Mayor tries to redeem himself in Jaws 2 by being fully onboard with closing the beaches and warning people until the second shark is killed.

David Sumner

Deep Blue Sea is better because it ends with a rap song by LL Cool J!

David Sumner

He wises up AFTER a bunch of people DIE. At least some of those could have been prevented….so I do not accept this as a adequate defense….

David Bennett

In defense of the mayor, he does wise up and in the second movie he fully backs Chief Brody when another shark shows up and starts attacking people.

David Sumner

I appreciate the recent Spielberg binge. Minority Report, Jurassic Park, now Jaws. Keep going! I'm happy to rewatch nearly his entire filmography.

K.N.

It was probably because both those films had a fair amount of appeal to kids.

Michael Ford III

I'd love to her react to This Is The End.

Chris Henderson

Ah, right. And I can't help but wonder, comparing those two movies to goddamn Jaws, why it was *those films* that prompted the change.

G. T. Blackwell

The theme music for Jaws is pretty iconic, but the funny thing is that it's almost identical to the theme music from the Star Trek episode "The Doomsday Machine", which was produced by Desilu studios (where John Williams worked before he started doing movies)....

Chris Gronau

That and Gremlins.

David Sumner

Great movie. Great reaction. PG-13 didn't exist when this movie came out. My understanding is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom prompted the creation of a rating between PG and R. (I could be wrong, though.)

G. T. Blackwell

... "Candygram"...

Probably shouldn't tell her about the movie that is about land sharks I guess........ Ooops. 3:44 - is exactly the same logic people were telling you about the movie not being that scary. Lol Personally for me, sharks (while starteling for sure) are not the thing that scare me in the ocean. rip tides I think are the scariest thing about being in the ocean. Even in shallow water. Jellyfish are another thing I am wary of as they can just be a bad time if one gets stung. Sure sharks can be scary, but there are far more and probably scarier things in the ocean. Also when this came out PG-13 wasn't a rating option.

DM DC

"Look at their donky poles! You're not gonna catch a Great White with that." Okay, now I feel attacked. 😡

G. T. Blackwell

So yes, Spielberg did capture a shooting star in the shot, and he's added a shooting star into every movie he's made since then (except Schindler's List, I have yet to find a shooting star in that movie). John Williams, well, what can you say. The man started composing music for movies in 1959, and is probably the greatest composer the film industry has and may ever see. He simply knows how to set the tone and the mood for a movie through music. Most of my favorite horror movies, it's never the beast or the alien that's the real villain. Here we had the mayor, in Aliens we had Burke, in A Nightmare on Elm Street you had the mother, in Frankenstein you had the angry mob, Let the Right One In had the bullies, Night of the Living Dead had the father/husband...... you could just go on. The shark is simply being a shark. Greed is what led to the additional deaths..... I love how the mayor tells his friend to go into the water on the 4th of July, while he's walking around in a suit and tie. Mr. Mayor, you want people to go into the water, then you go in and lead by example. Instead just sacrifice others. Typical politician. The thing I love about Spielberg's movies as there's almost always subtle social commentary woven into the script. This was a fun reaction.

Tim D.

The nudity wasn’t sexual, the violence wasn’t people murdering each other, etc. Even Temple of Doom was PG, and that was a lot more gory (hence the creation of PG-13).

Byron

Im also at a loss as to why this didn’t rate an R rating

Ben Wheeler

Loved your reaction Natalie! One of my favorite films....I am one of a minority of people who actually read the novel before I saw the movie. You really hit the nail on the head during the 4th of july scene: mayor larry vaughn IS the real villain for refusing to acknowledge the danger that the shark posed. The shark is just doing shark stuff like normal, there was plentiful food in the water so why shouldn't the shark move one? In the book, hooper had an affair with brody's wife. It is my understanding that Spielberg cut that part out of the film version because it would have slowed it down to much. The oldest male great white is believed to have been 73 years old when he died. I believe the oldest female is pushing 50 and is still alive. Her name is Deep Blue, she's 20 ft long (movie GW was estimated by Quint to be 25) and weighs an estimated 4500 pounds. I saw on the web where they estimate the oldest living greenland shark to be more than 500 years old which would make it the oldest living vertebrae animal in existence. Peter Benchley, the author of the novel, made a cameo as the reporter on the beach on the fourth of july. he later in live became a passionate supporter of efforts to UN-demonize sharks and actually conserve them. The sequels go downhill in quality. 2 is ok enough to watch, the other pair, I wouldn't bother with. Deep Blue Sea is a little far fetched but I think you would still 'enjoy' it..... I suppose you could watch the Meg. Honestly I can't suspend enough disbelief to take a movie like that seriously. The idea that a megalodon could be alive today is just a little too ridiculous for me to, ahem, swallow......

David Bennett

It's a pretty well known fact, but if anyone didn't know: This movie is considered the first "blockbuster".

LookingForOwls

Another interesting fact... Robert Shaw (Quint) and Richard Dreyfuss (Hooper) really didn't get along with each other on set, a lot of people think that this helped the way they were on screen.

Baggie Mark

I am a huge fan of this movie and this one started my interest in sharks. The stories of the making of Jaws is a journey in itself as it almost torpedoed Steven Spielberg's career.

Nick Scholz

Apparentley Spielberg uses shooting stars in some of his films because of an episode during his childhood. One night, when Steven was a boy, his father Arnold unexpectedly ushered him out of bed and put him in the car for what would be a defining journey. It would be the first time Steven witnessed the beauty of space first-hand. It would be the first time he saw a meteor shower up close. It would be the starting point for his interest in space, and his use of shooting stars.

Baggie Mark

bahahha

Natalie Gold

haha I'm pretty pleased that it was able to stay a surprise for so many!

Natalie Gold

you're braver than me! I couldn't get past the "dun duns" the first time haha😂

Natalie Gold

omg really!?

Natalie Gold

Thanks Nat

Curaitis

Hi Nat, you asked if they accidentally caught a shooting star in film.. you'll find a shooting star in most Spielberg films.

Baggie Mark

When Nat mentioned last week during the Mummy Reaction video that movie reminded her of a Summer Blockbuster was the reason why I thought she would pick a classic. Plus, she did say she would be surprised if anyone would guess correctly LOL! Fun Fact: Jaws is considered the first Summer Blockbuster Movie!

Alan Felicia

PG-13 rating didn't exist back then. It was added in response to Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom and Gremlins in 1984. Steven Speilberg suggested MPAA that they need a rating between PG and R.

Navjot Singh

Not a huge fan of this movie because I don’t find it to be exciting or scary but I love the vibes from this movie. Makes me wish I was a part of this world minus the killer shark lol

Jenny Tolls

I thought it was gonna be an old school classic as well but I wouldn’t have guessed this

Jenny Tolls

I really didn't enjoy them, but if Nat decides to watch them ill watch them with her lol....

Baggie Mark

Nattie Shark Doo Doo doo doo doo doo Nattie Shark Doo Doo doo doo doo doo Nattie Shaaaaark!

Mastervodo

This is why I love you Natalie! I've been hoping you'd react to something I really love sometime soon, bc it's been a while for me (sorry). YAY! J A W S P.S. But don't ever watch this movie with me bc I will be saying lines verbatim along with the actors, all the way through. I especially love doing Quinn's speech and making fun of Mayor Vaughn too! lol Edit1 -- There was no PG-13 yet at the time of the release of J A W S (and not indeed until July of 1984). G, PG, R and X was all there was. Not sure HOW this made PG...

MertzRocks

I saw that as a teenager on HBO in like 80, give or take a year. Had me scared shiteless lol.

MertzRocks

The way they executed the USS Indianapolis monolog was so well done. Robert Shaw was great as Quint imo. If anyone is interested in the USS Indianapolis survivors accounts of the sinking and the days after, you can't go wrong with Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. About an hour in length, called Nightmares of Indianapolis. Link below. https://youtu.be/Jqu7mM0kheE

Stephen Lewis

While I do agree that they aren't as good, I wouldn't go so far as to call them unwatchable, except maybe #4 lol.

MertzRocks

One reason the theme works so well is because the Dies Irae, a four note musical personification of death, is front and center. As an aside I recommend the Soundtrack Show, a podcast about movie/tv/video game music

Ben Wheeler

Excellent surprise choice!

Erik Stevenson

sharkweek coming so close with jaws' time of setting is not entirely coincidental i would imagine

Wu Sha Ling

The orignal summer blockbuster nice

Rey

Wow, I would never have guessed Jaws was the mystery movie. A true classic. But please don't watch any of the ther Jaws films 🦈🦈

Baggie Mark

Happy Friday nat I'm disappointed in myself not guessing as I check the national , international , world days weeks every single Day 🤦 still in a bad way though so adding this to the watch when I can list 👍 great surprise though ngl . Hope you have an amazing weekend nat and cheers as always for all the uploads this week

Ian

Also, speaking of early Spielberg, you should check out “Duel” from 1971 which was a TV movie he directed that was eventually released theatrically. If you like Jaws you’re gonna love that. :)

REDR58

LOL! Had a feeling it was gonna be an old school classic that none of us would guess correctly! Great choice, gonna enjoy watching this in its full entirety since I've only watch this movie in bits, mostly the last 30 mins. LOL!

Alan Felicia

Jaws 2 is worth a watch as well, but stop there. :)

REDR58

Happy Friday Feature Nat. Thanks for what is an awesome surprise😊 Continuing the summer movies with the film that really was the first summer blockbuster. "We saw boobies" is now forever going to be the deciding factor on whether a movie is PG or not 😂 I saw this movie for the first time when I was 10. It was the very first time it was shown on tv. I was fine up until the moment where the head came out of the boat, and that was it. I left the room and had nightmares for weeks afterwards. I've watched it tons of times since, and it's probably the most quoted film between myself and my brother. If one of us takes a good photo and sends it over, the usual reply is "Just trying to get yourself into the National Geographic" 😄 I love how Spielberg keeps the camera at water level to keep you on edge. This was the 2nd of the 29 movies that John Williams scored for Spielberg, and it earned him his 2nd of his 5 oscars. The news reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley who wrote the novel. I loved you hating on the mayor Nat, and attacking his fashion sense ha ha, and I loved your joy when Hooper appeared on the surface 😊 Deep Blue Sea is a fun and crazy shark movie to watch too. Thanks again for a great surprise and an amazing reaction today Nat. It was so cool. Thanks for all your hard work this week too. Have a brilliant weekend 💛
