But the thing is, Korra wasn't a natural at the Spirit bending thing. Like, Natalie missed it, it seems, but that was the first time she successfully did it. The other times she had no clue how to actually do it. Attempting it time and time again is meant to be a sign of progression, it didn't just come to her. Thats one of the things I think people miss. She had a solid progression on her spiritual learning.

Lorenzo Baxter

That works. He's obsession with the Spirit World comes across to me as an environmentalist that's lost his moral compass (a la Thanos), but I can also see the theocrat.

Robert Bonfante

I do think Unalaq fits in nicely politically, if not necessarily thematically. If Amon is a demagogue (verging on Communistic regimes), Unalaq is a theocrat

Geoffrey of Monmouth

I do enjoy seeing all the characters go in different directions like Bolin is actually growing as a person instead of being around his brother all the time living his own life, Asami is trying to fill her dads shoes after what he did. Mako trying to be more responsible by being a cop and Korra with her family stuff and trying to be the Avatar. idk it is the weakest season of the show but I don't hate it there is good stuff to be found. Like Tenzen too and his siblings it sucks that he's Anags only airbending son and he can't do the shit that Korra and his daughter are doing

Narutoanime16

I'm a sucker for lore so season 2 has so many good points for me, but everything you said overshadows it all so much which is disappointing

I consider season 2 the weakest largely because Unaloq does kind of falls short as a villain. Legend of Korra, taken as a whole, has awesome villains. And part of what makes them great is that most of the villains feel relevant -- as in you could probably find real world examples of these villains. For example, Amon is the populist demagogue of the bunch. He uses whatever feelings of resentment non-benders might feel and then exploits those feelings. Unaloq is the exception to this -- he comes across as a typical villain that makes a deal with a greater power so he himself can become powerful, which is a very common trope in fantasy stories. He's the least compelling villain and it does bring the season down. Which is a shame because this season explores some very interesting ideas with regards to the spirits and the spirit world. I used to think it was the romantic subplots that bothered me, but honestly, upon this rewatch, I'm not as annoyed by that. Having seen the last two seasons, I think season 2 sets things up nicely for what is to come in terms of romance and friendships. I do think that Nickelodeon did do the show dirty. The show's creators were only guaranteed the first season, so season 1 was meant as a self-contained story. With season 2, they were still only assured one season. Only with season 3 and 4 did we get a story that ties the two together. Someone made an excellent video on Korra and one great point he made was that the Legend of Korra came out after the terrible live action The Last Airbender movie. That movie kind of ruined whatever goodwill the original ATLA had. Had that movie not been made and LOK came out right after ATLA, would they have had the benefit of a guaranteed 3 or 4 season run where they could have written a long story arc just like ATLA? I think so. Overall, season 2 isn't bad. I do enjoy this season. I loved meeting Bumi and Kya. I love Jinora's development this season. I like the continued development of Bolin, Mako and Asami. And Varrick is an interesting comic relief character/mini-villain who is annoying now but gets better as the show progresses. Season 2 just falls a little short compared to the other 3 seasons.

Robert Bonfante

I feel like season 2 is more story, less action. Which can be a nice change of pace, but you can feel the absence of insane fight scenes like with Tarrlok and Amon. Honestly to me it feels like sometimes Korra gets nothing BUT struggle 😅 my girl goes THROUGH it so severely every season 😭 Still some big moments left in season 2, interested to see how it goes over 👀

Daniel McGuinness

I honestly think that both opinions are valid. One can find ATLA better and someone else can find Korra better and that is fine too. It's honestly comes down to what people get out of each show. Me personally, I loved the worldbuilding of ATLA but I dig the darker themes of Korra. I like Korra better. But I recognize ATLA's greatness.

Robert Bonfante

If Korra had to re-learn the elements, then it would’ve been too similar to ATLA

Alvin Everett

You haven’t even met the 2 best villains of the show. And Varrick is the funniest character in the entire show

Alvin Everett

I don't know if you can really call Verick a villain... he's a bad guy, sure, but he's more like a comic relief bad guy.

Kevin Bartelen

"As good" doesn't mean "not good", it just means ATLA set an insanely high bar that some people think Korra couldn't clear, and there's no reason thats an invalid opinion just because you personally really like or even prefer Korra, whether thats because you personally connect to her story or find it more adult or whatever. ATLA is a unicorn of a show and it's not an insult to say that it's hard to live in its shadow. And I totally agree, the writing on Korra isn't as good, even when the show is really good.

John Cedar

Every time I read LOK my mind switches it to Loki.

SilentBobFather

I stg every time someone harps on LoK not being "as good as ATLA," I just point at the season 3-4 arc and be like "THIS. THIS IS GOOD. STOP IGNORING IT."

Adam Lee

Yeah, I feel like people forget how fast Aang learned the elements once he actually started with them.

Asha Hayes

Yea but then again its just like any other tv show like Daredevil S1 and 2 are very different and don't acknowledg much from S1 except Fisk being in prison

Narutoanime16

I didn't want to say until the end of the season so as to not cause any bias, but I'm definitely excited for you to get to season 3, ever since you started the show. It's an insane story imo. Loving watching you watch this show overall too!

Darchangel

I also hate Nickelodeon for holding back the writers so much. Especially in the season 4 final (If you know what I mean, you know. I don't want to spoil).

Lara

I can't wait for you to get to season 3 and 4 especially the end of season 3 and beginning of season 4 because that's when Korra gets her big struggle moment and grows a lot as a character (At least for me that was the moment I really started to like her)

Lara

Seems the general consensus is Unaloq is the weakest villain of all Korra. Amon and the other upcoming villains the next couple seasons after are very strong, representing interesting themes. And Korra will progressively be met with challenges causing internal strife. This season has some interesting bits, definitely more to look forward to. Glad you are giving this a fair chance.

Dan

I can understand the annoyance that everything comes natural to Korra, but at the same time I feel like that's the point. Once Aang got over his initial hurdles when learning, he was also a natural. Katara was even upset that Waterbending came so naturally to Aang, he also picked up on firebending but due to the experience he swore off on even attempting until Zuko joined them, and Earthbending got it's own episode since it was hardest for him but after that he didn't have much issue.

Dayvon Rose

Season 2 is arguably the most lore heavy season. It, narratively, is probably the most puzzling or at least fragile (when against some scrutiny) but the consequences of this season inform the entire show. The final conflict of this season is epic and starts a throughline of character growth for Korra that's at the center of all three seasons. So yeah, definitely a little clunky but purposeful. Loving these videos!!

Isaiah Frisbie

For why the pacing feels off, it's an animation issue. Studio Mir was forced off the show for season 2, then returned to take episodes 7 and 8 (Beginnings 1 and 2), then left again for this episode, and then returned for episode 10 and animated the rest of the show. So I think it's mostly the whiplash from energetic and flowing animation (and all the things that allows), suddenly back to slow filler anime-style animation that causes it. Season 3 and 4 were both written together, so they get more of an overarching narrative, and it also allows them to wrap a bunch of S1 and S2 back into it. Korra's arc in the final 2 seasons is IMO the best thing to come out of the ATLA universe.

Geoffrey of Monmouth

This is where the flaws of Book 2 and the hamstringing of the writers start to really show themselves unfortunately, but Book 3 leading into 4 jumps back on the rails nicely in terms of a compelling antagonist and a better pacing to the storytelling. There's still so much for Korra to go through on her journey that lends itself to the full development of her character, along with other characters you definitely aren't expecting.

Bobby Kraus

Normal people: Who gets excited for Monday morning? Me: Oh boy, Monday morning! Time for more Korra.

Geoffrey of Monmouth

"i KNEW this would happen" Tenzin is the actual GOAT

Ian

Happy Monday nat hope your weekend was fantastic and you are doing well I was out almost all weekend so didn't get to even start season 2 yet so won't be watching today but I will eventually ofc 🥳

Ian

Hey Nat. Happy Monday. Hope you had an awesome weekend too. Looking forward to watching Korra and Ted, and Spidey later in the week 😊 I enjoyed today's episode a lot. A lot of goofy moments for sure, but there's plenty of those throughout the series 😄 The music was amazing as always. I liked the contrast of Unalaq using brute force to try and enter the portal against Korra's more serene approach to enter the spirit world. Thanks for a great reaction today Nat 💛
