I know you've already finished the series, but I think a big reason for why the knowledge of Harmonic Convergence, and history of Raava and Vaatu wasn't taught is due to Aang being gone for a 100 years. As well, from what we were shown, Avatars don't seem to go too far back for advice, so after a point, Wan was likely just forgotten and Avatars lost the true connection with Raava herself.

Korralin Skye

I also subbed just to see this episode + the season 2 finale. korra is so goated, very excited to see your reaction to the season 3 finale!

Carlos .h

raava doesn't choose the next avatar she just follows wan through his incarnations (SORRY IF IT FEELS LIKE IM MANSPLAINING THIS TO YOU I SWEAR IM NOT)

Carlos .h

The best quote to sum up having fire vs bending.... "The element was given, bending was learned."

MarkyO

I SUBBED JUST FOR THESE EPISODE YES PUMP IT STRAIGHT TO MY VEINS BABY

MarkyO

I'm talking about audience scores damn it which are some of the highest of not only the seaosn but the entire show. I was very much alive when these episodes aired originally and there were nothing but praise for them and that continues to this day. You are truly in the vast minority of people that didn't love these 2 episodes lol

Danishprince

these were definitely my favorite episodes so far. wan and korra are so similar <3 love them and the story of how the avatar came to be

Ariana Mitchell

and this whole season is also most disliked by the fans so it being the best of the season doesnt mean anything. the whole season is the worst content avatar has to offer. and its still fun to watch cause the world is great, but writing wise its poor in comparison to everything else

Banana Hammocks

telling me to look at critics ratings after everything i said is a little wild. i referenced audience scores and reviews, if youre disconnected enough from media to not understand critic scores being high means nothing then more power to you, ignorance is bliss!

Banana Hammocks

Just check the ratings dude.. The amount of people that disliked the episodes then and even now are in the vast minority. These two episodes has always been widely regarded as some of the best

Danishprince

Rude and unnecessary. Easy to spot what you’ve learned and what you haven’t about social interactions.

Taylor Craft

I just looked at the IMDB ratings, and these are literally the highest rated episodes of the season, and it's not even close.

LookingForOwls

I suggest anyone that responded to my original comment look on YouTube and Google for reviews of these two episodes and there are plenty of people that extremely dislike them. If you like them more power to you but not everyone does. You guys got me to question myself like woah did I actually get this wrong but no, with minuscule searching I have found as much criticism as praise if not more criticism. Watch hello future me’s video to understand how I feel, somewhere in the middle!

Banana Hammocks

Were any of you alive and watching the show when it came out. These episodes were POLARIZING when they came out, people were pissed. Those people wouldn’t have reason to continue to consume korra content because they don’t enjoy it and wouldn’t be here now. Me specifically I enjoy the conversation even if it’s not my favorite show. If you look up “the beginnings korra” the 2 most popular videos on them are critiques. I said in my original comment that there are people that love these two episodes but no, when it came out these two episodes and this season as a whole were the reason people turned on the show and what most fans of atla and not korra cite as the reason they stopped watching.

Banana Hammocks

That's bananas. These 2 episodes are perhaps the best IMO, getting to know the origin story.

FatLittleButterfly

What?! It was literally confirmed in ATLA that they used to bend energy instead of elements, and the lion turtles did that. Then Aang used that energy bending knowledge to take away someone's bending. It was never said that their bending was granted by these animals. They said they LEARNT bending from studying how the moon push and pull tides, how dragons teaches the dragon dance, etc.

FatLittleButterfly

I really liked the story of Avatar Wan and getting the backstory to how the era of Avatar began. At some point in time, the avatars must have stopped worrying about the spirit world since it was closed off anyways and they wouldn't have thought of talking to each and single one that came before. If they all lived an average of 150 years, there would be at least 60 of them by the time Korra became the Avatar. Even the recent water-bending avatar was a carefree one because the world was at peace. I don't think he even considered finding out anything about the Avatar's history

FatLittleButterfly

@darchangel - Badgermoles, Dragons etc. never gave humans the ability to use the elements but taught humans how to bend them. Those are two different things as these two episodes so effectively shows. Humans from Wans city can use the fire but no one uses it other than to just shoot fire blasts as spirits. We see Wan slowly getting better and even see him training with a dragon. The hunt leader even says that Wan is using fire in a way he's never seen, that it's an extension of him. There's nothing in this episode that ignores established backstory, it just expands upon what we already knew.

Danishprince

Aang tended to wear his insecurities on his sleeve, whereas Korra, while emotional, tends to bury hers (like S1E4, where she's terrified of Amon) until they burst out--something I honestly, and unfortunately, relate a lot to. Also, 10,000 years is a huge amount of time, how much do we actually know about exactly what happened in the fertile crescent? The Avatars don't really know a ton about what happened--their past lives are guides, not teachers. And the thought of 12 year old Korra listening in spirit class is hilarious regardless.

Geoffrey of Monmouth

Episodes 7 and 8 marks the return of Studio Mir, which animated season 1 and will go on to animate seasons 3 and 4. The other studio, Pierrot, will animate episode 9 and then the rest of the season is animated by Studio Mir. While there are strong similarities between the two studios, I do feel that Mir is the better, more dynamic studio.

Robert Bonfante

Part of it is the fact that the original animation studio of Korra, Studio Mir, returns on these two episodes. They basically came back to save the season.

Robert Bonfante

Honestly, you're the only person I've ever heard or read say that. I think universally everybody I know loves episodes 7 and 8.

Robert Bonfante

This episode shows a dragon teaching Wan how to firebend via the dragon dance. The established lore was never that those animals gave humans the ability to bend, but just that they taught them how to effectively do it.

LookingForOwls

I like that Raava says “we’ll be together for all YOUR lifetimes”, which implies it’s not up to her, that reincarnation is a thing that exists outside of her and she doesn’t “choose” a new body so to speak, just goes where his spirit goes because she’s his friend😭 it’s kinda cute

Daniel McGuinness

Maybe you could convey your opinions in a less rude way? So what if she didn't comment on the art style, it looks old because old memory isn't exactly groundbreaking commentary.

Slick447

These are far and away my favorite episodes of season two. They clearly knew they had something even more spectacular than usual when they wrote the script and man did the rest of the creatives behind the show deliver. I love the contrast they give the human environments to the natural world, the lighting, shot composition and score are all at the tippy top of the game here. If you had asked me before I'd seen it if I'd ever want an explanation for the 1st avatar I would have said a hard no, they will definitely mess it up, after seeing the two parter though I'm so so thankful they did and executed on that stories potential so well.

Zachary Newkirk

Thank you 🎉☺️

Daniel McGuinness

lol yes and no. only because of 1 character tho

GodKingSosa

No comment about the art style? It's literally old-timey looking because it's millennia old memories. It's interesting how much you notice shot composition and lighting and editing choices in live action but animation often gets at most a "neat". Easy to spot what you've learned, and what you haven't. Previous episode, but you literally did it with the in-universe propaganda movie shoot lmao

Shen V

I agree that these are my least favorite episodes of this series, mostly due to the fact that they ignore previously established backstory for how bending was learned (badger-moles, dragons, air bison, moon and ocean). I appreciate being given the origin of the Avatar, but I feel it was executed poorly for the sake of the story they wanted to tell for the main conflict of this season.

Darchangel

and other fantasies you came up with on the spot while on the toilet

Shen V

if u didnt i was

GodKingSosa

I personally think these are two of the BEST episodes of the series. I've never heard of the consensus being that these eps are bad.

K.N.

Adding on, we all know young Korra would have paid little to no attention in a Spirits 101 class.

K

HE WAS NUMBER WAN! sorry had to lol.

Jam

Most of the avatars don’t go very far back into their past lives. Aang mostly talked to Roku, occasionally Kyoshi, and a little to Kuruk and Yangchen. Korra barely talks to Aang at all even because she’s not the most spiritual of avatars. The Avatar has to learn, just the same as all the avatars before them, and history fades.

K

importantly, harmonic convergence only happens once in 10 000 years so as important as it is, a lot of this is probably just forgotten history. she had to connect to the first avatar ever to learn about it. I'm not sure if you can just do that without knowing you have to, and I wouldnt know of anyone other than the avatar who knows of Raava and Vaatu. So it's pretty reasonable that nobody told her.

Mathies

So much greatness in these episodes. Learning the origins of the Avatar was incredible! The Avatar - Human and Spirit fused together through cosmic energy <3 Even knowing that the Avatar cycle is the way it is because that were the order in which Wan learned the elements

Danishprince

SOLELY CONJECTURE but it could have even been by design that later avatars did NOT know this sequence of events to remove the temptation to undo or meddle with the choice Wan had made

Michael Doyle

people can argue over authors and creators choices but i think its important to respect what they consider cannon its their world after all

Michael Doyle

i personally love this lore and all the lore of the avatar world confirmed by the creators i respect them as individuals who havw made a gorgeously expansive world and ive grown fond of all their additions in comics novels shows i just see it as if the CREATORs of these concepts say this is how it went down then this is how it went down

Michael Doyle

I think you can forgive the Avatars for not knowing history that happened 10,000 years ago. IRL humans only have history of any kind going back ~7-8 thousand years.

LookingForOwls

I think you're pretty alone in that opinion. Easily the best episodes of the season, some of the best of the series.

LookingForOwls

I really wish you wouldn't speak for the community, because in reality, these are widely considered to be the best episodes of season 2.

Evan

i think tbe fact that it has been 10,000 years has a lil something to do with how little info aang and korra and even roku and kyoshi had in regards to the history of their existence as the entity "The Avatar" like by then i feel like it was simply a peace keeper and balance maintaining positon swapped ceremoniously between the 4 nations

Michael Doyle

Lol no they're not. They're some of the highest rated episodes of the entire show and even beats the ratings of some of the best episodes in ATLA. Beginnings part 1 and 2 are considered some of the best episodes Korra has to offer

Danishprince

these are widely considered the 2 worst episodes of the show. some people really love it but im pretty sure the general consensus is dislike for the lore drop of the first avatar. im curious what you think of it by the end of the season!

Banana Hammocks

Happy Birthday! 🥳🎈

Darryl Low

Everytime you post a new "LOK S2" reaction my dyslexic ass keeps thinking its "Loki". Then I get excited for season 2 loki only to remember it doesn't come out for another couple months. Still excited about LOK though. Just waiting til all the reaction episodes are out to watch.

Elizabeth Hatfield

Best birthday gift ever 😁

Daniel McGuinness

Happy Tuesday nat just when I thought I was catching up wham two more episodes ahhhhh 😃 curious to see what's in the poll tomorrow and Thursday and Friday are going to be great cheers nat

Ian

So excited to hear your thoughtsa on these episodes! Imo they're some of the best of any Korra episodes and matches ATLA in quality and scope <3

Danishprince

Happy August and Happy Twosday Nat 😊 Looking forward to today's double bill. Wow, what an epic story. And the score was incredible. Spirits 101 😂 Everything you wanted to know about the spirit world, but were afraid to ask. It's all going to kick off when Korra gets back. Can't wait. Thanks for an awesome extended video today Nat 💛

Darryl Low

You should watch Voltron on Netflix at some point. It's made by the Avatar/Korra team but it's new characters and it's in space.
