Never trust Wan Shi Tong, He Who Knows 10.000 Things - He mad spooky! Also the reason why Unalaq could use his bending is because he entered through the portal and thus still had his physical body whereas Korra and Jinora (and Aang back then) only entered with their spirit form. No body no bending :)

2023-08-10 14:01:17 +0000 UTCWe hardly saw the spirit world in ATLA so the critiques you have is just not liking the way they did it. We only actually saw two locations of the spirit world in ATLA. They simply mapped it out more with more locations, so there isn't much to dishonor.

2023-08-10 06:21:26 +0000 UTCHence the "somewhere in there" part of my comment. His goal now is aligned with Vaatu, but it's clear it didn't start from that point. And Wan Shi Tong clearly hasn't been corrupted and still thinks of him as a friend. My point is that Unalaq's basic point of "human beings mistreat spirits" might be something that's true.

2023-08-10 00:12:22 +0000 UTCTo be fair to Greg Baldwin he DID voice Iroh in ATLA in a little of season 2 and all of season 3. He just didn't speak a whole lot in season 3 and most of season 2 was still Mako voicing Iroh.

2023-08-09 20:46:34 +0000 UTCwhen they make a spirit that has the goal of "10,000 years of darkness" and his ambition, goals, and reasoning stop at that, it's kind of hard to take any kind of implied moral nuance seriously. i'm having a hard time understanding why any spirit is supposed to favor vatu, they literally get corrupted from being in his presence and start acting like a hive mind murdering drone. that's hardly a willing follower.

2023-08-09 18:17:29 +0000 UTCI agree, to an extent. Each season seems to deal with a sort of extremism imo. *Semi-Spoilers* To me it seems like season 1 is left wing extremism, 2 is right wing, 3 philosophical zealotry, 4 military. I get your point though as the right tends to lean into the spiritual stuff more.

2023-08-09 09:14:07 +0000 UTC(BIG, THIS IS MY OPINION ON THIS COMMENT) I won’t lie, I hate this episode. It just feels like everything is floofy and very poorly written compared to the spirit world in ATLA. Even Iroh feels like a complete different person. The spirits suck, the whole Korra turning into a kid sucks, the spirit world suck. ATLA actually tried to make the spirits mystical and mysterious as they act on their own rule very different than ours. The only part I thought was cool/semi consistent was the Owl Wan Shi Tong betraying Jinora. Everything just seems to always be too easy for Korra and I hate the “with the power of friendship you are now good spirits.” I will say another good part is Tanzin at the end but overall they just flop on the spirit world. Maybe it’s cause the spirits don’t look as cool to me as ATLA but I also just always hated the “spirits turning evil now they are purple.” It doesn’t at all feel like what ATLA was going for with the panda Hei Bai. Not to mention that the spirit world in ATLA itself felt more like a mirror of the real world but with pocket dimensions while this feels as if it’s not connected at all and for some reason humans have all the control over the environments. It always felt like Aang was wildly out of control in the spirit world and that he was forced on the whims of the spirits around him to not just pop him like a pimple, being forced to follow THEIR rules etc. non of this “I’m angry now the spirits turn purple, oh no.” Idk, I just always feel passionate about the episodes with the spirit world because it felt so unique in ATLA and to me these episodes kind of ruin the awe I had for the show and it’s world building. It just feels like they wanted to make their own spirits and their own spirit world but posted Avatar on it and worse animation.

2023-08-09 03:41:25 +0000 UTCI beg to differ. Unalaq doesn't so much strike me as a politician but rather as a zealot. Amon, now that's more of a politician. Unalaq believes his own bs, whereas Amon created a fictional identity to fool people into thinking he's something he's not.

2023-08-09 03:26:50 +0000 UTCI know the avatar reincarnates, but I’ve wondered if reincarnation is their afterlife. The way Raava says “I’ll be with you through all your lifetimes” could suggest that people reincarnate.

2023-08-09 02:42:03 +0000 UTCAs evil as Unalaq seems from our perspective, he has genuinely earned the respect of a lot of spirits, as Wan Shi Tong says; just like Amon was a villain but had a point somewhere in there, it's worth acknowledging that Unalaq might as well--humans do mistreat the spirits very often

2023-08-09 01:21:40 +0000 UTCNattt r u going to watch across the spiderverse?
??
2023-08-09 00:23:09 +0000 UTCThere isn't an afterlife that we know of in the Avatar universe.

2023-08-08 23:52:47 +0000 UTCIroh said “My beloved Lu Ten, I will see you again.” during a dream sequence, while sitting at the tree near Ba Sing Se, in his fire nation armor. I interpret it as the memory of Iroh reaching the decision to journey to the spirit world in search for Lu Ten. I don’t think we know if he ever found him, but there’s reason to believe that there is no “afterlife” in the Avatar universe, and everyone reincarnates. The Avatar maintains a connection to the spirit world through Raava, so their past lives can reappear to guide the new Avatar. My guess would be Iroh chose to stay in the spirit world so he would be available if someone wanted to see him, the way he’d wanted to see Lu Ten.

2023-08-08 20:10:00 +0000 UTCGlad I'm not the only one that thought about psychedelic trips when Iroh was talking lol

2023-08-08 19:33:02 +0000 UTCThe only thing odd to me about Iroh being in the Spirit World is he chose to not be with his son in the afterlife (like he promised in S2E9), but it also does fit his character. It's conflicting to me, but nevertheless it was awesome to see Iroh again!

2023-08-08 17:46:57 +0000 UTCCan't wait until we're ACTUALLY watching Loki, so that I don't keep misreading the titles.

2023-08-08 17:29:26 +0000 UTCI love the metaphors in ATLA and Korra so much! The lessons they teach are wonderful. What is Unalaq? A politician. What do politicians do? Manipulate the spirits of people to achieve their goals for good or bad. How can you tell Unalaq is bad? He uses fear/anger/hate to manipulate.... etc etc. *chuckles

2023-08-08 17:09:54 +0000 UTCcorrect and not a spoiler
GodKingSosa
2023-08-08 17:08:31 +0000 UTCI don’t remember if this is a spoiler or not, so forgive me if it is, but the reason Unalaq could bend while Korra couldn’t is that he went into the spirit world physically, with his physical body, through the open portal. Korra and Jinora meditated in, same as Aang always did.
